64. Mathematics in Context

Mathematics in Context is a comprehensive mathematics curriculum for grades 5-8 developed in collaboration with the Freudenthal Institute in The Netherlands and funded by the National Science Foundation. Project director is School of Education Professor Thomas Romberg. The curriculum reflects the content and pedagogy suggested by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Curriculum and Evaluation of Standards for School Mathematics and NCTM's Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics. The curriculum materials were field tested in classrooms in Madison, Verona and Stoughton in Dane County, in three other districts in Wisconsin, and in districts throughout the United States. Encyclopedia Britannica Education Corporation now publishes and markets the curriculum. It is now being used with nearly one million students in more than 400 school districts in the country. 65. Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI)
Cognitively Guided Instruction is a professional development program designed to help primary grade teachers understand children's mathematics thinking and use this knowledge to make instructional decisions. CGI was developed by School of Education Professors Thomas Carpenter and Elizabeth Fennema, and was funded by the National Science Foundation from 1985 through 1996. Studies have shown that compared to control classes, CGI classes place a greater emphasis on problem-solving, give students greater freedom to construct their own strategies for solving problems, have teachers who know more about their students' thinking, and have students who score higher on problem-solving.

    NASA Teacher Resource Center Network
    NASA Educational Affairs Division
For more than 25 years, the NASA Educational Affairs Division has provided educational programs and materials for teachers and students from the elementary to the university level. The NASA Teacher Resource Center Network, a dissemination mechanism to provide educators with NASA educational materials, is one of the programs that has helped science and mathematics teachers over the years.
    NASA Teacher Resource Center Network
Teachers need immediate access to the information that is generated by NASA programs, technologies, and discoveries, so they can bring that excitement into their classrooms. NASA educational materials are related to art, mathematics, energy, physics, careers, spaceflight, aeronautics, technology utilization, physical science, and social science. They are a valuable supplement to textbook instruction. To help disseminate these materials to elementary and secondary educators, the NASA Educational Affairs Division has established the NASA Teacher Resource Center Network (TRCN). The Network comprises Teacher Resource Centers (TRCs), Regional Teacher Resource Centers (RTRCs), and the Central Operation of Resources for Educators (CORE).
    Teacher Resource Centers
Located at the nine NASA research centers, TRCs have a variety of NASA-related educational materials in several formats: video tapes, slides, audio tapes, publications, lesson plans, and activities. NASA educational materials are available to be copied at the TRCs.
