The Porter Military Academy site reflects several eras of Charleston historyfrom major events in the city's settlement, to Civil War and Reconstruction, and more recently important 19th and 20th century educational institutions. As early as the 1700s, the site was used as a potter's field or pauper's graveyard. In 1825, the Federal government acquired the land for a new United States Arsenal, which was partially built sometime thereafter, and greatly enlarged in the 1840s. The Confederate army strategically seized the Arsenal at the outbreak of the Civil War, as it contained valuable arms able to supply three military divisions. Federal troops took over the Arsenal in 1865 and remained there during Reconstruction until 1879, when it was leased to Reverend Anthony Toomer Porter, a prominent educator and clergyman.

The Citadel votes to admit women
June 28, 1996
Web posted at: 10:15 p.m. EDT (0215 GMT) From CNN affiliate WCIV CHARLESTON, South Carolina (CNN) The Citadel fought tooth and nail to keep one woman from enrolling as a cadet in its all-male military academy in 1993. Friday, however, it abruptly ended its opposition to enrolling qualified female cadets. The school's governing board voted unanimously to drop the 153- year-old school's requirement that all cadets be men. The move puts the academy in line with the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled Thursday that the all-male enrollment policy at the Virginia Military Institute, another state-supported school, was unconstitutional. "Effective immediately, The Citadel will enthusiastically accept qualified female applicants into the corps of cadets," said Jimmy Jones, board president, during a news conference. Senior Chance Wilson was the only cadet to hear the school's announcement in person he just happened to walk by during the press conference. He is crushed by the news. "I'm hurt. I mean, this is a school that I love, and to see it changed so drastically, it hurts," he said.
Search for identity
Wilson said young men come to The Citadel to find out who they really are. "You can't do that anymore, there's no place left to go for that," he said. "VMI and The Citadel were the only places left."

by Craig M. Keeney O ne evening, I was approached by a group of young American Scouts who asked me to guide them to the top of a mountain overlooking Edinburgh. I told them I was also an American and was unfamiliar with the area, but in view of my Southern accent, I failed to convince them. Realizing this, I volunteered to guide them and proceeded to take them to the top of the mountain which, of course, I had never visited before. When I was successful, they pointed out that my knowledge of the route reaffirmed their conviction that I was a Scotsman. W. C. Westmoreland
Letter dated June 5, 1974 Perhaps most noted for the role he played in the Vietnam War, General William Childs Westmoreland exhibited at a young age the strength of character that would one day deem him his generation's most renowned warrior. In a 1974 letter, Westmoreland reminisced about his involvement with the Boy Scouts of America and a trip he took at the age of fifteen to the World Boy Scout Jamboree in Europe. Peers looked to him for leadership and guidance from an early age. Caricaturist Jack Rosen visited Vietnam in 1966 where he created this image of Westmoreland. In January 1974, Rosen sent Westmoreland the original drawing.
