    AIDS in Africa
    Susan Hunter
Who Cares? is one of the most absorbing books I have read in years. [Susan Hunter] has done a fantastic job in weaving in Darwin (he comes alive and talks to you!), the history of exploitation in Africa, the vignettes of real life in Uganda, the broad sweeps of history of diseases. I could hardly put it down till it was done! Congratulations and I hope more people get to read the book.' - Gopalan Balagopal, UNICEF, New York SUSAN HUNTER is an independent consultant who has worked at the highest policy level with world health organizations (UNAIDS, UNICEF, USAID) in Africa over the last 20 years. She continues to travel frequently in Africa and South East Asia as part of her work on the pandemic, and lives with her husband in upstate New York, USA. Paperback

Neo-liberalism and AIDS Crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa
    Globalization's Pandemic
    Colleen O'Manique
O'Manique critically examines the evolution of the policy response to AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa through a feminist political economy lens, focusing on the relationship between neo-liberalism, the spread of AIDS and the hegemonic policy response. It explores the ways in which AIDS has been constructed as a 'development' problem and how AIDS knowledges and institutions have evolved and have shaped interventions in the AIDS sector. Central to the analysis is a historical case-study of Uganda.

June 8, 2001 For almost 40 years, they stood half naked under glaring lights in a museum of fossils, whale skeletons, and stuffed animal specimens. The exhibit on southern Africa's first human inhabitants, the "Bushmen," was testimony to the long-held belief that blacks were subhuman, no more advanced that the antelope in the next room. The removal last April of the controversial "Bushman diorama" from the South Africa Museum in Cape Town signals the transformation of this nation's museums in the seven years since the end of apartheid. Once shrines to white achievements and superiority, museums increasingly reflect the ideals of this diverse and newly democratic nation. These new exhibits are giving South Africans their first uncensored look at themselves, and in the process, rewriting this nation's history. Naude's museum traded whitewashed apartheid-era exhibits on southern Africa's first European settlers for displays on the tragic experience of a black community through colonization and white rule. Another exhibit challenges South Africans to take a fresh look at the ancient rock art found throughout the region. It draws comparisons between rock paintings made by Bushmen (also known as San people) thousands of years ago and Leonardo DaVinci's "Last Supper."

Mapungubwe History of Africa denied For Centuries the rich History of South Africa dating back about 2000 years was hidden from its people. Mapungubwe was home to an advanced culture of people. The civilization thrived as a sophisticated trading center from around 1200 to 1300 AD. It was the center of the largest kingdom in the sub-continent, where a highly sophisticated people traded gold and ivory with China, India and Egypt. The fact that Bantu speaking peoples of the region had a highly civilized existence hundreds of years before the first Europeans arrived was too much for any settler to bear .. The San people and Hoodia Gordonii In 2002 the Hoodia Gordonii case reversed a worldwide history of exploitation of indigenous peoples. The San tribe could easily have been victims of biopiracy. The particularly disconcerting aspect of this case is that it was a governmental organisation, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. The CSIR is an institution that was shaped by the apartheid regime it had served well for 40 years.

    Background:
Often called 'the rainbow nation', South Africa is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in Africa. It was inhabited by pastoral Khoekhoe (Khoi), the hunter-gatherer San, the Xhosa, and the Zulu nations and various other indigenous tribes, when Dutch settlers arrived in middle of the 17th century, much to the disadvantage of the Khoekhoe along the southern and western coastal strips.
What followed was an agressive colonial expansion for centuries mainly of settlers of Dutch, German and French Huguenot origin. In 1795 the British took over the Cape from the Dutch, seven years later the colony was returned to the Dutch government, only to come under British rule again in 1806, this circumstance and the rise to power of the Zulu king Shaka, forcing many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers) to trek north and east to found their own republics.

    Description
Table of Contents About the Editors "At a strategic time in South Africa's history, the Christian history which is absolutely basic to all developments, is presented in a comprehensive and objective way. Too little attention is given to the influence of religion in socio-political accounts. This is a creative and much-needed contribution to scholarship and general knowledge. . . . An outstanding work."Dean S. Gilliland, Fuller Theological Seminary DESCRIPTION (back to top) Christianity, the faith of almost three-quarters of the diverse South African population, has long been pushed to the margins of historical writing on South Africa, yet for more than two centuries it has shaped South African society and its diverse subcultures. This tightly constructed and vigorously written booka collaboration of thirty specialists working in seven countriessituates Christianity for the first time in the broad political, social, and economic context of South African history; it also traces a variety of religious movements and their histories both before and during apartheid.

    South Africa - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman As one of Africa's most economically important countries, South Africa and its history have been marked by hundreds of years of power struggles between European settlers and native peoples. In its 500 years of modern history, South Africa has seen the arrival of Dutch settlers, an occupation and rule of British settlers, fierce battles between native Zulu tribes and the settlers and, most recently, social and political struggles between South Africa's white and black populations.
Archaeology shows that humans have occupied South Africa since at least two million years ago, when South African natives painted images of prehistoric life on cave walls. The prehistoric paintings there are regarded among historians and archeologists as some of the finest examples of prehistoric art.
South Africa's location at the southern tip of the African continent made it an important point for European traders sailing back and forth to India. Bartholomew Diaz, a Portuguese explorer, was the first European to set foot on South African soil when he landed at Mossel Bay in 1488. He was followed by other European explorers, including the famed Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama.

You are instantly transported back in time and spontaneously overwhelmed with emotion. For those whose collective cultural memory is embedded in the permanent exhibition, the museum is pregnant with nostalgia. And complete with mannequins in Stetson hats, the gumba-gumba record player and the inescapable bar atmosphere, the shebeen comes alive. Such exhibits, laying bare, as they do, the heart and soul of inner city Johannesburg, make a trip to the museum a worthwhile experience. However, the museum has also put together special displays to showcase specifically to visitors across the globe, tourists and delegates to the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

    ABOUT THE MUSEUM
The South African National Museum of Military History, situated in Johannesburg in the Province of Gauteng, is the only museum of its kind in South Africa. It provides a nucleus of Museum and military history expertise in southern Africa.
During the First World War (1914 - 1918) many of the belligerent nations went to great lengths to collect and preserve the role of their soldiers during that conflict. At the conclusion of the war, Britain established by statute the Imperial War Museum as a memorial to the effort and sacrifice made by the men and women of the Empire during the war. South Africa had played a role during that war on the side of the Allies. However, the state neglected to preserve a record of this role in the form of a museum and, unfortunately, much of the material heritage relating to this period was dispersed.
This failure was recognized because in 1940, shortly after South Africa's entry in to the Second World War (1939 - 1945) Capt J Agar-Hamilton was appointed official historian of the Union Defence Forces. Capt Agar-Hamilton then formed an Historical Research Committee to ensure the preservation of documents and materials of military interest, therefore laying the foundation for the eventual establishment of a museum. The state also took the decision to create an official war art programme and, throughout the war, seven official war artists were appointed to the battlefronts where South Africans served. Together they produced a collection of around 850 works of art which also serve as an important source of reference to the country's role in the war.
