As of 2002 Dec 27 This list is offered as a reference for translating commonly appearing acronyms in the space-related newsgroups. If I forgot or botched your favorite acronym, please let me know! Also, if there's an acronym not on this list that confuses you, drop me a line, and if I can figure it out, I'll add it to the list. The canonical version of this list is the HTML form, available at http://tla.surly.org/ . From that, I generate the text form for USENET posting. Note that this is intended to be a reference for frequently seen acronyms, and is most emphatically not encyclopedic. If I incorporated every acronym I ever saw, I'd soon run out of disk space. :-) The list will be posted at regular intervals, every 30 days. All comments regarding it are welcome; I'm reachable at

Even the occasional backyard skywatching by unaided eye or a small telescope can be a marvelous experience. There are innumerable web sites already devoted to general astronomy and so we start below with just a guide to some introductory sites and a few of the major astronomy link lists. We will focus here more on sites related to astronomy projects where amateurs can make significant contributions. One of the most wonderful aspects of astronomy is that amateurs still make significant contributions.

How we can See the Stars The supreme task of the physicist is to arrive at those universal elementary laws from which
the cosmos can be built up by pure deduction. ( Albert Einstein Any two particles in the universe attract each other through the gravitational interaction. ... It can no longer be maintained that the properties of any one thing in the universe are independent of the existence or non-existence of everything else. It is, at last, no longer sensible to speak of a universe with only one thing in it. ( Lee Smolin The sage as astronomer. As long as you still feel the stars as being something 'over you' you still lack the eye of the man of knowledge.
What gave these men the right to be considered philosophers, unlike the other astronomers , geographers and doctors who were active especially in the latter half of the period, was their common assumption that the world possessed some kind of integral unity and determinability which could be understood and explained in rational terms. A more important debt to myth appears in the central presupposition that the world is coherent and intelligible, is somehow a unity in spite of the diversity of its appearance.

    Funding UK astronomy
The taxpayer funds professional astronomers in the UK. Most astronomical research in Britain is done in universities, either by teaching staff or by students undertaking research for their doctorates or by people on postgraduate fellowships. Outside the universities there are two facilities that employ astronomers, the Astronomy Technology Centre (UKATC) in Edinburgh and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Both these organisations provide services and facilities such as instruments for telescopes and space missions, that can be used by the whole astronomy community. The only major observing facility in the UK is the Jodrell Bank radio telescope and the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometry Network (MERLIN), which includes six telescopes ranged across the UK. This is run from Manchester University. The resolution of the array can be improved by including further telescopes across Europe and as far away as China to form the Very Long Base-line Interferometer (VLBI) network. Astronomy has always had a very strong international flavour not least because of the poor weather in the UK. On Hawaii the UK operates a specialist infrared telescope (UKIRT) and shares the operation of the millimetre wavelength James Clerk Maxwell Telescope with the Netherlands and Canada. The UK also has a 25% share in two major 8m telescopes; Gemini North, now complete and sited on Hawaii and Gemini South, sited in Chile.

Space Science Section - Quantum Gravity
Gamma ray bursts those terrific and mysterious flashes of high-energy light now considered to be probes to the farthest reaches of the Universe and earliest moments of time may have yet another secret to reveal: quantum gravity. Not yet observed in nature, quantum gravity is the long-sought missing link between Einstein's General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics, the two incongruous pillars of modern physics. NASA's Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST), planned for a 2005 launch, may be able to detect for the first time the effects of quantum gravity in the speed of gamma-ray burst photons, according to two NASA scientists. The gist of this is that the gamma-ray bursts that GLAST detects will be powerful enough and distant enough to see the highest of the high-energy photons traveling slightly more slowly than lower-energy photons, weighed down by the effect of quantum gravity. Drs. Jay Norris and Jerry Bonnell of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center did the math. The two observational astronomers said that only time will tell if GLAST will see this lag time, for the quantum gravity theory (and the numbers that go along with it) are still rather speculative.
