All of the South Carolinians being honored participated in local programs designed to improve family literacy and parent education. "We have strong resources across South Carolina to help families," said State Superintendent of Education Inez Tenenbaum. "These programs help parents complete their education as well as improve their parenting skills. They also provide opportunities for young children to learn on their own and with their parents." "This conference highlights initiatives across our state and also encourages communities to develop comprehensive educational programs to address the entire family’s needs," Tenenbaum said. "It is important to offer strong early childhood education initiatives, but the most effective programs also provide opportunities for the adults to improve their own academic and parental skills. They also show parents how they and their children can learn together."
