South Dakota in Action
A state nutrition and physical activity planning group has begun developing a comprehensive state plan. The planning group is drawing on existing obesity prevention activities while working to expand and diversify the obesity prevention partnership. The planning process was kicked off by a Governor’s Healthy South Dakota Summit on April 8, 2005. CDC Director Dr. Julie Gerberding was keynote speaker.
The department publishes an annual edition of the School Height and Weight Report that includes guidance on preventing obesity for parents, children, teachers, coaches, and school food-service staff. The South Dakota Health Care Commission’s Subcommittee on Disease Management and Promotion of Healthy Behaviors has worked at the local level to encourage healthy behaviors through environmental and policy changes.

Following the creation and expansion of the domestic food assistance programs in the second half of the 20th century, severe hunger, which had been a significant national problem, has become rare. The food assistance programs were developed in several steps. Concerns about the nutritional status of young men drafted for service in World War II led to the enactment of the National School Lunch Act in 1946. The Food Stamp Program was established on a pilot basis in the early 1960s, and extended nationwide in the early 1970s
