South Carolina K-12 Technology Initiative Executive Summary The 1996/97 Appropriations Act committed $20,000,000 and authorized the SC State Budget and Control Board's Office of Information Resources (OIR), in partnership with the State Department of Education (SDE), South Carolina Educational Television (SCETV), and the private sector to begin the first year of a four year project to improve the use of technology in the state's public schools and libraries. To continue the project in 1997-98, the legislature provided a total of $28,366,516 in funding. These agencies, along with BellSouth and the independent telephone companies, formed the School Technology Coordinating Committee, a public/private sector partnership to oversee the development and implementation of this project. A major component of the schools and libraries project was begun by the committee along with the South Carolina State Library. This component was to provide Wide Area Network (WAN) connectivity for the state's 1,136 public schools, 86 districts and 189 public libraries. This WAN connectivity allows the schools and libraries to be a part of the South Carolina Information Network (SCINET). SCINET is a statewide network that connects South Carolina with the rest of the world. As of March, 1998, 96% of the schools and 88% of the libraries currently have dedicated connections or have ordered them. By July, 1998, it is expected that initial installations for all schools and libraries will be completed.

When you find an opportunity that appears to match your project goals, be sure to follow the links to the funder's site for more information.
Remember, it is critical that your project matches the funder's guidelines. You will waste both your time and the grant-maker's if you submit a proposal that does not match the grantor's funding initiatives. The SchoolGrants focus is primarily schools within the United States. There are, however, often opportunities available that extend to our Canadian neighbors. Most of such opportunities are found on the Nationwide Opportunities pages.
If you know of opportunities that are not listed on the SchoolGrants site, we would appreciate you letting me know about them! It is the SchoolGrants goal to provide as many opportunities as possible to benefit our Nation's children and their schools. This is only possible with your help and assistance.

Technology and Textbooks
A combination of an online course registration system and bar-coding of textbooks has resulted in more accurate predictions of textbook needs for middle and high school students.
An online course registration system was piloted last spring in at least one grade level at all 14 high schools and at one grade level at five middle schools. The success of the Student Registration System (SRS) allowed school staff to predict class numbers earlier than in previous years, and in turn, resulted in more accurate predictions of textbook needs for each course.
Ensuring that all students have all the textbooks they need on the first day of school is a priority for Greenville County Schools. An automated process including the bar-coding of all textbooks at middle and high schools was completed over the summer.
When school started, textbook managers used Follett’s Destiny Textbook Manager System to check out textbooks to students. The new automation system allows staff to locate extra textbooks instantly, and to move the books to locations that may have shortages due to increased enrollment.

District Six was the first in south carolina to have all schools accredited bythe southern Association of Colleges and schools.
http://www.spartanburg6.k12.sc.us/
School District Six Mission Statement S partanburg School District Six, where children are always first, ensures the highest quality education for all children by providing a highly qualified staff, a challenging curriculum, first class facilities and a nurturing environment. Basic Philosophy Since the future of our country is dependent upon the education of our youth, provision must be made for their education, not merely in terms of books, credits, and diplomas, but also in terms of living and preparation for the future. Education for citizenship in a democracy must hold a foremost place in the programs of all schools. Every child should experience a broad and balanced education which will prepare him/her to assume the full responsibility of American citizenship and at the same time give ample opportunity for personal growth and social usefulness. The Educational Climate of School District Six Spartanburg County School District Six is one of seven districts within Spartanburg County. Its composition embraces urban, suburban, and rural areas with a population of approximately 53,000 people. The area served by District Six schools is predominantly residential, although the District has experienced industrial and commercial development in recent years. This growth has continued to accelerate, causing the area to become one of the fastest growing areas in the county. Efficient local and county government contributes to the proper setting for educational effort and progress.
