The American Civil War: Military Academies
Figure 1.This drawing shows a Virginia Military (VMI) cadet during the Civil War. Stonewall Jackson taught there, but was not a popular teacher. After the war began Jackson and most of the existing cadets left and new boys arrived. It became increasingly difficult, however, to maintain uniform standards. This drawing appeared in "The Century Magazine". Several military academies existed in the United States when the Civil War broke out in 1961. The most famous was the U.S. Military Academy at West Point which many of the major Fedeal and Confederate best known officers attended as wll as Confederate President Jefferson Davis. There were several other less known academies, some of which were for younger boys.

Star of the West as it tried to reinforce Fort Sumter with mem and supplies. This was the first hostilities which were lead to the Civil war. The Citadel cadets on January 28, 1861, was incorporated into the state military forces and was known as The Battalion of State Cadets. The Arsenal and The Citadel continued to operate as military academies in the early phase of the War. Classes were often disrupted, however, when the governor called the cadets up for military service. They mannied heavy guns, performed guard duty, and escorted prisoners . The Citadel on February 18, 1865, ceased operating as a military academy when Federal troops entered Charleston and occupied the site. The Arsenal was burned by Sherman’s troops when they entered Colombia and never reopened. The Citadel in Charleston would not be opened again as a milirary for decades.

The Hawthorne School of Aeronautics was a civilian flying school which was chosen by the Army Air Corps in 1940 to provide primary flight training for its pilots. This training commenced in 1941, using the Boeing PT-17 Stearman biplane. The date of construction of Hawthorne's airfield is unknown. No indication has been found that it existed prior to WW2 - it evidently was built by the Hawthorne School of Aeronautics at the beginning of their contract.
The Hawthorne airfield was not yet depicted at all on the November 1941 Savannah Sectional Chart (according to Chris Kennedy) The earliest depiction of the airfield which has been located was on the September 1942 14M Regional Aeronautical Chart (courtesy of Chris Kennedy) It depicted Hawthorne as a military airfield.

October 19, 2004 Dear SCYCA Staff: I just wanted to let you all know that I am doing fine. I have enclosed a copy of my first quarterly report card. I'm aiming for all A's next quarter.
Thanks to everyone who helped me during twenty two weeks of an "Educational Experience".
I think about Camp Long every morning I wake up. Sometime I even miss being there. At school a lot of difficult situations occur, but I think back to what Sergeant Solomon always told me. He said, "problems will come up, but it's how you deal with them that matters most. I have goals now. I am on a journey to prove to myself first and foremost and to those that told me that I can't, that I can. I am going to be somebody one day that others will look up to. I had to take a step back to run forward. I refuse to let the SYCA staff or myself down.

Dispatches from South Carolina
Same As It Ever Was
By Kevin Alexander Gray
O n July 2, 1776, the "anti-slavery clause" was removed from the Declaration of Independence at the insistence of Edward Rutledge, delegate from South Carolina. Rutledge threatened that South Carolina would fight for King George against her sister colonies. He asserted that he had "the ardent support of proslavery elements in North Carolina and Georgia as well as of certain northern merchants reluctant to condemn a shipping trade largely in their own bloodstained hands." Fearful of postponing the American Revolution, opponents of slavery, who were in the clear majority, made a "compromise." Thus, July 4, 1776, marks for African Americans not Independence Day but the moment when their ancestors' enslavement became fixed by law as well as custom in the new nation. If only anti-slavery foes had said "no compromise!" to South Carolina and rejected slavery and white privilege, the United States would have begun as a principled nation instead of a hypocritical one. Maybe then, today's South Carolinians would not be at the point of violence about a flag and what to do with it.

The public school system of today is not fully equipped to handle troubled teenagers. Often times, parents turn to military schools as an option to discipline and educate their troubled teenagers. Military schools , which seemed headed for extinction in the late 1960s and early '70s, have seen enrollments increase steadily in recent years. Many military schools are jammed to capacity and sport long waiting lists, as anxious parents scramble for slots. This website will give more information about military schools as an option for troubled teens as well as other alternatives for troubled teens. There is also history of military schools and general information about military schools. Alabama AL Alaska AK ... Visit Our Directory Resources: Home Site Directory Military School Options.
