In the eighth century Bantu speaking people from East Africa arrived in South Africa. In 1652 the Dutch East India trading company set up a provision base and began to settle. In 1814 the area was assigned to British rule. The rules and regulations that came with British rule caused a majority of Boers (Dutch settlers) to migrate east to found their own republics, this was named the Great Task. The 1860's brought the first Indian laborers to work on the sugar plantations. The Union of South Africa was formed in 1910. In 1948 a system of apartheid was introduced. [edit this] [Upload image] People have inhabited Southern Africa for thousands of years. Members of the Khoisan language groups are the oldest surviving inhabitants of the land; however only a few are left in South Africa today and they are located in the western sections. Most of today's black South Africans belong to the Bantu language group which migrated south from central Africa settling in the Transvaal region sometime before AD 100. The Nguni ancestors of the Zulu and Xhosa occupied most of the eastern coast by 1500. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to reach the Cape of Good Hope arriving in 1488. However permanent white settlement did not begin until 1652 when the Dutch East India Company established a provisioning station on the Cape. In subsequent decades French Huguenot refugees the Dutch and Germans began to settle in the Cape. Collectively they form the Afrikaner segment of today's population. The establishment of these settlements had far-reaching social and political effects on the groups already settled in the area leading to upheaval in these societies and the subjugation of their people. By 1779 European settlements extended throughout the southern part of the Cape and east toward the Great Fish River. It was here that Dutch authorities and the Xhosa fought the first frontier war. The British gained control of the Cape of Good Hope at the end of the 18th century. Subsequent British settlement and rule marked the beginning of a long conflict between the Afrikaners and the English.

Nelson Mandela was inaugurated on the 10th of May 1994 as the first black African President of the New South Africa. F. W. de Klerk, whose National Party had gained 20 per cent of the votes, became second Vice-President of the Interim Government. The first Vice-President was Thabo Mbeki. He was elected as President in June 1999 when the ANC got almost a two third majority of the votes.

South Africa
Only months after taking up office, Frederik Willem de Klerk rang in the end of Apartheid in an historic speech in Parliament in February 1990, and declared himself in favour of a democratic South Africa. The ANC was unbanned. Some days later, Nelson Mandela, the President of the ANC, was released from prison on Robben Island, after 27 years behind bars. Earlier, in secret negotiations the ANC and the government had agreed to refrain from violence and work for a peaceful transition and a new constitution. The process of rapprochement was slow in the beginning, particularly because of differences and power struggles between the Xhosa-dominated ANC and the Zulu-led Inkatha Freedom Party, resulting in violence in the townships.
In the meantime, de Klerk had to deal with growing criticism from his own National Party. To counter that, he had his policy confirmed in a referendum voted on by the white population. Almost 70 per cent supported a continuation of the reforms.

A short history of South Africa Early days
If the history of South Africa is in large part one of increasing racial divisiveness, today it can also be seen as the story of - eventually - a journey through massive obstacles towards the creation, from tremendous diversity, of a single nation whose dream of unity and common purpose is now capable of realisation. The earliest representatives of that diversity - at least the earliest we can name - were the San and Khoekhoe peoples (otherwise known individually as the Bushmen and Hottentots or Khoikhoi; collectively called the Khoisan). Both were resident in the southern tip of the continent for thousands of years before its written history began with the arrival of European seafarers. And before that, modern human beings had lived here for more than 100 000 years - indeed, the country is an archaeological treasure chest. The hunter-gatherer San ranged widely over the area; the pastoral Khoekhoe lived in those comparatively well-watered areas, chiefly along the southern and western coastal strips, where adequate grazing was to be found. So it was with the latter that the early European settlers first came into contact - much to the disadvantage of the Khoekhoe.

The history of South Africa encompasses over three million years. The first inhabitants of the area known as South Africa were ape -like hominids , who migrated to South Africa around three million years ago. They were gradually replaced around a million years ago by homo erectus , who also spread across Africa and into Europe and Asia Homo erectus were replaced by homo sapiens around 100,000 years ago. The first homo sapiens formed the Bushman culture , whose members were skilled hunter-gatherers . Around 2,500 years ago, Bantu peoples migrated into South Africa from the Niger River Delta . The Bushmen and the Bantu lived mostly peacefully together, although since they had no method of writing , little is known of this period outside of archaeological artefacts The written history of South Africa begins with the arrival of the first European explorers to the region. While the Portuguese were the first Europeans to see South Africa, they did not choose to colonise it, and instead the

Zulu impression of first white men, taken from Zulu epic poem, Emperor Shaka the Great, translated by Mazisi Kunene, drawing on the memories of a number of Zulu oral historians.
In the early part of the 19th century the history of southern Africa is marked by the massive expansion of the Nguni empire under the military leadership of Shaka. This had a knock on effect throughout southern Africa displacing other peoples.
People in southern Africa also felt the economic and political impact of a minority of Europeans from the 17th century onwards. These Europeans set about taking over, and profiting from, other people's land.
Farming and mining were the principle activities from which white settlers profited, with the Dutch, or Afrikaners as they became known, mainly interested in agriculture.
The Englishman Cecil Rhodes led the initiative to exploit the country's mining potential. His long term goal was to colonise the whole continent with white settlers.
