BYE BYE BIRDIE: Kendall the Andean condor, which was hatched and raised at the National Aviary, will be released into the wild in Colombia, South America.
Click photo for larger image. This morning, he's leaving the North Side for the flight of his life. By tonight, he'll be in Colombia, South America. Within a month, the 2-year-old Andean condor that was hatched and raised at the National Aviary will display his nearly 10-foot wingspan and fly off into the wild. He's part of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association's Andean Condor Species Survival Program because his is an endangered species. Andean condors from zoos in Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio, are also being sent to Colombia. The young condor will be packed into the same kind of crate used to ship dogs. He will be loaded aboard a US Airways flight to Miami, and once there, put on another plane that will carry him to Colombia.

Red-Legged Seriemas South America's tropical rainforest and its spectacular plants and animals get so much attention that it's easy to forget that there are other South American habitats that boast equally interesting species. East of the Andes and south of the Amazon, for instance, are partly open, fairly dry habitats ranging from savanna-like grasslands to arid woodlands.
Long-legged maned wolves live here, as do capybara, the world's largest rodents, and giant anteaters with very long snouts. The Chaco, dry wooded lowland habitat in parts of Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina, is the only home of the Chacoan peccary. This large mammal, weighing between 65 and 90 pounds, was first identified by scientists in the 1970s. Two species of rheas, very large flightless birds resembling ostriches, also wander the open plains. Then there are seriemas, large predatory birds with long legs, necks, and tails. Two closely related species of seriema stalk parts of South America. The black-legged seriema (

What's New at The Zoo? Tropics of the Americas The tropical forest of the new world takes on a new life at night. The nocturnal realm is home to a enormous variety of spectacular and often times misunderstood animals, many of which are not often seen because they are hidden and camouflaged by landscape and darkness. The Mayan Observatory will allow guests to view many of these species such as bats, snakes, salamanders, scorpions, bird-eating tarantulas, geckos, frogs, and centipedes. Having explored the islands and caves, adventurers will then come upon a South American Marketplace. The wild populations of several South American animals have been harmed by the pet trade. This exhibit will display several of these animals and serve to educate zoo visitors about the danger of the pet trade. Animals on display will include green iguana, yellow footed tortoise, milk snakes, tetra, conures, angelfish, parrots, turtles and boa constrictors.

Pros
Diverse animal collection, spacious habitats for most inhabitants, species grouped geographically Cons Extremely hot in summer, limited shade along pathways. The Bottom Line While not one of the nation's largest zoo's, the zoo is an outstanding moderately-sized zoo with very humane enclosures for its inhabitants. Full Review In 1991 the Montgomery Zoo expanded from a tiny 8 acre facility with outdated small cages and cement slab enclosures to a superb facility with open-air naturalistic animal habitats spread over 64 acres. Instantly the zoo transitioned from a local menagerie to a respected zoological institution drawing visitors from throughout the region. Since that time new species have been aquired yearly with new and innovative enclosures opening regularly. One of the many strong points of the Montgomery Zoo is its arrangement of species by geographic divisions. Five continents are represented in the zoo's collection. The five five zoo regions are arranged around a central hub featuring a cafe with seating overlooking adjacent animal enclosures. The regions moving counterclockwise from the front entrance are South America, North America, Africa, Asia, and Australia.

But enter the realm of Wildlife World Zoo and you can. The Litchfield Park zoo has recently added more exotic creatures to its collection of more than 1,500 animals of 365 species. The zoo has received a few warthogs from the San Diego Zoo and a flock of 14 Caribbean flamingos from Sea World. The new animals add to the dynamics of the zoo. advertisement OAS_AD('BoxAd') "Spring is all about the renewal of life, with the trees budding out, the grass turning green and new baby animals," said Mickey Ollson, the zoo's director. Wildlife World Zoo has a 20-year history of bringing new animals to the Valley. It introduces new animals or exhibitions every year or two, Ollson said.

Zoo Announces List of Jury Members
Who Will Select $100,000 Award Winner
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Zoo today announced the list of jury members who will select the winner of the Indianapolis Prize. The Indianapolis Prize is an award to be given every other year to an individual who has made significant strides in animal conservation efforts. It represents the largest international monetary award given to an individual for animal conservation. More than 50 of the world’s preeminent animal conservationists have been nominated to be awarded the inaugural Indianapolis Prize. From North, Central and South America to Australia, Asia, Europe and numerous African countries, the nominees work with diverse animal species found in oceans, deserts, forests, swamps, mountains and beyond. Michael I. Crowther, Indianapolis Zoo president, said he believes the caliber of the applicants is a fitting complement to that of the Indianapolis Prize jury. “The collective conservation experience of our international jury members is remarkable,” said Crowther. “We’re honored to have them selecting the Indianapolis Prize winner – an individual who surely will represent the top in the field.”
