The SDCIA Organization

South Dakota Crop Improvement Association (SDCIA) was formed in 1925 through consolidation of the SD Corn Growers and Breeders Association, founded in 1906, the SD Grain Growers Association, organized in 1910, and the SD Experiment Association, established in 1912. The Association has headquarters in Brookings, where it is housed within the Plant Science Department in the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences at SD State University (SDSU HOW WE ARE GOVERNED: County Crop Improvement Associations are organized within the counties and elect their own directors and officers. THE SDCIA MISSION: SDCIA was formed and is directed by its members as an effective voice of action in all aspects of producing and marketing agricultural crops, including the promotion of agricultural research and education of members. The delivery of research through the release of public crop varieties has been, and remains, a major focus. Seed is a product of research and the delivery vehicle for new and improved genetics. While seed is basic to life and good seed is basic to sound agricultural growth and prosperity, it is not the only reason for the Association's existence. Only a portion of the members actively produce varieties for sale as certified seed. While the organization has evolved through many changes over the years, including changes in its name, its motive has remained the same:

The planning process was kicked off by a Governor’s Healthy South Dakota Summit on April 8, 2005. CDC Director Dr. Julie Gerberding was keynote speaker.
The department publishes an annual edition of the School Height and Weight Report that includes guidance on preventing obesity for parents, children, teachers, coaches, and school food-service staff. The South Dakota Health Care Commission’s Subcommittee on Disease Management and Promotion of Healthy Behaviors has worked at the local level to encourage healthy behaviors through environmental and policy changes.

Choosing a School in South Dakota
(Page 1 of 5) To simplify the school choice process, you'll need to learn what to consider and how to evaluate your options. By GreatSchools.net Staff Click here to read this article in Spanish. Whether you are choosing a school for the first time for your child or your child is making the transition to a new school, you probably have many questions. What are your options? How much choice do you really have? What's the best option for your child and your family? Where should you begin? School choice options available to parents have increased dramatically in recent years. There's a growing national sentiment that promoting competition in public education may spur schools to improve and that parents who invest energy in choosing a school will continue to be involved in their child's education.

Private vs. Public Schools: What's the Difference?
(Page 1 of 3) Your goal is to find a school that will meet your child's needs. But how do you choose between a public school and a private school? By Victoria Thorp and Jesse James, GreatSchools.net Staff
    Cost
Public schools cannot charge tuition. They are funded through federal, state and local taxes. When you pay your taxes, you are paying for your child's education and the education of other children in your community. Private schools cost money. Private schools do not receive tax revenues, but instead are funded through tuition, fundraising, donations and private grants. According to the National Association of Independent Schools, the median tuition for private day schools in the United States is close to $12,000 for grades 1 to 3, $13,000 for grades 6 to 8 and $15,000 for grades 9 to 12. The median tuition for boarding schools is $12,000 for grades 1 to 3, $27,000 for grades 6 to 9, and $28,000 for grades 9 to 12. Parochial schools generally charge somewhat less.

    ADOPTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF
    TEACHER CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT
David J. Mathieu David J. Mathieu received his M.A. degree at the University of Minnesota. He presently is with the Center of Indian Studies at Black Hills State College in Spearfish, South Dakota. THE South Dakota State Board of Education recently adopted a requirement stating that all new teachers must have three semester hours of American Indian Studies. Though limited in the amount of course work that is required, the development of the requirement and the nature of its accompanying guidelines may serve as a model for other states considering similar requirements. In tracing the development of the requirement and guidelines, one must begin with the original proposal developed by the South Dakota Indian Education Association. Recognizing the need for teacher training institutions to address the needs of Indian children in the state, the Association worked toward the adoption of a certification requirement in American Indian studies in 1974. In a resulting position paper (see Note 1), the Association recommended that the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education, South Dakota Department of Education and Cultural Affairs, adopt a nine semester hour requirement in Indian studies for teacher education programs in the state. The nine hour requirement was to include three hours of methods in the education of the culturally different, three hours of Indian history and culture, and three hours of Indian-related course work in the student’s major or minor field of interest.

Service-Learning Volunteer Program on Lakota Native American Reservation
The Lakota Nation, located in South Dakota in the heart of the Great Plains of the United States, with its unique geography and the culture and history shaped by it, has been a defining image of the United States. It is the homeland of the Lakota/Dakota peoples, sometimes erroneously referred to as the Sioux Indians. Understanding the origin of these terms and what is appropriate and acceptable to the Indian culture is part of what you will learn. You live and volunteer in an American Indian community, encountering directly the issues and concerns confronting a "culture within a culture." Volunteering placements are on the reservations, such as Rosebud, Cheyenne River, Standing Rock, Pine Ridge, or Sisseton. You visit and learn about Wounded Knee, the Badlands, Black Hills, Bear Butte, and significant Dakota sites in Minnesota. Depending on the time of year you may be able to attend regional pow wows or be introduced to other aspects of the Lakota/Dakota heritage. In the program you will be taught by the faculty of South Dakota State University, and will have presentations by Lakota/Dakota speakers. Along with your readings, field trips and service experience, the teachers and lecturers will help you understand the differences, subtleties, varied histories, and contemporary concerns of the Plains peoples.
