From the Paper:
" I.F. Stone, author of The Hidden History of the Korean War, became a professional journalist at the age of fourteen, and has worked for a number of prestigious periodicals. He is a "man of the independent Left" (xiv), and has been often critical of the government, which suggests that his examination of the Korean War will reveal that that war was not grounded in the best of intentions. This is, indeed, what we find. Stone wrote the book to expose what one observer calls "the greatest swindle in the whole of military history" (xv). Specifically, Stone argues that the Korean War was a cruel fraud from its inception. When peace was at hand, it was sabotaged by forces which wanted the war to continue. Stone himself declares that his book has three basic purposes.." Term Paper #29383 Add to Cart (You can always remove it later) Korean History: The Climate and Culture of Foreign Business

History and Government
History: The first civilisation in Korea was centred on the state of Choson which developed in the northwest corner of the peninsula in the second century BC. Choson steadily expanded until it came up against the more advanced Yen, a feudal empire which governed much of northern China. At the beginning of the first century BC, China, now ruled by the Han dynasty, attacked and destroyed Choson and governed the northern part of the peninsula for the next 400 years. To the south, a number of independent rival kingdoms evolved, of which the most important was the Silla in the southeast. In alliance with the Chinese Tang dynasty, which had taken over in northern China in AD 618, the Silla defeated their competitors and created a single political entity in Korea in AD 668 for the first time. Around AD 870, a wave of rebellions broke out across Silla-controlled territory: this triggered the gradual disintegration of the Silla empire and a period of chaos in which rival forces struggled for control. The eventual victor in the early tenth century was the Koryo dynasty, once vanquished by the Silla, who allied themselves with the Song dynasty in China. The Koryo emulated the Song in establishing an advanced cultural and technological society (including the invention of printing in 1234, two centuries before its discovery in the West).

Abstract
Extract from Introduction
Executive Summary

In this respect, the Korean market is still highly centralised, with the leading competitors tending to work as much together as in competition, often creating cartels that make it difficult for foreign companies to break into the market.
New technologies are being developed at present, although the economic crisis of 1997 and 1998 has slowed down progress in the broadband sectors, which had already got underway prior to this time.
Cable TV has a high penetration in South Korea, although this tends to be restricted to the main urban areas, with rural regions relying on satellite broadcasts.
ADSL and ISDN services are being rolled out at present, and although have low overall market penetration, are expected to make a strong impression in the business-to-business communications sector.

Daniel C. Kane In February 1866 anti-Christian persecutions by the Taewongun resulted in the execution of nine French Jesuit missionaries secretly proselytizing in Korea. French reaction was extreme, with the French Far Eastern Squadron undertaking a small-scale invasion that fall. The attack, made in hopes of inflicting retribution and gaining concessions, was a dismal failure, ending in French withdrawal and the end of French missionary activity in Korea for a decade. The decision to attack has usually been viewed solely in its "Korean context" and thus been interpreted as a rash reaction to events there by the leading French diplomat in China. When viewed in the broader context of French policy in the Far East, especially China, the French decision to attack can be better understood.

THE MEDIA TAX PROBE AND THE MEDIA REFORM MOVEMENT IN SOUTH KOREA By Seung-Mock Yang Seung-Mock Yang is professor of Communication at Seoul National University in Korea. A graduate of Seoul National University, he received his Ph.D. in Communication from Stanford University in 1988. His research has focused on political communication, especially the role of mass media in political processes such as elections and public opinion formation. In 2001, the Korean government subjected the country's media to an unprecedented tax audit resulting in a furious debate about the government's true motivations. Was this move intended to encourage transparency and accountability in a media that is dominated by a few powerful players? Or was it born of the government's desire to muzzle media criticism? At a New Year's press conference on January 11, 2001, South Korean President Kim Dae-Jung made an unexpected statement on "media reform" that marked the first shot in what was soon to become a bitter struggle between the government and the media:
