Overview Kibun Inhwa Confucianism Personal Relationships - In Korea, personal relations take precedence over business. In order to be successful, it is vital to establish good, personal relationships based on mutual trust and benefit. Korean business culture is firmly grounded in respectful rapport and in order to establish this, it is essential that you have the right introduction and approach the company through a mutual friend or acquaintance at the appropriate level. Koreans spend a significant amount of time developing and fostering personal contacts. Therefore, time should be allocated for this process, particularly during the first meeting, which is frequently used to simply establish rapport and build trust. Once good, solid relations have been recognised in Korea, continuous reinforcement and maintenance is vital.
  • Working practices in Korea
Before doing business in Korea prior appointments are required and should generally be made a few weeks in advance. The most suitable times to arrange a business meeting are normally between 10am and 12pm or 2pm and 4pm.

Unlike some cultures where a single religion is dominant, Korean culture includes a wide variety of religious elements that have shaped the people's way of thinking and behavior. In the early stages of history in Korea, religious and political functions were combined but later became distinct. Historically, Koreans lived under the influences of shamanism, Buddhism, Taoism or Confucianism, and in modern times, the Christian faith has made strong inroads into the country, bringing forth yet another important factor that may change the spiritual landscape of the people. The rapid pace of industrialization which occurred within a couple of decades compared to a couple of centuries in the West, has brought about considerable anxiety and alienation while disrupting the peace of mind of Koreans, encouraging their pursuit of solace in religious activities. As a result, the population of religious believers has expanded markedly with religious institutions emerging as influential social organizations.

The industrialisation and urbanisation of South Korea have brought many changes to the way people live. In the past, most people lived in small rural villages. Changes to peoples' lifestyles have led to many young people leaving country areas to find new opportunities in the cities (particularly Seoul). In the past, it was not uncommon for several generations to live under one roof; today South Koreans are moving more towards the standard nuclear family.

This nation is not a moment.s monument. Just as Rome was not built in a day, so also the development of South Korea not completed in a very short period of time. The culture of Korea gradually evolved by the influence of natural environment, unique history and a wonderful climate. On one hand the Koreans are tolerant towards historical artifacts and architecture and refuse to consider these as redundant, on the other hand they have a passion for science and technology. This harmonious co-existence of the old and the new have slowly given shape to this unique culture that every Korean takes pride in. No wonder, UNESCO recognizes the value of this fascinating culture and have already included several Korean treasures in its world heritage list. Food: The influence of the west notwithstanding, Koreans prefer a simple fare. Rice is the staple food but they have enough resources and knowledge to prepare a variety of side dishes. Vegetable is cooked in different ways to suit the taste buds of different people. Boiled dishes are flavored with Soya sauce. Non-Veg. food items too are a delicacy. Grilled and pan-fried meat and fish can be had. People here are mad about seafood. Quite a few types of alcoholic beverages are produced in Korea. Remember the word .soju. if you desire to get a bit tipsy. Rice has been a part of the Korean diet from before the Three Kingdom period. Earlier the grain was steamed but now it is boiled. Beans, millets and other grains are often added to not only enhance the nutrition level but also add a bit of flavor and color.

South Korea adds culture to its export power
By Norimitsu Onishi The New York Times WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 2005 TAIPEI Here in one of the first corners of Asia hit by the "Korean Wave" of cultural exports, a television series about a royal cook, "A Jewel in the Palace," proved so popular that it is now used to advertise South Korea on the Taipei subway. A huge hit in Mongolia, the drama also fueled a boom in tourists from Hong Kong visiting South Korea. A weepy love story, "Winter Sonata," became the rage in Uzbekistan after it drove the Japanese into a frenzy last year. In Thailand and Malaysia, people devoured "A Tale of Autumn," and Vietnamese were glued to "Lovers in Paris." In China, South Korean dramas are sold, and pirated, everywhere, and the young adopt the clothing and hairstyles made cool by South Korean stars.

