Santa Cruz, Bolivia - As America's 34 heads of state, the first ladies, and some 2,000 journalists prepare to convene here in early December for a Summit on Sustainable Development, the world looks at this South American nation and has the chance to rediscover it as one of the continent's best-kept adventure travel destination secrets. My chance came last month, during a business trip to Santa Cruz de la Sierra, a far cry from the wind-swept Andean landscapes with roaming llamas that most tourists picture in their heads when thinking of Bolivia. Ranging from Amazon forests to salt plains, river gorges and mountain ranges, Bolivia's varied geography encompasses a lot more than the Titicaca Lake. Sitting in a valley by the foot hills where the mighty Andes raise to form the backbone of South America, Santa Cruz is the doorway to the vast Eastern plains, and the capital of Bolivian tropics, a rapidly-growing town of immigrants which still holds on to its colonial flavor. It is also frontier land, a city at the edge of wilderness. Santa Cruz is connected by train to Argentina and Brazil, and its airport has direct flights to Miami - its altitude of 1,250 feet making it possible for foreign airline crews to avoid the altitude sickness they would encounter in La Paz - but the trees of the main plaza are filled with wild forest-dwelling sloths; the area serves a center for cocaine smuggling but it is also the country's first source of rice, cotton and soybeans; you will run into German businessmen, Japanese agriculturalists, Canadian Mennonites, foreign oil workers, campesinos from highland Bolivia and environmental activists; its buildings are among the most modern in the country, but downtown is a Colonial legacy where weeds grow on Spanish tile roofs and everybody takes two-and-a-half hour siestas at noon.

Guiding the ocelot's comeback
By Cindy Starr, Post staff reporter By any standard, Marissa and Azul are adorable. About ocelots Ocelots,
which range from southern Texas to Argentina, have bee n on the endangered species list since 1972. About 100 remain in the United States in the wild and another 100 live in U.S. zoos. An estimated 5,000 to 10,000 ocelots remain worldwide. A petition is pending for the establishment of a Species Survival Plan for ocel ots. The SSP program is a cooperative effort involving selected species and North American zoos. The eventual goal for some species in the SSP program is reintroduction into the wild. The ocelot is an ''umbrella species'': if the ocelot and its habitat are protec ted, many other lesser-known species also are protected. Ocelots are slow to reproduce, which makes population recovery difficult. Femal es typically produce one kitten a year. But 7-year-old Marissa and nearly 2-year-old Azul are more than cute. They are the most genetically valuable pair in North America, according to Dr. Bill Swanson, a veterinarian and head of the animal conservation division at the zoo's Center for Research of Endangered Wildlife. The ocelots, born in a Brazilian zoo to parents caught in the wild, have a genetic makeup that is representative of Brazil's endangered wild ocelot populations. Almost all of the other 100 ocelots in U.S. zoos are ''generic,'' which means their gene pool is not representative of subspecies living in the wild, Swanson said.

Rudi the orangutan is one of six orangutans at the Houston Zoo. Zoos are one of the best places for families to spend a day. Children, especially, are captivated by animals, particularly animals that are unusual to them. But zoos have a wonderful effect on adults, too. Texas' biggest cities are home to some of the best zoos in the U.S. But there are also some great zoos in a few Texas cities where you wouldn't necessarily expect to find them. Here is our rundown of the best zoos in Texas: Fort Worth Zoo
The Fort Worth Zoo houses 435 species of animals, including 35 endangered species. It is the only zoo in the U.S. to house representatives of all four Great Ape species — gorillas, orangutans, bonobos and chimpanzees; and the only zoo in Texas with pygmy chimps. This zoo has one of the largest reptile collections in the U.S., and is also one of only five zoos in the world to display three of the five rhino species in captivity: black, white and one-horned Asian rhinos. Info: (817) 759-7555. Dallas Zoo
The Dallas Zoo's nearly 100 acres, in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas, are home to around 8,000 animals. It's the oldest zoo in Texas, founded in 1888. The park's six habitats can be toured by monorail via the Monorail Safari, a one-mile tour lasting about 25 minutes. The Dallas Zoo is a participant in the national Species Survival Plans for 37 species, including gorillas, tigers, chimps, lemurs, okapis and Bali mynahs. Info: (214) 670-5656.

Breeding and Conserving Endangered Canids Meeting the Challenge of Preserving Endangered Species
The National Zoo's Wild Canid Project focuses on studying the biology of wild canids to improve reproductive success and to maintain self-sustaining zoo and wild populations. Diverse and Increasingly Rare From the two-pound fennec fox that survives the rigors of Arabian deserts to the 175-pound timber wolf that ranges throughout the wild reaches of the Northern Hemisphere, canids (dog-like mammals) are a diverse and wide-ranging family of mammals. Yet these charismatic cousins of our oldest and most faithful companion, the domestic dog, are rapidly disappearing. Nine of 19 species in the world are listed as "threatened" or "endangered," and several are near extinction due to habitat loss, illegal hunting, and disease. Yet, compared to other carnivores (wild cats and bears), canids receive less public and conservation attention. And amazingly, the reproductive biology of wild canids (the essence of their survival) continues to be a mystery.

Big Cat Rescue and Pat Quillen, in cooperation with range countries around the globe, have launched an exciting in situ conservation effort called S.A.F.E. Saving Animals From Extinction In The Wild "When the last individuals of a race of living things breathes no more, another heaven and another earth must pass before such a one can be again." William Beebe, American Naturalist 1872-1962 Cats in the wild need your help! Big Cat Rescue has launched a global campaign to save all of the 37 existing species of cats in their native lands. We are working with Pat Quillen, of S.O.S. Care, to establish effective programs around the world. She has more than 30 years experience with exotic cats and has made connections all around the world with the people necessary to insure that these cats will be SAFE In The Wild. Every dollar collected will go directly to these in situ projects to benefit the cats and to secure their place in nature. We are beginning with the cats of Central and South America and will be adding species from around the world as the contacts are established. The cats in in this first phase are the Jaguar, Puma, Tigrina, Margay, Jaguarundi, Geoffroy Cat, Ocelot and
