October 12, 2004 CORN AND SOYBEAN CROPS ARE HUGE At 3.107 billion bushels, the 2004 U.S. soybean crop forecast is 271 million larger than the September forecast, 653 million larger than the 2003 crop, and 216 million larger than the record crop of 2001. The forecast of harvested acreage, at 73.99 million, is 335,000 larger than the previous forecast and 1.015 million above the previous record of 2001. The U.S. average yield is now forecast at 42 bushels per acre, 3.5 bushels above the September forecast, 8.1 bushels above the 2003 average, and 0.6 bushels above the previous record established in 1994. Again, only Oklahoma has a lower forecast yield than reported in September.

Growing Organic Soybeans on CRP Land

Determining Your Market
One of the first issues to address is your market. The majority of organic soybeans are going to Japan for use in the “tofu” market, although organic soybeans are also used for tofu and other soy products in the U.S. Edible soybeans are clear-hilum beans (no black mark on the seed). In the IDALS booklet, you will find a list of buyers for organic grains. Check with them first to determine the market prices you can contract with them for the 1998 growing season [contracts based on acreage (regardless of yields) vs. bushels are best; you don’t always know what you’re going to get your first years]. Organic production generally increases as the farm progresses to a more organic situation (improved soil health and balanced insect populations). Average organic soybean yields this year ranged from 25 bu/A to 53 bu/A on the best farms. Prices received in 1999 ranged from $20/bu to $12/bu (see variety selection below) for certified organic beans. Certified Organic             In order to sell your crop as certified organic, you must be certified by one of the certifying agencies listed on the Organic Information Fact Sheet. Each certifying agency has its own rules, but in general, they will require the following:

WWW The Soy Daily™ University of Illinois Weekly Outlook: Corn, Soybean Crops Market URBANA - June 20, 2005 - As corn and soybean prices move higher, it is useful to try to estimate the U.S. crop size that is reflected by current prices, said a University of Illinois Extension marketing specialist. "Obviously, a precise estimate cannot be made because other factors are influencing price," said Darrel Good. "In addition, the relationship between the crop size, consumption, and price varies over time. Still, the prospective crop size is a useful question to pursue." Good's comments came as he discussed recent developments in the corn and soybean markets, where prices continue to move higher in anticipation of yield reductions due to adverse weather conditions in the United States. "Soybean prices are also being supported by indications that acreage in the United States fell short of March intentions, by crop concerns in China and India, and by a rapid rate of consumption of the 2004 crop," he noted. "Corn price strength has been much more modest than the increase in soybean prices due to large current stocks and indications that U.S. acreage exceeded March intentions."

Sentinel plots stand guard over nation's soybean crops
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - America's first line of defense against a pathological killer carries no weapons, handcuffs or pepper spray. It relies solely on dark green leaves. The pathological threat is Asian soybean rust, a foliar disease that has been known to destroy as much as 80 percent of a soybean field's yield potential. The agricultural crime-fighters are hundreds of tiny soybean fields known as sentinel plots. Sentinels have been planted throughout Indiana and in other farm states, said Greg Shaner, Purdue University Extension plant pathologist. The plots serve as detection sensors for rust infection so that farmers can be alerted in time to protect their crops with fungicide, he said. "Sentinel plots are intended to be an early warning system," said Shaner, who is supervising the Indiana sentinel plot program. "They are small plots - roughly 50-by-50 feet - that are planted throughout the country in soybean-producing states. We try to get these in the ground a little bit ahead of the normal crop. "The plots are monitored closely on a weekly basis for the first appearance of rust. Once we know that rust is within a couple hundred miles of where we have sentinel plots, we'll switch to a twice-weekly monitoring."

Minding the storage: Make plans now for big crop harvest
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Farmers are a few months away from harvesting what could be record corn and above-average soybean crops. They might need every day between now and then to figure out where to put all that grain. Producers should start thinking about their storage options, either on-farm or at a nearby elevator, said Chris Hurt, a Purdue University agricultural economist. Hurt estimates average Indiana corn yields could equal or slightly surpass the 2001 state record of 156 bushels per acre. He projects average state soybean yields of 46 bushels per acre - just 3 bushels lower than the 2001 record. Hurt's predictions are based on recent crop progress reports issued by the Purdue-based Indiana Agricultural Statistics Service (IASS). In its July 26 crop update, the IASS rated 77 percent of the Hoosier corn crop in good to excellent condition, with 94 percent of corn acreage having silked - 18 percent ahead of the five-year average. The IASS rated 72 percent of Indiana soybean crops in good to excellent shape - 21 percent better than one year ago. Bumper crops and storage challenges would be a welcome change for farmers who've experienced less than outstanding corn and soybean yields the past few years. Recent average to below-average harvests in many Corn Belt states, coupled with rising grain demands, have depleted the nation's grain stocks.
