The Family Nutrition Programs of the South Carolina Department of Social Services all have one special goal making it possible for every single South Carolinian to have adequate, nourishing food every single day.
We have a wide range of nutrition programs that reach thousands of families who need some assistance making ends meet. We often work through schools, churches, daycare centers, recreation centers, and other agencies to provide meals and snacks.
Some of our programs are listed below. To learn whether your family qualifies to receive assistance, or whether your organization could be a provider, click on the name of the program. The Summer Food Service Program
Many children depend on meals at school for the nutrition they need to learn and grow. Their need for good food doesn't end when school gets out. The Summer Food Service Program meets this need by offering free meals and snacks to kids in low-income areas during the months they're on vacation. The Afterschool Snack Program
It is a long time between lunchtime at school and suppertime. The

The Epidemic
  • 61% of South Carolina adults are overweight or obese. (CDC BRFSS, 2004) 21% of non-Hispanic white adults and 36% of non-Hispanic black adults in South Carolina are obese. (CDC BRFSS, 2004) 26% of low-income children between 2 and 5 years of age in South Carolina are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. (CDC PedNSS, 2003)

South Carolina in Action
In 2004, the Division of Obesity Prevention and Control helped create the South Carolina Coalition for Obesity Prevention Efforts (SCCOPE), which was tasked with developing a state plan to address obesity prevention and control. These groups represent business and industry, community (access to healthy foods and physical activity), faith-based settings, health care systems, and schools. Activities focus on increasing physical activity, increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables, increasing breastfeeding rates, increasing the proportion of people at a healthy weight, decreasing screening time, reducing the burden of obesity-related chronic diseases; and increasing research on obesity. Among other goals, SCCOPE aims to:
  • Establish a state-based obesity surveillance system.

While the Office of Curriculum and Standards facilitates the revision of the curriculum standards in health and safety, the Office of Adult and Community Education provides statewide leadership and services to schools and districts in this area. South Carolina Healthy Schools (SCHS) is an initiative that focuses on improving children’s and adolescent’s well being by working with the school environment to encourage positive healthful behaviors. Healthy Schools promotes a multi-component model that involves schools and communities working together to improve health and physical education, social and emotional health, nutrition and health services, staff wellness, and a healthy and safe environment. This model, based on research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) , attempts to address the most serious risk behaviors that effect South Carolina youth. South Carolina Healthy Schools is an effort to promote school/community collaboration around local child and adolescent issues to positively impact all dimensions of health, academic performance, and asset development.                    Publications and Documents Place Publications and documents here Contact Lynn Hammond, Education Associate

Extension works with livestock producers to help them improve efficiency of production and increase total farm income. It is important to focus on food quality, animal welfare and being good stewards of the environment. Extension helps producers to focus on product evaluation, assists with performance testing, records and management, improving marketing, control of parasites, and using proper management skills and techniques. Information is distributed through a number of techniques such as newsletters, production meetings, workshops and individual farm visits. Extension assists producers in forming producer organizations and serves in an advisory capacity to many agencies and organizations. BEEF CATTLE INFORMATION DATABASE

Following the creation and expansion of the domestic food assistance programs in the second half of the 20th century, severe hunger, which had been a significant national problem, has become rare. The food assistance programs were developed in several steps. Concerns about the nutritional status of young men drafted for service in World War II led to the enactment of the National School Lunch Act in 1946. The Food Stamp Program was established on a pilot basis in the early 1960s, and extended nationwide in the early 1970s
