WORLDGUIDE Introduction See Image Gallery Events Transport Money Essential Info RELATED Thorn Tree Forum Postcards Travel Links South Africa is an exhilarating, spectacular and complex country. With its post-apartheid identity still in the process of definition, there is undoubtedly an abundance of energy and sense of progress about the place. Travellers too are returning to a remarkable land that has been off the trail for way too long. The infrastructure is constantly improving, the climate is kind and there are few better places to see Africa's wildlife. But if you want to understand the country, you'll have to deal with the full spectrum. Poverty, the AIDS pandemic and violence remain a problem.

European Contact The Mineral Revolution Union and Opposition ... Birth of Democracy Ancient History European Contact Natal’s economy at this time was boosted by the development of sugar plantations in the subtropical coastal lowlands, a development for which large numbers of Indian indentured labourers were imported. The Mineral Revolution Union and Opposition The Rise of Apartheid After the Second World War, in 1948, the pro-Afrikaner National Party (NP), came to power with an ideology that was to become infamous: apartheid, an even more rigorous and authoritarian approach than the segregationist policies of previous governments. While white South Africa was cementing its power, black opposition politics was undergoing a sea change. In 1943, a younger, more determined political grouping came to the fore with the launch of the ANC Youth League, a development which was to foster the leader-ship of figures such as Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo and Walter Sisulu. Repression Defiance The Defiance Campaign of the early 1950s carried mass mobilization to new heights under the banner of non-violent resistance to the pass laws. In 1955, a Freedom Charter was drawn up at the Congress of the People in Soweto. The Charter enunciated the principles of the struggle, binding the movement to a culture of human rights and non-racialism. Matters came to a head at Sharpeville in March 1960 when 69 PAC anti-pass demonstrators were killed. A state of emergency was imposed, and detention without trial was introduced. The mass-based organizations including the ANC and the Pan-Africanist Congress (PAC) were banned.

    Government
Under the terms of the new constitution, which was adopted on 8 May 1996 and entered into force on 4 February 1997, legislative power is vested in a bicameral parliament, comprising a National Assembly and a National Council of Provinces (formerly the Senate). The National Assembly is elected by universal adult suffrage under a system of proportional representation and has between 350 and 400 members. The 90-member National Council of Provinces comprises six permanent delegates and four special delegates from each of the provincial legislatures. The president, who is elected by the National Assembly from among its members, exercises executive power in consultation with the other members of the cabinet.
Economy Recently, however, the traditional dominance of agriculture and mining has been supplanted by manufacturing and service industries. Manufacturing industry is concentrated in metal-based industries, mainly steel and heavy engineering, with machinery and transport equipment as the principal products. Manufacturing now accounts for around 20 per cent of total economic output. Some advanced technological industries have also emerged in recent years. In the service sector, both financial services and tourism have expanded rapidly and both are now mainstays of the South African economy.

A New Era in Surveying Technology The Meridian Arc of Abbe de Lacaille The pursuit of the figure of the earth has a long and interesting history in South Africa. The year marks the th anniversary since the prominent astronomer-geodesist Abbe de LaCaille who set foot on South African soil to catalogue the Southern stars by their celestial co-ordinates of right ascension and declination. Shortly after his arrival at the Cape, LaCaille set out to measure a meridian of arc in the southern hemisphere as no such measurement existed. Abbe de LaCaille measured a triangulation arc (figure one) northwards from Cape Town, to determine the figure of the earth and obtained a result which indicated that the curvature of the earth was less at southern latitudes than at corresponding northern ones. This perplexity was later to be verified by Sir Thomas Maclear , Her Majesty’s Astronomer at the Cape.

    South Africa's History:
The SAN are the indigenous people of South Africa. Archaeological sites in South Africa contain evidence of their settlement more than 100 000 years ago. They lived in small nuclear families. They expressed their beliefs and rituals, outlooks and activities in richly abundant rock art, and were only gradually displaced by agro-pastoralists called KHOIKHOI's, whose presence goes back hardly more than 2 000 years. KHOIKHOI's were misnamed Hottentots by Europeans. Gradually people from East Central Africa settled in the North region and developed their own complex community. In 1488, Bartolomeu became the first European to round what King John 2nd of Portugal later named the Cape of Good Hope. Although European seamen frequently passed by or stopped for provisions or rest in South Africa on their way to East Africa and India, no permanent European settlement was made until 1652. In 1652 Jan van Rienbeck and about 90 other Europeans set up a provisioning station for the Dutch East Indian Company (VOC) at Table Bay on the Cape of Good Hope. The VOC's need for labor was so urgent that within the first decade of settlement they brought in slaves from their eastern empire, and from regions on both sides of Africa. By 1662 about 250 Europeans lived by the Cape, and they gradually moved inland. The first European found city, Stellenbosch, was found in 1679. By 1707 there were about 1780 freeholders of European descent in South Africa and they owned about 1100 slaves.
