Two of the students each will receive $50,000 college scholarships. All others will get $1,000 scholarships. The two top winners will be announced at a Free Spirit ceremony at the National Press Club on March 24.
The scholarship winners will be brought here to receive their awards and participate in a journalism conference which culminates with attendance at the Al Neuharth Free Spirit of the Year Award ceremony. At the event, students will have the opportunity to meet the 2003 Al Neuharth Free Spirit of the Year, Greg Mortenson, a Montana humanitarian who has dedicated his life to establishing schools in Central Asia.
The program, funded by the Freedom Forum, began in 1999 to honor Neuharth, founder of the Freedom Forum and USA TODAY. The scholarships and conference program are designed to assist students who are pursuing journalism careers and to inspire them through conference sessions with prominent media professionals. The Close Up Foundation assists the Freedom Forum in administering the program.
"We want to encourage these young people to become free-spirited journalists who dream, dare and do," Neuharth said.

The first archaeologically recorded human societies in South Dakota stalked the now extinct woolly mammoth and bison antiquus. Campfire scars, tipi rings, buffalo jumps, stone tools, spear points, stylized rock carvings and other prehistoric clues indicate that these people lived in South Dakota more than 11,000 years ago.
Sandstone cliffs in the Cave Hills area (northwestern South Dakota) display symbols and animal images carved there over the last 5,000 years. This area contains the state's best display of rock art.
The glacial lakes in northeastern South Dakota offer evidence of Woodland peoples, who were the state's first gardeners. Artifacts from a village discovered at Roy Lake date the site sometime around 900 to 1300 A.D. Pottery shards and burial mounds found throughout eastern South Dakota indicate the presence of these prehistoric peoples.
Plains village sites more than 900 years old have been discovered along the Missouri and other South Dakota rivers. These ancient hunters and gardeners built large earth-lodge towns surrounded by ditches to keep out enemies. They grew crops such as corn, beans, squash and sunflowers. Above Crow Creek along Lake Francis Case, archaeologists have salvaged the remains of nearly 500 villagers in a fortification trench surrounding the village. The villagers were killed by competing groups.

Project Overview 1. We entered our Web Site in CyberFair category: Local Attractions 2. Description of "Our Community" Dakota Meadows Middle School is located in south central Minnesota, USA, about 90 miles south of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. Dakota Meadows serves the communities of Mankato and North Mankato and surrounding agricultural area. The school sets on the plains above the confluence of the the Blue Earth and Minnesota Rivers. The rivers join at a bend in the Minnesota where it turns north to meet the Mississippi River in St. Paul. Native Americans, the Dakota, lived in the river valleys and surrounding plains when Europeans arrived in the mid-1800's. The valleys provided water, food, and shelter for the native Dakota. Clean water and fertile river valley soil attracted immigrants. Many early settlers arrived by steamboats. Boats brought supplies and moved farm products out of the area until the railroad was built. Today, the towns of Mankato and North Mankato have a combined population of over 40,000. They serve as the education and retail center for the agriculturally-based economy of south central Minnesota.
