General Athletics Information Contact our staff Three coaches. One university. More than 62 years combined experience. And at least one thing in common. No regrets. Hugh Welsh, Barb Felderman and Jerry Schafer have coached at South Dakota Tech for longer than some of the athletes in their programs have been alive. They all came to Tech with thoughts of moving on to bigger and better things, and they all had opportunities to do so. They all stayed for similar reasons. “I just fell in love with the type of kid we get here,” said Felderman, Tech’s women’s basketball coach who’s had the longest tenure of the tree – 24 years. “The kids here are focused, and they are in school for the right reasons.” Schafer has coached Tech’s cross country and track and field teams for 19 years, while Welsh has coached the Hardrocker men’s basketball team for the same length of time. Welsh has been Tech’s athletic director for the past nine years as well. “With three people to be together this many years, it’s really something in the athletic world,” Welsh said. “I have the utmost respect for both of them. What Barb has done at this university is absolutely incredible. From her first national tournament experience in 94-95, her teams have been amazing year after year. “Jerry is a great coach who really understands all the events,” he said. “He’s in a situation where more kids would rather play basketball than be involved in track and field, so it’s been difficult for him to attract as many quality athletes as he would have liked. But I’ve seen him take average athletes and turn them into fabulous competitors.”

Badlands National Park, South Dakota A Record in Rock
A 65 million-year-old layer of black rock called the Pierre Shale formed on the bottom of an ancient sea and is the oldest formation in the Badlands . Next come the layers of the Eocene and Oligocene epochs. These hold fossil bones of land mammals. Countless animals lived and died on these plains, their flesh and bones consumed by predators and scavengers. Those remains left intact were buried by periodic floods and converted into fossils. These deposits constitute one of the richest fossil beds known. The great variety of Badlands fossils has given the Oligocene the name "Golden Age of Mammals" Of Time and the Badlands
Out of the Dakota prairie, rain, wind and frost have carved steep canyons, sharp ridges, gullies, spires, and knobs, providing a glimpse into the relentless pace of geologic change. For not only has erosion created a new landscape, it has also bared rocks laid down as sediments during the Eocene and Oligocene epochs between 37 and 23 million years ago revealing a record of the past to us.

Page 3 of 10 State Context
South Dakota is a sparsely populated state with 738,000 residents. Ninety percent of the population is Caucasian and 8% is of American Indian descent. Over 50% of the population live in rural towns with less than 2,500 people. Sioux Falls is the largest city, with slightly more than 114,000 residents. The state's population will grow at a slow rate over the next 15 years, but the number of South Dakota high school graduates is projected to decline 3.3% over the same time period ( see Figure 1 South Dakota has experienced a strong economy over the last several years and, according to a state economist, the state was not severely hit by the recession of the early 1990s. State advertisements maintain that South Dakota offers one of the best business climates in the nation, as one of five states with no corporate income tax, as one of seven states with no personal income tax, and as a state with no business inventory tax. Although many companies have relocated to South Dakota in the last several years, the state's 1996 income per capita of $20,749 remains well below the United States average of $24,436.
