Unprovoked seizure and epilepsy in Washington Heights/Inwood, New York City: incidence, prevalence, and patterns of care
The objectives of this study include: 1) estimating the incidence of epilepsy in a racially and ethnically diverse population; 2) describing the distribution of incident cases by age, sex, race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status, as well as by the type and cause of the seizure; and 3) describing patterns of care in this community. Results of this study may be used by health care and public health professionals and policy makers to facilitate the development of interventions to reduce the occurrence of epilepsy and to improve patients' access to care. Prevalence of epilepsy in minority inner city populations
The objectives of this study are to describe: 1) the prevalence of epilepsy and other seizure disorders, 2) epilepsy risk factors and etiologies, 3) the distribution of seizure types and syndromes, and 4) patterns of epilepsy care in predominantly minority populations (Washington Heights and Central Harlem communities of New York City). State settles with New York City radio station over slapping 'contest'
Javascript disabled. Cannot display HTML ad. By: Associated Press Wire Reports ALBANY, N.Y. A New York City radio station that earlier mocked tsunami victims on the air has agreed to stop its "Smackfest" promotion, in which women slapped each other for prizes, the state attorney general announced Monday.
Spitzer investigated the case as a potential violation of state law on promotion of a combative sport.
Indianapolis-based Emmis Radio, a division of Emmis Communications, noted in a statement that the contestants were volunteers but said "it was not our finest hour, and New York City deserves better."
In April, the station was criticized for broadcasting "Tsunami Song," which mocked victims of December's flooding disaster in south Asia that killed tens of thousands. The producer who wrote the song was fired and other station employees were suspended.
Emmis Chairman Jeffrey Smulyan said then that the song was "morally indefensible," adding "the entire Emmis family is ashamed."

    1998 Renourishment Project
Through work dating back to 1992, MMS and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources identified sufficient sand offshore Myrtle Beach to support future public works projects. South Carolina is a popular vacation spot for tourists with over 8 billion dollars of the State's tourism revenue being generated along the coast. One of the major attractions is the State's wide and scenic beaches. These beaches also play an important role in protecting life and property from coastal storms. However, the health of the coastal beaches and dune system is in jeopardy. More than half of the State's 90 miles of developed beaches are seriously eroding, threatening both residential and commercial developments. In response to increasing coastal erosion problems, the South Carolina General Assembly passed the Beachfront Management Act (BMA) of 1988 (amended 1990) to "protect, preserve, restore, and enhance the beach/dune system ...." The BMA mandates the development of a comprehensive, long-range beach management plan for the State's coastline, as well as local beach management plans to meet the overall goals of the Act. One of the stated BMA policies is heavy restrictions on the use of hard erosion control devices, with soft technologies being the preferred alternative. The Act promotes carefully planned restoration as a means of beach preservation where economically feasible.
