    South-American maned wolf arrives at the Novosibirsk zoo from Hungary
    A South American maned wolf has been delivered to the Novosibirsk zoo from Hungary.
    As director of the Novosibirsk zoo Rostislav Shilo has told RIA Novosti, the 18-month old female wolf has been delivered from one of the Hungarian zoos within the framework of the international programmes for the breeding of rare animals and animals on the verge of extinction.
    Despite the lengthy flight on board an aircraft, the young female wolf feels well. The wolf has been placed in a separate cage within the heated premises where it will go through the course of adaptation to new conditions.
    To create a couple, representatives of the Novosibirsk zoo have already agreed with their colleagues from the zoo in Frankfurt (Germany) on the receipt of a male South American maned wolf, which is expected to be delivered to the Novosibirsk zoo next spring.
    The Novosibirsk zoo has already built a spacious open-air cage for the future couple. The zoo's employees intend to breed this rare species of wolves, which because of their long legs look higher than ordinary wolves. If everything goes well, a part of the offspring will be transferred to other Russian zoos, Rostislav Shilo said. According to him, few zoos in Russia have these wolves, which have been included in the List of Endangered Species. This species has appeared in the Novosibirsk zoo for the first time.

Visitor Review Review by Matt Harmeling on 13 June 2005 Located in suburban Chicago, the Brookfield Zoo offers visitors a vast array of animals housed for the most part in spacious, naturalistic environments. It sits about 20 minutes from downtown Chicago and is accessible by expressway. People who have visited Chicago's other Zoo in Lincoln Park are missing a real gem by choosing to check out the closer option. The zoo itself is very large and difficult to see in one day for the casual patron. There is a great deal of space between exhibits, something that may try the patience of some zoogoers. On the other hand, walks between exhibits are filled with views of beautiful fountains, countless flower gardens, and even a large wooded park area on one side of the zoo. The zoos exhibits are on par with the best in the country. Most are geographically oriented and try to maintain a tight focus on a particular habitat.

    One key to the Felid TAG's success has been the AZA's association with the Ralston Purina Company, which six years ago developed a Big Cat Survival Fund. Portions of sales from cat food were provided to the AZA's Conservation Endowment Fund, and the Felid TAG assisted in identifying those projects most worthy of support. To date, more than $500,000 has been awarded through this process. Examples of projects include:
    • Sao Paulo Zoo International Felid Breeding and Conservation Project (the building of a state-of-the-art felid breeding compound in Brazil);
      Safety Assessment of Melengesterol Acetate Contraceptive Implants (a project that has made us aware of the need to develop alternative methods of reproduction control for generic wild felids);

    The Baird's Tapir is prehistorically related to the horse and the rhinoceros and can reach up to 600 pounds. Tapirs are forest dwellers where they browse on grasses and aquatic vegetation, mainly at night.
    Tapirs, for the most part, are solitary. They are excellent swimmers and will utilize water to cool off, rid themselves of parasites, and seek refuge when frightened.
    The female at the Brevard Zoo has had four babies as of 2002. The latest, Contessa, is a very important addition to the captive population. A high percentage of births of this species of tapir in captivity has been of the male gender.

    Humboldt penguins share their name with the chilly Humboldt Current, which flows north from Antarctica along the Pacific Coast of South America, where the birds live. Both birds and current are named after the 18th-century explorer Alexander von Humboldt.
    Black and White and Pink All Over
    Humboldts are medium-sized penguins, averaging 28 inches long and weighing about 9 pounds. You can recognize them by the black band of feathers across their chest. Females are slightly smaller than males, but otherwise look very similar. Humboldts have added another color to the plain black and white of other penguins: pink! They have splotchy pink patches on their face and feet, as well as the underside of their wings. Actually, the pink doesn't come from their feathers: it's the result of bare skin patches, an adaptation that helps keep the birds cool in a warmer climate (see Fun Facts Penguins' torpedo-shaped bodies are designed for moving efficiently through water. Humboldts can reach speeds of 30 miles per hour. They use their wings to help them swim, and their webbed feet to steer underwater. Their bones tend to be denser than those of flying birds, since the extra weight helps them dive to greater depths.

    Iwokrama Develops Model Partnership for Conservation with Jacksonville Zoo
    15 April 2004 Guyana has a rich history of wildlife research, conservation and management. In their heyday, the Guyana Zoo , Guyana Museum, and the Royal Agricultural and Commercial Society (now the Guyana Society Collection) were considered centres of excellence for wildlife research and management. From the 1800's Guyanese animals were collected for zoos in Europe and North America, and international conservationists and scientists, including Gerald Durrell and David Attenborough, brought attention to Guyana's wildlife through many books and films. However, during the 1970's Guyana disappeared off the radar screen of wildlife research, conservation and management. International interest in Guyana's wildlife has undergone a revival in the last ten years and organisations like Iwokrama and the Jacksonville Zoological Gardens are at the forefront of that revival. Guyana's forests are now recognized by Conservation International and the World Resources Institute as "frontier forests" and Guyana's wetlands are recognized as a WWF Global 200 Ecosystem . Stop Monkeying Around:
    Take a trip to the Beardsley Zoo!
    By Karen Forrest
    As we strolled through the tropical rain forest, we suddenly came face to face with black and gold howler monkeys. Saki monkeys appeared too, jumping over fallen tree trunks, stopping occasionally to peer at us, the upright Homosapiens staring back. To these inquisitive South American monkeys, we were animals in a zoo, too. The only thing separating us was a sheet of glass - and perhaps a few chromosomes. The Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport, Connecticut is home to endangered Siberian tigers, Spectacled bears, Canadian lynx, ocelots, bald eagles, wolves, alligators, bison, poison arrow frogs, and lots of other seldom seen animals. But the real focus at Connecticut's only zoo is the wide range of North and South American animals. So you can spot prairie dogs, antelope, llamas, porcupines, Tamworth pigs, barred owls, hedgehogs, parrots, all kinds of turtles and birds, turkeys, geese, and yes, the all-too-common white-tailed deer. The official name of the 52-acre property, established in 1920, is the Beardsley Zoological Gardens. In addition to the zoo, visitors can explore a Victorian greenhouse filled with cacti, orchids and dozens of other plants; butterfly and herb gardens, and native flora and fauna. More than 300 animals are on display, representing approximately 124 species. In 1992, the New World Tropics exhibit opened, featuring a rainforest filled with brilliantly-colored birds, reticent sloths, giant snakes, a broad-snouted caiman, tiny, iridescent-green and black poison dart frogs, Galapagos tortoises and those nosy monkeys.
