Aims

The aim of the South Africa tour was to introduce geographical educators to the contemporary geography of South Africa and encourage and enhance their teaching of geographical themes and issues in primary and secondary schools and colleges.
Leader
With his in-depth knowledge and insights gained from extensive research in the area, Dr Tony Binns planned an extensive itinerary, and was an informative and amusing group leader throughout.
Organisation
Tony organised and planned the Tour with his South African contacts, assisted by members of the International Committee. The Tour operator was Ian Dickson Travel of Edinburgh, who once again gave us excellent service beyond ‘the call of duty’.
Our operator, driver and guide in South Africa was Fiona Masterson of Lynx thru’ Africa from Grahamstown. Fiona caught the mood of the group very well. We were also grateful to Professor Etienne Nel (Rhodes University) whose advice and help was invaluable.
A reading list and papers were distributed before the tour.

Berkeley: University of California Press, 2002. April 2004 marked an important anniversary in South Africa's modern history. Ten years earlier, the country held its first democratic elections that signified a new postapartheid era. This anniversary provided an opportunity to reflect on social and economic progress in South Africa, as well as to raise critical questions about the delayed status of land reform, the relentless advance of HIV/AIDS, and the continuing economic disparities in this country. These conditions are reminders of the centuries of dispossession and discrimination under colonial and apartheid regimes. Disabling Globalization contributes to the growing literature on South Africa's transformation by critically examining the relationship among neoliberal economic policies, the land question, and restructuring of local government. It focuses on the multiple trajectories of sociospatial change as they play out at the local level. The discursive power of globalization, defined by Hart as the spatial interconnection associated with capitalist restructuring and the discourses through which knowledge is produced, provides the basis for shaping South Africa's future. Throughout the book, Hart examines what makes these discourses so disabling and the possibilities for more politically enabling alternatives.

The Department of Geography's Home Page Go to the General Information Page (Recommended after reading the following Preamble). Preamble: The University of Port Elizabeth is a relatively small institution with approximately 5000 students. Of these approximately 250 are enrolled for courses in the Department of Geography, in which the medium of instruction is English. The Department offers courses in the Arts, Science, Economic Sciences, Health Sciences and education faculties, at undergraduate level, and in the Arts and Economic Sciences faculties at postgraduate level (Go to the Course Page . In general, Geography classes are small, making staff-student contact more direct than is possible in many larger institutions. Consequently, through personal contact and discussion it is possible to overcome many problems in their initial stages. The city of Port Elizabeth and the Eastern Cape provide a varied and interesting environment for geographical teaching and research in both the physical and human sectors. Thus fieldwork in the immediate urban environment and further afield plays an important part in the Geography programme. Although the University of Port Elizabeth is only 30 years old it has the facilities offered by many older institutions and in some respects has more complete collections, notably in the library. The Department has its own computer terminals and access to the facilities of the University Computing Centre and the Geographical Information Systems laboratory

Mrs Glyn Armstrong holds up a series of posters showing an African political map, synoptic charts and a history of SA events. Rhodes's Geography Department purchased and distributed these posters to selected schools in the Eastern Cape. Geography teachers are pleased to add these posters to their limited teaching resources. An excellent initiative that not only encourages teachers, but also exposes the Geography Department to prospective students.

The island lies almost halfway between South America and Africa and, until its first international airport becomes operational in 2010, the only way to get there is on the last remaining Royal Mail Ship, the RMS St Helena , which departs from Cape Town, Walvis Bay and Ascension Island.

From Jamestown, you can take a taxi to Plantation House Broadway House near the base of the ladder and overlooks the harbour where ships from the East India Company anchored.

Despite its lack of size, the island boasts diverse landscapes, from wind-eroded multi-coloured ridges to tree-covered hillsides, soft meadows and vegetation-filled valleys. Those with a botanical bent should visit Sandy Bay , all serious hikes descend from the central ridge into valleys next to the sea. The paths are clearly marked but they are not for the fainthearted, as most have exposed sections where extreme caution is required. The views, though, are worth it and leaflets with detailed descriptions of what to look out for on each walk add great value.
