HOME ARCHAEOLOGY ARCHIVES HISTORIC PRESERVATION ... FAQ Genealogy Resources The genealogy collection housed at the South Dakota State Archives is a comprehensive collection of state, federal, and private records documenting South Dakota History. While a limited amount of the collection relates to other states, the bulk of the collection contains South Dakota materials. The Archives genealogy collection originated following the creation of the State Historical Society in 1891. Over the years material has been added to the collection through the efforts of the Historical Society, state government, genealogical societies, and private individuals. Today the collection continues to grow. Gifts of genealogy materials and cash enrich the collection and are tax-deductible. Donations may be made directly to the South Dakota State Archives. Top Collections Government Records : State records include population censuses (1895-1945), school censuses, naturalizations, probates, penitentiary prisoner files, various other county records, maps and veteran bonus files. Federal records include population censuses (1860-1920), homestead land tract books, military post returns during the 1800s, Bureau of Indian Affairs records, and WPA cemetery survey files. Of particular interest are the early reservation censuses which are written in Lakota, Nakota, and Dakota languages. Library Materials

About the South Dakota GenWeb Project
In June, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the South Dakota Comprehensive Genealogy Database (SDGenweb) similar to the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database founded by Jeff Murphy. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in South Dakota, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page. SDGenweb has numerous links to other information for Yankton County. It's worth visiting there as well. SDGenweb is part of the

The Charbonneau Family THESE PAGES ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION Please check back often as I will be adding material as time permits Since the earliest Charbonneau settlers immigrated to Canada, the Charbonneau name has been changed, shortened, and more Americanized. This due to the fact that many Charbonneau's did not read nor write English, leaving it up to whomever happened to be filling out any forms or documents to spell the name phonically. Therefore the Charbonneau surname was changed over the years. Below is an example of some variants. As a researcher of this Surname, it makes for an extensive and adventurous journey to learn about our ancestors. Charbono, Chabino, Chavenuea, Charbineau, Shabino, Sharbino, Shawbono, Cherbon, Charbono I would like to dedicate this website to my mother Neva Beverly Grafft-Clark whom without all her hard work and research, I would not have this information to share. I would also like to acknowledge my Cousins: Mark Slade, Deb Hochhalter, and Art Chabino who share the same dream of completing this side of our family tree. Without their help I would not have near as much information to share. Shabino Facts and Fancies By Olive M.Shabino
