Beaufort South Carolina Geography
Beaufort County has 587 square miles of islands, 64 large- and medium-sized islands and some 2,000 smaller ones that were formed over thousands of years. These islands, the product of waves, currents and storms, are in a constant state of slow change.
Fresh waters from inland rivers meet the ocean here to form an estuarine network of tidal creeks and marshes so rich in nourishment that wildlife, birds and fish of incredible variety come here to feed and breed. St. Helena Sound to the north has four channels, but otherwise is a vast, shallow delta of ever-changing sandy shoals. To the south, the water is deep. The Broad River flows into Port Royal Sound, which lies between St. Helena and Parris Island on the Beaufort side and Hilton Head Island on the far side. Port Royal Sound is the second deepest natural port on the Eastern seaboard. It was the arrival of the Union Navy into Port Royal Sound that caused the citizens of Beaufort to flee the city in 1861, after which it became a Union medical center.
Among the areas covered in the term "South of Broad" are Hilton Head, Bluffton, Daufuskie, Callawassie, Okatie and Sun City, which straddles Beaufort and Jasper counties. "North of Broad" includes Beaufort and Port Royal, St. Helena, Lady's Harbor, Fripp, Hunting, Cat, Cane, Distant, Lost, Dataw and Polowana Islands, Sheldon and parts of Yemassee.

FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA Geography and regional characteristics
The French anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss has written of the "mental click" he feels when arriving in the United States: an adjustment to the enormous landscapes and skylines. The so-called lower 48 states (all but Alaska and Hawaii) sprawl across 4,500 kilometers and four time zones. A car trip from coast to coast typically takes a minimum of five days and that's with almost no stops to look around. It is not unusual for the gap between the warmest and coldest high temperatures on a given day in the United States to reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit (about 40 degrees Celsius). The United States owes much of its national character and its wealth to its good fortune in having such a large and varied landmass to inhabit and cultivate. Yet the country still exhibits marks of regional identity, and one way Americans cope with the size of their country is to think of themselves as linked geographically by certain traits, such as New England self-reliance, southern hospitality, midwestern wholesomeness, western mellowness. This chapter examines American geography, history, and customs through the filters of six main regions:

Beaufort County, SC.
South Carolina's Lowcountry is the unique coastline that stretches from Savannah, Georgia to just north of Charleston, South Carolina. Here, a network of fresh water rivers meets the marshes and the sea, creating a vital ecosystem system that nourishes much of Atlantic Ocean, as well as wildlife in the maritime forests and savannahs.
In the heart of the Lowcountry is Beaufort County, best known for the towns of Beaufort, Bluffton and Hilton Head. The county encompasses literally hundreds of islands and miles of waterfront, and has become a premier destination for those seeking unspoiled coastal real estate and a relaxed way of life.
Beaufort County is easily accessible by car, air and water. The region is serviced by eight Interstate-95 exits, and is a day's drive or less from most cities in the eastern United States. Savannah/Hilton Head Airport is 20-60 minutes away. Amtrak has a daily stop. And the Intracoastal Water highway winds through the islands, intersecting deep water channels that lead to dozens of communities, private docks and the Atlantic ocean.
