The fundamental goal of our publication is to educate, motivate and elucidate and as many readers realize, we highlight special efforts from time to time such as the strengthening and modernizing of the IDEA and that is why this issue hits that subject so hard and with your support our country will do it. Advocacy for these groups is crucial as their needs are often exacerbated by lower income, thus further limiting their access to justice in the areas of employment, housing, etc. Fifty-seven courts or bar associations indicated in their 2001 survey responses that they support activities addressing special needs. Among the many programs are the following: "He Loves Me…Not," the Arkansas Bar Association video on the prevention of dating violence, was distributed to all high schools in the state. The state public television affiliate aired three, one-hour TV call-in programs, using the video in its entirety as a centerpiece. Most of these programs follow the same program design as the IPSL undergraduate programs, which include academic study, living in a homestay with a local family or on a campus with international students, and serving 15-20 hours a week in established service agency. With the Special Eduation focus, your service will be in the form of an internship serving individuals with special needs, supervised by professionals; and your academic studies will focus on the culture in which you are living and the issues of children and adults with special needs. FOREWORD
For more than eighteen years, the POCKET GUIDE TO FEDERAL HELP FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES has been one of the most widely distributed publications produced by the U.S. Department of Education and its predecessor, the Office of Education in the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. Since its inception in 1980, the Department of Education has committed itself to ensuring that all individuals with disabilities achieve their full potential as productive, fully-contributing members of our society. The publication of this booklet is part of this continuing effort. Written for people with disabilities, their families, and service providers, this publication contains information on government-wide benefits and services for which individuals with disabilities may be eligible. As we publish this new edition, it is our sincere hope that it will reach the wide and varied audience for which it is intended, and that it will increase awareness and provide useful information.
