FUNDING FOR HOUSING AT SC STATE ORANGEBURG, S.C. SEPTEMBER 9, 2004 — The Budget and Control Board during a special called meeting, gave unanimous approval for South Carolina State University to secure funding through the U.S. Department of Education’s Commerce Capital Access Program. This program authorizes the Department to make loans to creditworthy historically black colleges and universities for capital projects related to instruction, research, or housing of students, faculty or staff. As a state agency, South Carolina State University was required to receive approval from the five-member Budget and Control Board before accessing the federally backed loan program. The $36.2 million that SCSU will receive, will be used to construct an apartment-style resident hall that will house up to 750 students. Earlier in the week, University officials presented the audit and financial statement to Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom, and today he praised SCSU for, “a job well done.”
