Region 4 Children's Environmental Health Program established a partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture - Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES) through regional land grant universities to develop state capacity in children's environmental health. CSREES contacts are listed below. Through this partnership, EPA and CSREES have conducted educational activities to increase awareness of children's environmental health hazards faced by our children. Education and outreach material addressing health hazards (displays, newsletters, curriculums, videos, etc.) are being utilized and distributed in over 80% of the counties in the region. CSREES also provides compliance assistance for EPA's lead program in all eight states. Three states have partnered with their Schools of Pharmacy to address childhood asthma. The 1890 - Traditional Black Land Grant Institutions are now involved in the partnership, focusing their efforts on under-served audiences. NC State has partnered with the Cherokee Indian Reservation in North Carolina to develop materials specific for Native American audiences. A number of states are also developing materials for Latino audiences.

The Cooperative Extension's Efforts to Impact Child Care
January-December, 1997
A survey conducted by the National Network for Child Care
NNCC is reaching thousands of children and families through child care programs. As part of the effort by the National Extension Network to collect data about Extension's role in raising the quality of child care, a national survey was conducted.
Thirty-one states (60%) and two territories (Puerto Rico and Guam) responded with data. Indications are that across the nation, Cooperative Extension is reaching hundreds of thousands of individuals in an effort to build quality child care for America.
Of the 32 states responding, cumulative totals indicate that for calendar year 1997, Cooperative Extension reached over 134,500 child care providers. Of these, 8% were school-age child care providers, 23% were family child care providers caring for children in their homes, 16% were center-based child care providers and 1% were reached through community coalitions and child care councils. Fifty percent did not indicate a provider type.
With a local presence in over 3,000 cooperative extension centers in the nation, educational programs are generally delivered locally to child care providers. In order to meet the scheduling needs of providers, learning sessions often must be offered in the evenings or on weekends. During the reporting year, over 32,500 individual training sessions were reported. Of these, 1,456 were for school-age providers, 1,877 were conducted for family child care providers, and 2,337 were for center-based child care providers.

NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS) Dispatches Incident Meteorologists (IMETs) to Alaska Fires. As of 8:00 a.m. ADT on July 8, 2004, 2.1 million acres have burned in Alaska since June 13-14, when a record setting number of lightning strikes affected much of the interior of Alaska. There are currently 73 active fires, with a total of 1,682 personnel spread among 20 of those fires. Two NWS IMETs and one IMET trainee have been dispatched to Alaska. NWS IMETs assist in efforts to combat wildfires that rage annually across the Nation. IMETs are a small group of experienced fire weather forecasters (54 certified nationwide) who are sent to locations throughout the U.S. to support wildfire operations and help support the safety of the fire fighters. Another NWS IMET will likely be dispatched early next week. Weather conditions for the remainder of the week indicate dryer and warmer weather with a potential for new fire starts from lightning strikes later this week. HOMEPAGE (MY TOOLSHED)
    MY GARDEN THE OLD GARDENER
    Updated February 12, 2004
You are visitor A separate and distinct area of gardening is that of the Master Gardener - the voluntary arm of the Agricultural Extension Services. As a Past President and member of the Harris County Master Gardener Association (Houston, Texas), I am more familiar with the Texas Master Gardener program but Master Gardening is nationwide in scope and on this page I will be attempting to put it all together. I am often asked the question, "Who and what are 'Master Gardeners'"? The following comments, questions and answers are geared primarily to the Texas Master Gardener Program. However, with slight differences, they also apply to all 50 states since all now have "Master Gardener Programs". They also generally apply in the four Canadian provinces with the program except for the sponsorship of Cooperative Extension agencies. Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people. What really sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture. In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their cooperative Extension office to provide horticulture-related information to their communities.
