Q: What do the initials of "OBAFGKM" mean?
Q: How old is the Moon?
Q: What is the life cycle of a star and how old can one get to be?
Q: What are the different types of EMR and what are they used for?
Q: The farther away from a sun that you get, would there not be vast reaches of space that would never receive even one ray of light from a sun?
Q: At what distance, position and angle are we from the galactic plane?
Q: My understanding is that cosmic rays are made of protons and atomic nuclei which collide and form other particles, giving off some photons in the process, and that photon does not slow down to become anything else (the decrease in the frequency of a photon is not the same as the decrease in speed) and its existence as far as is now known is independent of other bosons and leptons. Can you confirm either notion?
Q: Could you explain what nucleosynthesis is?

Collection Development
Space Physics and Astronomy Debra K. Bailey debrae@rice.edu [General policy] Current Collection Policy:
Space physics and astronomy is a relatively new field, and researchers rely on the physics collection as well as materials specific to the field of space science. The early physics collection is very strong, dating back to the earliest days of Rice Institute. The physics collection is strong in publications from scholarly societies and emphasizes nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics, atomic and molecular physics, quantum electronics, biophysics, condensed matter physics, surface physics, and theoretical physics. The space physics collection emphasizes ground and space-based observational astronomy, theoretical astrophysics and space plasma physics, Earth system science, spacecraft development and data analysis. The scope of the collection is broad, and some undergraduate materials are purchased to support the curriculum. However, this material is fairly limited. Materials are purchased in all formats. There is an increasing amount of information published electronically, and new electronic journals and compact disks are being added at a rapid rate. All languages are purchased, with an emphasis on English language materials. However, materials published in German and French are also routinely acquired. Materials are acquired from a wide variety of publishers, with an emphasis on major scientific publishers such as Springer-Verlag, Wiley, and others. There are a significant number of monographic series on standing order, particularly from scholarly societies such as the Astronomical Society of the Pacific and the International Astronomical Union. Recent materials are emphasized, but retrospective materials are purchased when requested or to replace missing materials.

The Committee on Radio Frequency Requirements for Scientific Research 1961-1974 The Committee on Radio Frequency Requirements for Scientific Research (CORF) was established in spring 1961 as the US counterpart to the Inter-Union Committee on Frequency Allocations for Radio Astronomy and Space Science (IUCAF). CORF, the original name of which was the Committee on Radio Frequency Allocations for Scientific Research (changed 17 October 1962), was charged with two main responsibilities: 1) To consider and determine the needs of US science for radio frequency allocations and assignments and to work actively with the US government in securing them; and 2) To work with IUCAF. A permanent Subcommittee on Radio Astronomy was established under CORF in November 1961. Membership in CORF included representatives of the US National Committees for the International Astronomical Union and the International Scientific Radio Union, as well as the NAS Space Science Board, under whose administrative responsibilities CORF originally was placed (CORF became an independent committee under the NRC Division of Physical Sciences in November 1962), and federal government agencies concerned with radio frequency allocation and assignment.

What exactly is astronomy?
Astronomy is a physical science concerned with the smallest particles and the largest natural objects. The name Astronomy comes from the Greek roots Astr- and –nomia to literally mean “name stars”. Astronomy is the study of everything outside of the earth’s atmosphere and their chemical and physical properties.
What’s the difference between astronomy and astrology?
Astronomy is a science that studies everything outside of the earth’s atmosphere, such as planets, stars, asteroids, galaxies; and the properties and relationships of those celestial bodies. Astronomers base their studies on research and observation. Astrology on the other hand, is the belief that the positioning of the stars and planets affect the way events occur on earth. If you’re interested in the solar system and the planets, other celestial objects like asteroids and comets, other galaxies and the rest of the universe, what makes up space, and the possibility of alien life or space travel, Astronomy is the field you’re considering.
