Your browser does not support javascript Peopling of South America Volume 49 Number 4, July/August 1996 A cave in the Amazon River basin near the town of Monte Alegre in northern Brazil has yielded evidence that people migrating from North to South America some 11,000 years ago did not settle exclusively in the Andes as previously believed. The new thinking suggests either that Paleoindians branched east into the tropics or that a separate migration of people was involved. Anna C. Roosevelt, of Chicago's Field Museum and the University of Illinois at Chicago, excavated Caverna da Pedra Pintada (Cave of the Painted Rock), discovering stone spear points, other tools, and charred plant and animal remains from the lowest levels of the cave, carbon dated and thermoluminescense dated to ca. 11,000 years ago. These finds indicate that the cave's earliest visitors foraged for plant foods and hunted small game common to tropical areas. The most widely accepted theory of the peopling of South America suggests that over a period of 3,000 years Paleoindians left Asia, crossed the Bering Strait on a land bridge that has since been submerged, then migrated through what is now the western United States and Central America into South America, settling along the Andes. Paleoindians in the Andes and those in North America had similar cultures, known as the Clovis tradition. These early hunters lived in open, temperate lands where they hunted large game with stone-pointed spears. The humid tropical forest environment of the Amazon was thought to have been too harsh for early people, and until now this area had not been investigated intensively by archaeologists.

    HIKE THE INKA TRAIL
Under the great emperors Pachacuti Inka Yupanqui and his son, Topa Inka Yupanqui, the Inka controlled almost one third of South America. Ruled from the capital city of Cuzco, these Quechua speaking people created a road system that extended 12,000 miles, through what is now central Chile northward into Ecuador. This intricate system was the crucial transportation link within the empire and was larger than that of the Romans. With its carefully constructed stone staircases and tunnels, it was designed for efficient foot travel, and today reflects the great precision of the ancient engineers. Join Far Horizons on a 14-day journey that includes a four-day trek through the towering mountains along the road connecting the royal capital of Cuzco with the hidden city of Machu Picchu. In 1981, the Peruvian government acknowledged the road’s uniqueness by including it within a huge national park, the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary. Along with only eleven others, and a Peruvian specialist, trek through the lush forest and deep canyons, across three monumental mountain passes, and through tunnels carved out of the living rock. And while enjoying the breathtaking scenery along the trail, stop to explore several extraordinary archaeological complexes with still-standing stone houses, intricate irrigation canals, and still flowing, ritual fountains.

    Paleoamerican Origins
Recent discoveries in New World archaeology along with new scientific methods for analyzing data have led to new ideas regarding the origin of the first peoples of the Americas and their time of arrival. The traditional theory held that the first Americans crossed the land bridge from Siberia to Alaska around 11,500 years ago and followed an "ice-free corridor" between two large Canadian ice sheets (the Laurentide and Cordilleran) to reach unglaciated lands to the south. These first inhabitants, whose archaeological sites are scattered across North and South America, were called the Clovis people, named after the town in New Mexico where their fluted spear points used for hunting mammoth were first found in 1932. If the Clovis people were not here first, then who was? Clovis points are found in many sites in North and Central America with a significant early cluster in the southeastern United States. Points similar to Clovis but without fluting and dating more than 12,000 years ago have been found in stratified archaeological sites in the eastern United States, such the Cactus Hill, Virginia. These finds have occurred because archaeologists are no longer halting their digging at the bottom of the Clovis level. So far scientists have found no technological affinities to relate Clovis to the Asian Paleolithic. However, Europe may have possible lithic precursors to Clovis. The Solutrean culture of western Europe, dating between 24,000 and 16,500 years ago, shows a similar lithic technology to that used to produce Clovis tools. The two cultures also share bone-shaping techniques, pebble-decorating artistry, the unusual tradition of burying stone tools in caches filled with red ocher, and other traits.
