Geography
South Africa Table of Contents South Africa forms a distinct region, or subcontinent, divided from the rest of Africa by the rivers that mark its northern border. In the northwest, the Orange River cuts through the Namib Desert and divides South Africa from Namibia. In the east, the Limpopo River traverses large areas of arid grassland along the common border with Zimbabwe and southeastern Botswana. Between these two, the Molopo River winds through the southern basin of the Kalahari Desert, also dividing South Africa from Botswana. Populations have moved across these rivers almost continuously over the centuries, but, in general, the northern border region of South Africa is sparsely populated. The geological substratum of the subcontinent was formed at least 3.8 billion years ago, according to geologists, and most of the country's natural features evolved into their present form more than 200 million years ago. Especially since the early twentieth-century writings of Alfred Wegener, geologists have hypothesized that South Africa was once part of a large land mass, now known as Gondwana, or Gondwanaland, that slowly fractured along the African coastline millions of years ago. Theories of such a supercontinent are bolstered by geological continuities and mineral similarities between South Africa and South America, by fossil similarities between South Africa and the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar, and by the sharp escarpments, or geological fractures, that encircle most of southern Africa near the coast.

Dr Anthony Lemon
Tutor in Geography Research Interests: Anthony Lemon is a specialist in the social and political geography of South and southern Africa. His work has sought to demonstrate the spatial character of apartheid planning and its consequences for South Africa's social, economic and political geography, and for that of southern Africa as a whole. Since 1994 he has focused on aspects of post-apartheid reconstruction, including urban desegregation, redistribution within the school education system and electoral geography in relation to nation-building and political and economic stability in post-apartheid South Africa. Secondary research interests include small states and the foreign policy, trade and investment relations of South Africa in a changing global environment. He is currently planning a new book, co-edited with Professor C. M. Rogerson of the University of the Witwatersrand, on the economic geography of southern Africa. Recent publications: Books:

South Africa and Its Neighbors
Objectives
Review the geography of South Africa.
Outline the geographic features of the Atlantic countries of southern Africa.
Compare and contrast the countries of Zambia, Malawi, and Botswana.
Discuss the geography of the Indian Ocean countries of southern Africa.
Chapter Overview Chapter 21: South Africa and Its Neighbors The Republic of South Africa is located at the southern end of the African continent. It is the most developed country in Africa. South Africa is the world's largest producer and exporter of gold. There are also large deposits of other mineral resources. In 1994 South Africa held its first democratic elections in which people from all ethnic groups could vote. Angola and Namibia have long coastlines on the Atlantic Ocean. The Namib Desert runs along the coast of both countries. Most of Angola's people are farmers. The country's major export, however, is oil. Namibia has rich mineral deposits. Unfortunately, most of Namibia's people continue to live in poverty. The Zambezi River flows across the country of Zambia. Zambia also has large deposits of copper. Zimbabwe takes its name from an ancient African city and trading center: Great Zimbabwe. Botswana lies in the center of southern Africa. The Kalahari Desert spreads over the southwestern part of the country.

Tony Binns - current research and publications
Current Research Interests Community-based development and institution building in post-apartheid South Africa
This on-going project started in 1996, in collaboration with the Department of Geography at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa. Initial funding was from the Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa, but Tony was then awarded a Leverhulme Study Abroad Fellowship in 2000-2001 to develop this work further. The project is concerned with seeking to identify and monitor grassroots development initiatives which might lead to job creation and poverty alleviation. Consideration is being given to the possibility of replicating successful initiatives and identifying the most appropriate sources of possible external funding for such initiatives. Several papers have been published, three conferences held (Grahamstown - July 1999; Sussex - April 2000; Matjhabeng - July 2002) and a book is planned. Post-doctoral fellow, David Bek , and doctoral students, Peter Kyle and Alec Thornton , are working closely with this project. In July 2003, Tony was awarded a British Academy grant for research on:

Gerard Mercator, Jr. after Gerard Mercator. "Africa." From the Mercator-Hondius Atlas . Amsterdam: J. Hondius, 1609. 14 7/8 x 18 3/8. Engraving. Full original color. Full margins. Some marginal tears and staining, and a small oblong hole in center; all expertly conserved. Overall, very attractive appearance and very good condition. French text on verso.
Amsterdam: J. Blaeu, 1643-50. 16 x 21 3/4. Engraving. Superb original hand color. Very good condition. French text on verso. A wonderfully decorative map of Africa by Willem (Guilielmus) Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638), the progenitor of the famous Blaeu cartographic firm of Amsterdam. Blaeu studied astronomy and sciences with Tycho Brahe, and in 1599 established a globe and instrument making business which soon expanded to include cartographic and geographic publishing. This firm was to go on to become the largest and most important cartographic publishing firms in the world, run by his sons Cornelis (until his death in 1642) and Joan. The maps issued by the Blaeu firm are known for their fine craftsmanship and design, and have been called "the highest expression of Dutch cartographical art." This map is a premier example of the Blaeu output.

Teach and Learn: Geography
Title:  London to South Africa Learning Objective: Study of a LEDC and contrast with UK Age range: Over 11, KS3 School: Holloway, London Teacher: Richard Cohen Twinned with: St Cuthberts Senior Secondary School, Tsolo District, South Africa What you need: ICT network room The Idea: Students work through the materials (see South Africa example PDF ) at their own speed under the guidance of a teacher and where possible learning mentors or teaching assistants. Benefits: This activity is part of a wider unit of work for our Year 7 students in Geography in which they will learn about South Africa. We hope to encourage them through this project to get interested in the twinning with the school in South Africa and to start up the correspondence Issues: Need for computers on a network though students could also work through this as an independent, personal activity though they do need help from a teacher.
