MARTA MORENO VEGA Email Archives Print Reprint July 13, 2005 THE racist image of Memin Pinguín, as pictured on the govern-by Mexico, highlights the continued racism and discrimination that persists in the lives of Afro-Latinos in the Americas. The Mexican government unveiled the stamps last week and alluded to them as a celebration of the 1940s cartoon character Memin Pinguín, a young black boy with large lips and eyes. The image is minstrel-like, and the Mexican government’s laissez-faireattitude is indicative of the ever-present racism against dark-skinned Latinos in the country. But racism against Afro-Latinos does not end in Mexico — the problem exists in all of the Americas. The 250 million Afro-Latinos in Latin America are virtually invisible because our governments and media negate our existence.

Search About China China at a glance Chinese history Constitution Chinese leadership ... Opinion UPDATED: 16:37, December 15, 2004 The Int'l situation, diplomatic work for the people: Interview Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing
  • The international situation as a whole remains stable, but uncertain and unstable factors are on the increase.
  • Under the leadership of central authorities, in China's diplomatic work guided by Deng Xiaoping Theory and the important thought of "three represents", we, centered closely around the fundamental task of serving the endeavor to build a relatively prosperous society in an all-round way, have been working hard to implement the spirit of the Fourth Plenum of the 16th CPC Central Committee and the 10th Conference of Diplomatic Envoys stationed abroad, and have been striving for a peaceful and stable international environment and surrounding environment, an equality and mutually beneficial cooperation environment and an objective and friendly public opinion environment.
  • "Exercising government power in the interests of the people", and "doing diplomatic work for the people" are the purposes of our diplomatic work. We always keep the interests of the people at heart and try every possible means to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens and legal persons abroad.
