History of Scouting in South Africa
Mafeking - the beginnings
The history of Scouting in South Africa goes back before the birth of the Scout Movement, because it was during the Siege of Mafeking in 1899-1900 that the founder, Robert Baden-Powell, had the first ideas which led to Scouting. Mafikeng (as it is now spelled) is a small town in the Northwest Province of South Africa. There are many other `African Seeds' in the early history of Scouting, and many African traditions which have become part of the traditions of Scouting. You can read more about them on the African Seeds of Scouting
The growth of Scouting in South Africa
South Africa after the Anglo-Boer War was a British colony, and in the cities many boys and young men must have read Baden-Powell's writing about "Boy Scouting" as it arrived in the mail by sea from Britain. In March 1908, only 7 months after the Scout Movement began with B-P's camp at Brownsea Island, many Troops sprang up in Cape Town and further afield in Johannesburg and Natal. It is not clear who was the very first, and there are many claimants, but the earliest registrations with the Imperial HQ in London came for several Groups in July 1909. Scouting grew rapidly in South Africa, and in 1912, B-P himself visited Scouts in South Africa. Contingents of Scouts from South Africa have attended World Jamborees since the first one in 1920, and the first National Jamboree was held in 1936, with B-P again attending. Many troops still have photos and logs from these early days of Scouting - some even still race the wooden Trek Carts which were used before cars to take equipment to camp.

Issues in African History
Professor James Giblin, Department of History, The University of Iowa Like the art of all peoples, the art of Africans expresses values, attitudes, and thought which are the products of their past experience. For that reason, the study of their art provides a way of learning about their history. Through the study of African art we can study the questions which have long preoccupied historians of Africa. This essay written by a historian who studies the African past presents an introduction to these questions. Its purpose is to encourage students to use their knowledge of African art to think about issues in African history. As students of African art begin to consider the African past, they must also consider how Western conceptions of "race" and "racial" difference have influenced our notions of the African past. These ideas, which have usually contrasted the presumed inferiority of black peoples with the superiority of whites, arose in Western societies as Europeans sought to justify their enslavement of Africans and the subsequent colonization of Africa. Historians now recognize that ideas of racial inferiority have inspired the belief that in the past African peoples lived in a state of primitive barbarism. At the same time, they have realized that many of the European writings which they use to reconstruct the African past such as accounts by nineteenth-century missionaries and travelers, for example are themselves tainted by these same notions of African inferiority.

On that April day, Jan van Riebeeck arrived with 3 ships and a company of 90 men, women and children. In 1657 nine of these settlers established a settlement in the Liesbeeck Valley. They grew crops to supply the Cape and the many passing ships. As shipping traffic increased around the Cape, these farmers needed more labour to replenish the passing ships. Jan van Riebeeck brought in slaves from places such as Java, Madagascar and Angola to work on the farms. The Cape Coloured people started emerging due to mixed marriages between Europeans, Asians and the indigenous peoples. The Dutch, through the Dutch East India Company, governed the expanding Cape Colony from 1652 to 1795. During this period many European settlers arrived, including the French Huguenot refugees (about 200, mostly young and married) in 1688.

HISTORY OF COTTON IN SOUTH AFRICA
In 1516, according to historical documents a certain Barbosa met natives in South Africa who grew cotton and wore cotton clothing. This was a type of wild cotton, species of which still exist today. The first cotton seed was planted in 1690 in the Western Cape, more or less 40 years after the arrival of Jan van Riebeeck. Cotton, however, prefers a warm climate and requires a substantial amount of moisture for the seed to germinate. In 1846 a certain Dr Adams brought seed from America and started growing cotton in the Amanzimtoti district in Natal. Between 1860 and 1870 cotton was planted on a relatively large scale in both Natal and the Cape Colony due to the demand for this fibre which had arisen as a result of the American Civil War. After 1870 the large scale production of cotton in South Africa came to a virtual standstill and was only to be continued at the start of the twentieth century. In 1904 about 12 to 14 hectares were planted in the Tzaneen area and in 1905 a cotton gin was erected in the area where cotton could be ginned and baled mechanically. In 1913 an experimental station which was to provide farmers with advice was established at Rustenburg under the direction of a Mr. Taylor. Between 1913 and 1922 cotton was cultivated mainly in the Transvaal Lowveld and the Eastern Transvaal.

GENERAL BACKGROUND
Since the installation of a democratic government following the end of apartheid in 1994, South Africa has worked toward bringing economic equality to historically disadvantaged (non-white) groups. Despite major institutional transformations of the judicial, educational, health, housing and governance sectors, however, income disparity continues to rank amongst the highest in the world. According to Global Insight, South Africa maintains membership in the African Union (AU), the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) , and the Southern Africa Customs Union (SACU) COAL
Production
In July 2003, Anglo American and Sasol announced plans to develop the Kriel South coalfield, from which each is expected to produce 5.5 mmst annually. Anglo will establish an operation on the northern portion of the field, and Sasol plans to expand its existing underground operations at the Syferfontein colliery in its southern portion. Anglo Coal will invest $96 million and Sasol $40 million in the project, which is expected to commence in 2005. In October 2004, Kumba Resources revealed plans to invest $52 million to build two additional coal mines, Grootegeluk and Leeuwpan, to be completed by July 2006.
