Working as a Geographer
Geographers are trained to understand the complexity of interrelationships between people and the environment. They bring a vital geographic perspective to a surprising number of societal issues and problems, including, for example, urban planning, transportation, land use, water management, coastal erosion, market research, floodplain management, etc. Moreover, geographers continue to be trained in the making of maps, leading the way in the development of geographic information systems (GIS) that store, display, analyze, and map information using computer hardware and software systems. The advantage that geography enjoys over the other social sciences is this coupling of technical skills and a traditional liberal arts perspective. Several different emphases, each with associated employment opportunities, exist within the field. Regional geographers emphasize the study of major regions of the world such as Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Some regional geographers become area specialists who can find work with the State Department or the Central Intelligence Agency. Others may become a representative of a firm specializing in international business. Regional geographers are important in the travel industry. Recent studies indicate that travel and tourism is the second largest sector in the U. S. economy, second only to wholesale and retail trade. Between 1985 and 1995, travel and tourism has created 343,000 new jobs each year in the United States.

Geography Geographic Center of the U.S.
Source: U.S. Geological Survey, Dept. of the Interior There is no generally accepted definition of geographic center and no uniform method for determining it. Following the U.S. Geological Survey, the geographic center of an area is defined here as the center of gravity of the surface, or that point on which the surface would balance if it were a plane of uniform thickness. All localities in the following list, therefore, are approximate. No marked or monumented point has been established by any government agency as the geographic center of either the 50 states, the conterminous U.S., or the North American continent. A monument was erected in Lebanon, KS, the conterminous U.S. center, by a group of citizens. A cairn in Rugby, ND, marks the center of the North American continent. Carolina has a history of being a popular spot for visitors. It was considered a paradise by many groups of Native Americans. Shortly after that famous voyage of Columbus, both the French and the Spaniards were becoming regular visitors. One of the earliest known post-Viking settlements in North America was around 1526 at Winyah Bay (near Georgetown). It wasn't until a half century later that the English established their first colony (at Roanoke Island). Carolina was a land grant by King Charles (the First) to Robert Heath, one of his court favorites. It is said that King George (the First) liked Carolina so much that he bought it back in 1721 and then, nine years later, split it into two colonies (thus we now have North Carolina and South Carolina) Our War of Independence (Revolutionary War) really started in the 1760s in South Carolina (do we hear some arguments?) The real fighting, of course, started in Massachusetts but some of the most significant battles of that war were fought in Carolina. Of course there were other wars before and after the
