  • locate yourself in your own moment of cultural and intellectual history; and
  • think critically about the books you read, the arguments you confront and the evidence offered for and against theories in the humanities, the social sciences and the natural sciences.

  • alternative cultural traditions and
  • applications of science and technology,
  • works of literature, philosophy and art, and
  • contemporary social issues of urgency and importance. In addition, all students must satisfy writing and diversity requirements to complete the USC core. The freshman year semester of the writing requirement is co-registered with classes in the Social Issues category and a speaker series, helping to build intellectual community among students and faculty in the general education program.

    Ancient Asia The Veda, as discussed in the chapter on Genetic evidence was the racial group of humans with similar ancestry to Cro Magnon man, that dominated the planet from possibly as early as 70,000 years ago, up until 11,600 years ago, the time of the great flood. The demise of this Indian Ocean maritime culture occured at the same time as the demise of Cro Magnon man, who dominated a pan Atlantic culture, known to many as Atlantis. The Veda were also known as the Anu and in Hebrew texts from which the old testament was wriiten, Lord Anu was the culture bringer to the Sumerians, this occurred 10,000 years ago. In other words, Lord Anu must have been survivors of the great Veda civilization of India. It seems that they decided to resurrect their civilization amongst the Sumerian tribesmen. According to Christian O'Brien, in his book "The Genius of the Few" The great 'Lord Anu' decided to 'plant a garden in Eden', and so bring agriculture to the Middle East. Although it seems at face value that this is where agriculture began, Lord Anu arrived armed with a pre-existing knowledge of agriculture and how to build dams. More ancient agricultural plains must lie in 100metres of water on the continental shelf around India, unfortunately this can only be surmised by circumstantial evidence.

The student of history may draw upon the subject matter and methods of many academic disciplines. Thus, social history employs the methods of the social sciences, including quantitative analysis, in examining social movements and issues in the past; psycho-history utilizes the approaches of psychology in the study of the behavior of historically significant individuals and groups; and the development of the various areas of human intellectual and cultural activity, for instance, the arts and sciences, are studied to inform us of how and why people have thought as they did.

    REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MAJOR IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES Students earning a degree in Religious Studies are expected to:
    • Examine a variety of the world's religious traditions Understand at least one tradition in depth Become familiar with manifestations of religious awe in such things as texts, rituals, social institutions, and personal expression Understand different methodological approaches to religion Assess scholarly literatures on religion, conduct their own research into the subject, and present their conclusions clearly in speech and writing.
    Accordingly, a baccalaureate degree in Religious Studies requires students not only to complete a series of courses, but also to acquire the skills to analyze religion and to communicate their findings cogently.

    Students subject to the 1991-92 or later Bulletins must:

    A. Language. Two upper division language courses (normally up to the 101 level or equivalent, Advanced Japanese II, for example) in one of the following languages: for East Asia, Chinese, Japanese or Korean; for Latin America, either Portuguese or Spanish; for Europe, French, German, Italian or Spanish. (Other languages may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.) The language requirement may be waived through examination by a faculty member designated by the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures of Santa Clara University. Students wishing to use a mother tongue (other than English) to fulfill this requirement are not automatically considered proficient. They must shoulder the burden of proof. Such students are also asked to demonstrate their competence in written English by passing one upper division English course with a strong writing component.

    My students seem to be very concerned and also very divided on how to approach the difficult subject of human rights in non-Western societies. Is it right, the question is often asked, that non-Western societies should be encouraged and pressed to conform to "Western values of liberty and freedom”? Is this not cultural imperialism? The notion of human rights builds on the idea of a shared humanity. These rights are not derived from citizenship of any country, or membership of any nation, but taken as entitlements of every human being. The concept of universal human rights is, in this sense, a uniting idea. Yet the subject of human rights has ended up being a veritable battleground of political debates and ethical disputes, particularly in their application to non-Western societies. Why so? A Clash of Cultures?

    The address President Johnson delivered on AprIl 7, 1965 at Johns Hopkins University is important for two reasons. On the one hand, the President has shown for the first time a way out of the impasse in which we find ourselves in Vietnam. By agreeing to negotiations without preconditions he has opened the door to negotiations which those preconditions had made impossible from the outset. On the other hand, the President reiterated the intellectual assumptions and policy proposals which brought us to an impasse and which make it impossible to extricate ourselves. The President has linked our involvement in Vietnam with our war of independence and has proclaimed the freedom of all nations as the goal of our foreign policy. He has started from the assumption that there are two Vietnamese nations, one of which has attacked the other, and he sees that attack as an integral part of unlimited Chinese aggression. Consistent with this assumption, the President is willing to negotiate with China and North Vietnam but not with the Viet Cong. We are militarily engaged in Vietnam by virtue of a basic principle of our foreign policy that was implicit in the Truman Doctrine of 1947 and was put into practice by John Foster Dulies from 1954 onward. This principle is the military containment of Communism. Containment had its origins in Europe; Dulles applied it to the Middle East and Asia through a series of bilateral and multilateral alliances. Yet what was an outstanding success In Europe turned out to be a dismal failure elsewhere. The reasons for that failure are twofold.
