For Grandparents and Special Others Raising Children South Dakota
Grandparents and Other Relatives Raising Children A State Fact Sheet August 2002
Across the country, more than six million children approximately 1 in 12 children are living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. South Dakota has more than 113,000 children living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. In many of these households, grandparents and other relatives are the primary caregivers (“kinship caregivers”) for children whose parents cannot or will not care for them due to substance abuse, illness and death, abuse and neglect, economic hardship, incarceration, divorce, domestic violence, and other family and community crises. In response to the growing numbers of these kinship care families, state legislatures, public and private agencies, and grassroots coalitions in South Dakota and across the country have begun to expand services and supports for children living with kin inside and outside of the foster care system. A Look at the Numbers: Kinship Care in South Dakota The data below show the numbers of grandparents who are living in households with at least one grandchild under the age of 18, as well as the numbers of grandparents who are the primary caregivers for these grandchildren. These numbers were reported by the 2000 U.S. Census and are available for every place (as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau) in the country, including cities, towns, villages, and boroughs, on the U.S. Census website.

Displaced children in Sudan. Photo: Nils Carstensen/DCA Sudan Council of Churches (SCC) was established in 1965 with the aim of working towards the unity of its member churches and promotion of common witness. A sister Council was set up in 1989 known as New Sudan Council of Churches (NSCC). The SCC serves the churches and the needy in government controlled areas, whereas the NSCC does the same work in areas under the current or past control of Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) or other parties. SCC exists to engage churches and people of goodwill in advocacy for peace, justice, equality, and human rights in the Sudan and to enable member churches to acquire skills and resources for ministering in word and service to the Sudanese people and the poor in multi-faith, multi-ethnic, and conflict situations. An estimated 1,200 children are to be assisted through nutrition education, antenatal care, and therapeutic nutritional care in the camp of Geberona (El Salaama). CWS 2004 support is directed towards SCC/NSR core/staff costs as well as new PHCP Child Health/Therapeutic Feeding activities. The target group includes children below five years of age for primary immunization and those malnourished with less than 80 percent weight-for-height for therapeutic wet feeding. Indirectly, CWS’s support will reach an anticipated 150,000 IDPs in the camps, as well as 30,000 people living in areas near the camps. In general, PHCP/NSR’s services are delivered to all, regardless of race or religion, but special attention is given to women and children as they are considered to be the poorest of the poor. There are currently three clinics being fully run by SCC’s program, one clinic in Khartoum and two others in Kosti and Gedarif.

http://www.nativeshop.org/nawherc.html
About the Native American Women's Health Education Resource Center In 1985, a group of Native Americans living on or near the Yankton Sioux Reservation in South Dakota formed the Native American Community Board (NACB) to address pertinent issues of health, education, land and water rights, and economic development of Native American people. In 1986, the Native American Community Board incorporated under the laws of South Dakota as a non-profit tax-exempt 501 (c) 3 organization. The first NACB project developed was "Women and Children in Alcohol," a Fetal Alcohol Syndrome program. This program defined the direction of subsequent health work. In February of 1988, the NACB opened the Native American Women's Health Education Resource Center, the first resource center located on a reservation in the US. In October of 1991, after a long legal battle, the Domestic Violence Program of the Resource Center opened a shelter for battered women a few blocks away from the Resource Center. The shelter is a modern, spacious, four-bedroom home and is able to provide women and their children with a safe place to escape domestic violence and sexual assualt. The Resource Center has expanded to include many programs benefitting people locally, nationally, and internationally. Some examples are the Domestic Violence Program, AIDS Prevention Program, Youth Services which include the Child Development Program and the Youth Wellness Program, Adult Learning Program, Environmental Awareness and Action Project, Cancer Prevention, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Awareness Program, Clearinghouse of Educational Materials, Food Pantry

Multi-Cultural Center of Sioux Falls Sioux Falls, South Dakota Internet Address: B1Forinash@aol.com Introduction Over the past few years, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has experienced an influx of immigrant and refugee families. Though there are some limited resources available to these individuals upon arrival, social services and assistance are limited in quantity and duration. Like many Native Americans and even members of mainstream society, new arrivals must meet the challenges of daily survival in a culture for which they are not prepared. For refugees and immigrants, the added factor of having to assimilate a new language may present the biggest hurdle. They need to learn about opportunities and services to develop or enhance skills that will help them cope effectively with their "new" cultural environment. In this way, they can make positive contributions to the community and lead more productive and satisfying lives.
