It Takes More Than An Apple a Day to Keep Your Child Healthy
(Page 1 of 1) There’s a new kind of food fight erupting at schools, districts and state legislatures as alarm over childhood obesity spreads. What's a parent to do? By GreatSchools.net Staff From the school board to the statehouse, efforts to ban sugary foods and combat childhood obesity are being debated around the nation. The results have been mixed. In New Jersey, soda, candy and foods listing sugar as the principal ingredient will be banned beginning in the 2007 school year. In Connecticut, on the other hand, the governor vetoed a similar measure. The statistics that point to an epidemic of childhood obesity are clear: One in five children is overweight, and the number of overweight children has quadrupled since 1960, according to the National Institutes of Health. There is also plenty of evidence of kids’ poor eating habits: In his book

TDC Competency Development Project
The TDC is beginning work to draft a set of "competencies" for SEA/LEA project managers. Described by professional literature as "a cluster of related knowledge, attitudes, and skills that affects a major part of one's job, role, or responsibility," comptencies correlate with performance on a job and can be measured against standards. For the TDC, it is important to note that competencies can be improved through training and development. Once developed, competencies would enable SEA/LEA (HIV/CSHP) project managers to:
  • better understand the competencies needed for carrying out project tasks within the agency better understand staff professional development needs select appropriate professional development activities utilize professional development activities for continuous improvement
In addition, competencies could be used by:
  • TDC members to collect information on the needs of SEA/LEA staff attending TDC events TDC members to develop and tailor TDC events to meet the developmental needs of SEA/LEA staff attending them CDC project officers to discuss professional development selections and outcomes with SEA/LEA managers
Over the coming months, the TDC will engage in a process that will result in the development of draft competencies to be piloted in the Summer/Fall 2001. As part of this process, a 15-member working group, composed of LEA and SEA managers and TDC members, will convene in February. This group will develop a draft document that will be sent to a broader audience for review.

Congressional Delegation Urges USDA to Include State in in Fresh Fruit and Vegetable School Lunch Program
July 2, 2004 Washington, DC –Senator Tom Daschle, Senator Tim Johnson, and Representative Stephanie Herseth announced that South Dakota children should soon have access to a federal program that makes fresh fruit and vegetables available through the school lunch program. The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, which was enacted as part of the 2002 farm bill, was expanded through the passage of a bill reauthorizing children's nutrition programs that opened the fruit and vegetable program to additional states. The President signed the legislation into law this week. During the Senate's consideration of the bill, Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), the senior Democrat on the Agriculture Committee, in an exchange with committee chairman Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS) on the Senate floor, confirmed that South Dakota is expected to be among the new states to participate. Senators Daschle and Johnson and Representative Herseth wrote to Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman asking her to pledge that South Dakota would become part of the program. They said the bill would reinforce the importance of instilling in children good nutritional habits at an early age; the role of poor diet in the development of chronic disease, such as diabetes and heart disease; and the importance of giving children healthy food choices while they are at school.

But how successfully are the two combined? Very successfully, if you're talking about food distribution in South Dakota. South Dakota's finely tuned system is a good example of how far some states have come in recent years in streamlining and modernizing their food distribution programs.
