South Carolina Researchers Study Pesticide’s Effects on Tiny Mud-Dwelling Creatures
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 08, 2004
In an approach reminiscent of the “canary in a coal mine,” South Carolina Sea Grant Researcher Thomas Chandler and colleagues are using the marine copepod Amphiascus tenuiremis, a tiny shrimp-like creature, to test for potentially harmful effects related to the new pesticide fibronil. Highly toxic, fibronil is being used on golf courses and other areas adjacent to estuarine systems in South Carolina. Specifically, the researchers are looking for dysfunctions caused by exposure to fibronil and are carrying out breeding experiments to test for heritability of pesticide resistance. The microscopic A. tenuiremis, which lives in bottom sediments where contaminants tend to accumulate, is the only sexually reproducing marine animal that can be completely cultured in the laboratory in only 200 microliters of seawater over many generations to study effects of toxins on their reproduction. Toxicity can be studied on each life stage: egg production, hatching, larval growth and survival, and adult reproductive success. Examining the life cycles of tiny organisms that live in marine sediments — called meiofauna — is a useful way to document the threats of chemical contaminants on species survival. Meiofauna form the basis of fish and invertebrate food webs in estuaries and have a role in processing nutrients and chemicals in sediments. According to Chandler, ecotoxicologist at the University of South Carolina Arnold School of Public Health, “Many of the chemical contaminants entering southeastern estuaries come from sources such as roads, parking lots, turf grasses, outboard motors, and faulty septic systems. Fortunately, these chemicals typically do not reach levels that outright kill organisms, but they often do reach levels that can cause neurological, genetic, and reproductive dysfunction, and ultimately compromise the resource.”

Rural Revolution
A small school takes big strides with technology
By Danny Shaw Danny Shaw is principal of Aiken Elementary School in Aiken, S.C. Nestled near the gateway to South Carolina's sandy Atlantic flatlands, Aiken Elementary isn't in the kind of community where you'd expect to find a technology revolution. Much of the community is rural, and poverty is a stark reality for many of our children. More than a third of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches.
Yet educators come from all over the country to see what we're doing here. We are showing that technology can have a demonstrable effect on achievement in a school where 37 percent of the students are minorities. Redbook magazine recently named our school one of the 142 best elementary schools in the country, and the best one in South Carolina; and Aiken Elementary has been recognized as a national school of excellence by the U.S. Department of Education.
But if I credited our success entirely to technology, I would be giving technology far more credit than it deserves. We have a 97 percent attendance rate among our teaching staff, and our teachers are the ones who make the connections between learning and technology work on a daily basis.
What I can safely say, though, is I believe the technology we've incorporated into school life has been one of the major reasons for our success. I believe it's a big reason our average scores on reading, math, science, and language tests are well above district and state averages.

The energy was high as each classroom was filled with enthusiastic teachers learning new skills. While one group learned the intricacies of 3D modeling, another practiced building Web pages. The iApps class explored the fascinating applications included with OS X. Educators concluded their course with a personal DVD project that combined all their newly acquired skills. The Desktop Movie students roamed the grounds shooting video and practicing camera techniques, returning to their work stations to edit the video using the many dynamic features of Final Cut Pro.

Two of the students each will receive $50,000 college scholarships. All others will get $1,000 scholarships. The two top winners will be announced at a Free Spirit ceremony at the National Press Club on March 24.
The scholarship winners will be brought here to receive their awards and participate in a journalism conference which culminates with attendance at the Al Neuharth Free Spirit of the Year Award ceremony. At the event, students will have the opportunity to meet the 2003 Al Neuharth Free Spirit of the Year, Greg Mortenson, a Montana humanitarian who has dedicated his life to establishing schools in Central Asia.
The program, funded by the Freedom Forum, began in 1999 to honor Neuharth, founder of the Freedom Forum and USA TODAY. The scholarships and conference program are designed to assist students who are pursuing journalism careers and to inspire them through conference sessions with prominent media professionals. The Close Up Foundation assists the Freedom Forum in administering the program.
"We want to encourage these young people to become free-spirited journalists who dream, dare and do," Neuharth said.

During the five week project, we sang spirituals and told stories to make the time go by. At the end, we made a story of about 8 to 10 of the squares to lead southern slaves to the North or Canada to freedom. The girls learned about the value of quilts in the underground railroad, worked on their leadership badges and had a lot of relaxing time. It was a great project and I hope to repeat it next year.
