South Carolina – A Unit Study This mini unit on SOUTH CAROLINA uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academics subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study SOUTH CAROLINA. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child’s needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about SOUTH CAROLINA and enjoyable for all who are participating. South Carolina’s State Flag Asked by the Revolutionary Council of Safety in the fall of 1775 to design a flag for the use of South Carolina troops, Col. William Moultrie chose a blue which matched the color of their uniforms and a crescent which reproduced the silver emblem worn on the front of their caps. The palmetto tree was added later to represent Moultrie's heroic defense of the palmetto-log fort on Sullivan's Island against the attack of the British fleet on June 28, 1776. Create a State “Infodesk”: Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect.

Party pill gets tryout in therapy
A nonprofit group in Sarasota funds medical research on methylene-dioxymethamphetamine, also known as ecstasy.
By JANET ZINK, Times Staff Writer Published May 9, 2005 If Rick Doblin had his way, ecstasy, an illegal drug popular at all-night dance parties, would be available soon at a physician's office near you. Doblin heads a nonprofit corporation in Sarasota that is funding the first U.S. government-approved medical research on the chemical methylenedioxymethamphetamine, also known as ecstasy. The study takes place in South Carolina in a private doctor's office where psychiatrist Michael Mithoefer gives the drug, manufactured by a chemist at Purdue University, to posttraumatic stress disorder patients. Already, eight people have been enrolled in a program that will eventually include 20. Researchers believe that ecstasy, which acts on the same brain chemicals as popular antidepressants, will make psychotherapy more productive for victims of violence whose emotional scars have not healed with other types of treatment.

South Carolina Wildlife (Note: The draft below was submitted to South Carolina Wildlife magazine; the article that actually appeared in print may have been edited.) INTRODUCTION We all enjoy outdoor living in different ways, so an article about how we use the out-of-doors in South Carolina would be like a composite biography for the millions of people who live or vacation in our state. Many residents and visitors enjoy fishing and hunting, but those pastimes are covered elsewhere in this issue of "Carolina All Outdoors." My task instead is to consider the multitude of other activitiesfrom backpacking to horseback riding to birdwatchingthat make the great outdoors in South Carolina a wonderful place to be. South Carolinians have different ways of savoring the state's outdoor legacy. They enjoy nature study, tent camping, canoe paddling, bicycling, and stargazing, and they're always on the lookout for new experiences. Many of their activities don't directly require internal combustion engines, so no matter where they go in the Palmetto State, they're bound to find enjoyable activities that get them outside to navigate under their own power. It's impossible within the scope of a single article like this one to describe all the ways that people sample outdoor life in South Carolina. Therefore, this essay and photos cover just a few things the state has to offer its residents and 'most anyone else who chooses to enjoy "Carolina All Outdoors." If it's not included here, perhaps your favorite outdoor diversion will appear in another issue of South Carolina Wildlife.
