The I.D. Weeks Library at the University of South Dakota is one of two university libraries to participate in the Library Technology Access (LTA) initiative sponsored by Hewlett-Packard and the Association of Specialized and Collaborative Libraries (ASCLA). Through the LTA initiative, the I.D. Weeks Library installed two assistive/adaptive PC workstations designed to give access to library resources to people with disabilities. One workstation, designed for individuals with low-vision or blindness, includes the following software packages: JAWS for Windows and OpenBook from Freedom Scientific, and ZoomText Magnifier from Ai Squared. JAWS and OpenBook software packages read scanned or Internet text to patrons. ZoomText Magnifier is a software package that provides patrons with various viewing selections so they can scan, magnify, and change font colors in order to increase their ability to read or hear the text they select. This workstation also includes an Aladdin Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) from Telesensory that can be used to magnify printed materials, change color overlays of text, and mark text with horizontal or vertical highlights.

Johnson Announces $496,750 Funding for South Dakota Library Network
September 5, 2003 Washington, DC- U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) announced today that the South Dakota Board of Regents will receive an award in the sum of $496,750 for the coming year from the United States Department of Education. The money will go towards an upgrade of the South Dakota Library Network. This will allow the library to upgrade to a new computer system and also provide an integrated library system; this will affect sixty South Dakota libraries statewide from elementary to the university system. This funding will provide enhanced web-based services for students, reference databases and will integrate the traditional card catalog with electronic services. Warren Wilson, Director of Regents Information Systems for the South Dakota Board of Regents said, "SDLN is so pleased to receive the congressional award. This award will allow the SDLN member libraries to implement a new library automation system, upgrade to a new web interface, and do more staff training. The new system should be in place by the fall of 2004." "This program will use current and updated technology to link students from all over the state. This is a wonderful educational tool for all involved," said Johnson.

For Immediate Release: Friday, May 9, 2003 South Dakota Library Network to Switch Software RAPID CITY - The South Dakota Board of Regents today approved a contract for installing new software to improve the South Dakota Library Network's (SDLN's) operation, replacing an outdated system. The Regents operate the library network on behalf of member libraries across the state. The system's $1.3 million cost will be covered by a $500,000 federal grant, along with user fees paid by the libraries. "Anticipating the need for new system software, SDLN member libraries already set aside about $800,000 in reserve for the purchase," said Regents' Executive Director Robert T. Tad Perry. Perry said the $1.3 million price tag includes software, hardware, training, and implementation services. The new software comes from Ex Libris, a worldwide supplier of software solutions and related services for libraries and information centers. The company's flagship product, ALEPH 500, is a market leader in the field of library automation for higher education, as well as for public, national, and research libraries, consortia and national networks, and large corporations.

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003 Regents' Information Systems Director Receives Award PIERRE - The director of the Regents' Information Systems for the South Dakota Board of Regents has received special recognition from the South Dakota Library Association (SDLA). Warren J. Wilson received the SDLA's 2003 Friend of the Library award at the group's annual meeting last week. Wilson has been employed with the Regents' Information Systems in Vermillion since 1990. "This award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated initiative, support, and creativity on behalf of a South Dakota library or libraries," said Robert T. Tad Perry, the Regents' executive director. "Warren is deeply involved in issues affecting not only our university libraries, but he's also a leader in efforts to enhance the sharing of library resources statewide through the South Dakota Library Network." The Regents operate the South Dakota Library Network on behalf of member libraries across the state. Earlier this year, a $1.3 million project was launched to install new software that will improve the state library network's operation. A $500,000 congressional award was secured to pay for part of the project's cost.

Since 1999 teenwire.com, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) award-winning sexual health Web site for teens, has provided medically accurate and honest sexual health information in language that teens understand. But for teens in South Dakota, the life-saving information on sexual health available on teenwire.com has become much more difficult to find. On May 12, Bishop Robert Carlson of the Sioux Falls Catholic Diocese wrote South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds a letter, urging him to remove a teenwire.com link from the State Library's Web site. According to The Argus Leader , Carlson's letter said, "I find it extremely troubling that the State of South Dakota would encourage our young women and men to turn to Planned Parenthood for any guidance ? I believe the State of South Dakota must adopt policies and positions favoring chastity and abstinence over the 'safe sex' message now prevalent in our society."
