Korean Culture Summer Study Program
The Korean Culture Summer Study program introduces students to Korean culture, language, and history. This two-week program is offered from mid-May to the end of May. Classes are held at the Catholic University of Korea, where students will be able to interact with Korean college students while listening to lectures on the language, family, economy, and the history of Korea. Field trips to historical and traditional cultural places will allow students to see first hand the beauty and history of Korea, thus enriching their in-class learning.

Culture
Print Preview of Section Historically, Korea was strongly influenced by Chinese culture and acted as a conduit of culture from China to Japan. Koreans adapted many Chinese art forms with innovation and skill, creating distinctively Korean forms. For many centuries, metalwork, sculpture, painting, and ceramics flourished throughout the Korea Peninsula. Buddhism provided one of the most significant sources for artistic expression. Confucianism, also prominent, emphasized the importance of literature and calligraphy, as well as portrait and landscape painting. Koreans began to incorporate Western forms after Korea opened itself to the Western world in the late 1800s. During the period of Japanese colonial rule (1910-1945), indigenous traditions were strongly discouraged. Since then, however, Koreans have made a concerted effort to keep their cultural traditions alive. Koreans possess a deep appreciation for their cultural heritage. The government encourages the traditional arts, as well as modern forms, through funding and education programs as well as sponsorship of a national competitive exhibition each year.

To Live and Teach in South Korea
    By Jalel Marti Sager
Working in South Korea will change your life. This is guaranteed. Exactly how it does this depends largely on how you begin. There are three keys to being a successful “native speaker,” as you will be known. The first is to find the right working and living conditions. The second is to understand Korean culture and attitudes toward work. The third, and probably most important, is your own attitude. South Korea is a country of rugged and unsurpassed beauty, covered with mountains, surrounded by seas. Its people are some of the warmest and most generous on earth. Its culture is ancient, refined, and filled with vitality. There is little crime here—cars are left untended and running, house doors unlocked, and goods out in the open. For a westerner, the way Koreans trust one another seems at first naive, almost childlike. Soon one realizes this is the way things should be. Spending a year in a country with its social fabric still largely intact is endlessly refreshing. As far as work goes, it is plentiful—South Korea’s citizens place a (sometimes disturbingly) high value on English acumen. As a result there is a booming expat community in every major city. With a college degree you are virtually assured of a position. Living is cheap, and money can be saved without a great sacrifice in one’s quality of life. But in the end it is the secondary benefits that make teaching in Korea a wonderful deal.

I attended the orientation program for the Summer Institute in Korea at the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Virginia, filled with anticipation and also some uncertainty. Before I arrived in South Korea in 1995, I really didn't know what to expect. I didn't know how well I would be received or how well I would adjust. My personal preparation for my trip to Korea began by reading as much information on Korea as I could find and by talking with Korean-American friends for insight. This was the most exciting and daring trip I had ever taken before. Mentally, I prepared by reducing my expectations for fear of being disappointed, and I decided to maintain a totally open mind. During my limited time there (2 months), I wanted to learn and experience as much as I could about Korea's culture and technological advances. I was warmly welcomed and accepted upon arriving in Korea. The Korea Science and Engineering Foundation (