The rise of Korean popular culture
South Korea, historically more worried about fending off cultural domination by China and Japan than spreading its own culture abroad, is emerging as the pop culture leader of Asia. From well-packaged television dramas to slick movies, from pop music to online games, South Korean companies and stars are increasingly defining what the disparate people in East Asia watch, listen to and play. The size of South Korea's entertainment industry, which began attracting heavy government investment only in the late 1990's, jumped from $8.5 billion in 1999 to $43.5 billion in 2003. In 2003, South Korea exported $650 million in cultural products; the amount was so insignificant before 1998 that the government could not provide figures.

SOUTH KOREA LANGUAGE * Standard Korean is spoken across the country. English is not widely spoken, although most major businesses will have some English-speaking staff. * If you intend to distribute literature about your business when in South Korea, it is advisable to have Korean language information available, as many senior managers are unable to speak English. In view of the expense involved in printing costs, a simple word-processed translation may suffice. The effort put into the preparation of such a document may be interpreted as an indication of your company's commitment to the Korean market. BUSINESS ATTIRE * First appearances count a great deal in Korea, so it is important to always wear a suit when conducting business. Women should always wear a smart, conservative outfit. INTRODUCTIONS * Business cards are vitally important in Korea. Exchange cards whenever you meet someone new and always give and receive cards with both hands, as this is considered respectful. * When receiving another person's card, always take a few seconds to study it in their presence and never place it immediately into your pocket. A card signifies a person's status in the company you are dealing with, and it is polite to always show interest in their position. * Never fondle or write upon a person's card, as this is considered insulting.

The rise of online gaming in South Korea has brought improved economic prospects and notoriety, but at what price? By Brian Callies The bangs, and from them the current state of gaming in Korea, rose from the economic crisis that hit Korea and much of Asia in 1997. Some recently out of work Koreans had enough money in their family to open bangs which provided a cheap source of entertainment for the many laid-off workers (Herz 3). Popularity grew and more and more bangs opened up. To international gamers South Korea has become something of a Mecca. There, gaming has grown into a national sport to such an extant that three cable stations are dedicated full-time to broadcasting gaming tournaments (Herz 2). Unless ESPN were to expand to ESPN6 such a scenario is hard to imagine in the U.S. Gamers in Korea can and do become celebrities. There are professional gamers who garner the respect and adoration that professional athletes do in other countries (Electro Lobby). For U.S. gamers who are typically branded nerds or social misfits in their own country, South Korea must seem like heaven. Online gaming is South Korea is a unique phenomenon. No other place is the world is so wired, or has such a large game-playing population base, or treats their best gamers as star athletes. The dramatic rise in gaming has brought increased economic opportunities to the country and international notoriety. The culture of game playing has had a negative effect on some South Koreans, however, as gaming addicts lose touch with the real world. The net effect of this rapid growth in gaming and internet usage will be positive or negative remains to be seen.

Sometimes travel makes it happen, even on weekend getaways to the environs of mountain hermitages of South Korea. Walsh writes, "This is bliss. I am the only Westerner traveling today as always, but whereas during the week I am detached, now I feel I belong. My weariness of heightened cynicism is replaced by a tempered tranquillity, my spirit found by renunciation. To me this is what experiencing a foreign culture is all about. I have done nothing uniquely Korean on my journey, but my self-assurance is sufficient. I ask the bus driver in my limited Korean how long the stop is for. I already know – it’s always the same – but right now my self-love is smothering my self-consciousness. While in the toilet, I observe my appearance – why don’t I have a girlfriend?" - "So, before long, I found myself on a Korean Air 747 soaring over the Arctic, on the way to teach at a private school that I had never seen or heard of before. Though it didn’t seem so at first, moving to Korea turned out to be one of the best career moves I ever made." David Ritchie supplies readers with information about living and working in Korea. He lives and works in Seoul. He writes the “SeoulTalk” column for Seoulscope, the city’s entertainment magazine. His 16 published books include Will America Survive? (Cambridge India, 2000).
