The Deep South
United States Geography The region of southern culture - the Deep South - can be viewed as a geographic composite of beliefs, attitudes, patterns, habits, and institutions. Many of the early patterns and current changes are explicitly geographic; many others have geographic consequences. Strong differences exist within the South. The Gulf Coast, the southern highlands, the Georgia-Carolinas Piedmont, and many portions of the northern interior South each possess their own versions of southern culture. But they are also clear about the "southern-ness" they share. THE HERITAGE The earliest European colonization in America was commercial and exploitative. And the coastal plain south of Delaware Bay, especially that south of Chesapeake Bay, contained many areas that appeared ideal for agricultural exploitation. The long, hot summers, regular rainfall, and mild winters permitted settlers a selection of crops complementary to those grown in northern Europe. The large number of rivers that crossed the plain, navigable by small boats at least, allowed settlement to expand freely between the James River in Virginia and the Altamaha River in Georgia. Population densities remained low throughout most of the region, with urban concentrations larger than the village size limited to port cities (Norfolk, Virginia; Wilmington, North Carolina; Charleston, South Carolina; Savannah, Georgia) or the heads of navigation on the main rivers (Richmond, Virginia, and, later, Columbia, South Carolina, and Augusta, Georgia). The strong rural and agrarian elements of southern culture established a pattern that remained significant until after the mid-20th century.

In antebellum days it was in some ways a remarkably cosmopolitan city, with flourishing French speaking and Jewish communities, and the first theater in the United States. Charleston was also the cultural and commercial center of South Carolina, a state perhaps more attached to the institution of slavery, and in 1860 more determined to break with the union, than any other state. Charleston was the summer gathering place of all the large plantation owners of coastal South Carolina; where they came to escape the deadly "miasmic air" (in reality, malaria mosquitoes were the main threat) of the swampy coastal plane. It was dominated by the views of such men. It alone, tried a showdown with the federal government, in 1832, when John C. Calhoun

Free Black Slaveowners in South Carolina
D omestic slavery was quite common in West Africa , although the Europeans organized the trade to a much greater magnitude and value. Free black slaveowners resided in states as north as New York and as far south as Florida, extending westward into Kentucky, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Missouri. According to the federal census of 1830, free blacks owned more than 10,000 slaves in Louisiana, Maryland, South Carolina, and Virginia The majority of black slaveowners lived in Louisiana and planted sugar cane . The majority of black masters had not been slaves themselves. Yet, the ranks of black slave masters were diverse: some acquired slaves as soon as they had accumulated enough capital after their own freedom, others received slaves with their own freedom from their white masters, and others had been free for several generations. Free black masters used slaves to work their farms as skilled and unskilled workers in urban centers and as hired workers to other employers. Although some black masters, such as those in Louisiana, owned scores of slaves and large tracts of land, most were small slaveholders who owned one or two slaves. Many of these small slaveholders owned family members who could not be emancipated because state legislatures prohibited private manumission unless the freed slaves left the state. The South Carolina Act of 1806 required slaves who lived outside their master's household to have written permission from their masters to do so. The statute also made it illegal to rent lots, houses, or enclosures directly to slaves. Some scholars explain the large number of slaves living in black households in Charleston, for example, as the slaves being merely boarders. But the detailed tax and manuscript census records show that slave boarding can not account for the majority of recorded slaveholdings among free blacks in

Sea Islands . The coastal climate is humid subtropical, with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. In this area are found cypress swamps, moss-hung oaks, beautiful flowering gardens, antebellum plantations, and the historic seaports of Georgetown, Beaufort, and Charleston, the latter a major tourist attraction and one of the chief ports of entry in the Southeast. The fall line on the state's Atlantic-bound rivers separates the coastal Low Country from the rolling Piedmont plateau of the Up Country and runs generally parallel to the coast, passing through Columbia. Inland the climate is temperate, becoming progressively cooler as the elevation increases. In the extreme northwest are the Blue Ridge Mts.; they occupy only c.500 sq mi (1,290 sq km) in the state, with Sassafras Mt. (3,560 ft/1,085 m) the highest point. Rainfall is abundant and well distributed throughout South Carolina. The Pee Dee, Santee, Edisto, and Savannah river systems drain the state, flowing from the highlands to the sea, creating rapids and waterfalls. This abundant source of hydroelectric power is one of South Carolina's most important natural resources. Several nuclear plants operate in the state as well.

    Introduction
Print Preview of Section South Carolina , state in the southeastern United States, bordering the Atlantic Ocean. In colonial days, the state was part of a vast region that Charles I , king of England, granted to Sir Robert Heath in 1629. The region was named Carolana, a word derived from the Latin form of Charles, in reference to the monarch. His son, Charles II , changed the spelling of the region’s name to Carolina in 1663. During the 17th century the area now covered by the present state came to be called South Carolina and the area to the north became North Carolina. The two sections remained a single colony until the British divided it into two in 1729. Nevertheless, the two areas have continued to be referred to as the Carolinas. On May 23, 1788, South Carolina became the eighth state to ratify the Constitution of the United States.

    Guest Column by Ken Conrad
Dateline: 11/15/00 Recently, I became fascinated with the country of Brazil. After asking my friends what they knew about Brazil (and keep in mind they’re not geographers), I realized that for the most part we in the United States know very little about this beautiful country in the southern hemisphere. Moreover, when we think of Brazil, it is most often the capital, Brasilia, which comes to mind, or the city of Rio de Janeiro, the home of the world famous “Carnaval.” The reasons that I find Curitiba fascinating are many. First, it’s one of the oldest cities in the Americas, founded in 1653 by the Portuguese. (The founding papers are still on in display in Lisbon, Portugal in the Marinha e Ultramar archives.) The name, Curitiba, went through a series of changes from the original Guarani word, "kur'yt' yba" (The Guarani are one of the few indigenous tribes of Brazil). The word means pine nut and the current spelling became official in 1919. One of the things that I find enchanting about the metropolis of Curitiba is its similarity to so many cities in the United States. Curitiba is an ultra-modern city with a population approaching two million. It is not only modern, but it is a leader in many civic and industrial areas. For example, their transit system is a paradigm for the world. Recently the Mayor of Los Angeles, the honorable Richard Riordan, traveled to Curitiba for ideas on how to improve the antiquated transit system of L.A. Transportation in Curitiba is facilitated by “central hubs” within the city where the long buses, a regular 40 passenger bus with two connected coaches in tandem, pick up their passengers for the outlying areas of the city.
