Sore throat
Overview Treatment Definition:
A "sore" throat is discomfort, pain, or scratchiness in the throat. Often there is pain with swallowing as well.
Alternative Names: Throat - sore; Burning in the throat; Pain - throat
Considerations: Sore throats are common, especially in children between the ages of 5 and 10. For most children, removing the tonsils would not prevent future sore throats. Therefore, tonsillectomy surgery is performed less commonly than in the past.
Sore throats are most often caused by an infection. The vast majority are caused by viruses and will NOT respond to antibiotics. Strep throat is the most common bacterial cause of sore throat. Because strep throat can occasionally lead to rheumatic fever , antibiotics are given. Strep throat often includes a fever (greater than 101 degrees Fahrenheit), white draining patches on the throat, and swollen or tender

Sore Throat What is it?
A sore throat is an inflammation of the throat caused by either viruses or bacteria. How do you catch it?
The infection is spread by sharing drinks, kissing, sneezing, nose blowing, and by contaminated objects passed from hand to mouth. What are the symptoms?
Symptoms can include:
- painful, red throat
- difficulty swallowing
- swollen tonsils
- pus
- headache
- fever
- feeling "blah" - swollen lymph nodes ("glands") What can you do? Whether the sore throat is due to a virus or bacteria, the following will help to make you feel better: DRINK FLUIDS: Clear liquids are most soothing and help to thin out the mucus at the back of your throat. Cold sodas, popsicles and mild (not citric) juices are often preferred although some people find warmer liquids feel better. WARM SALT WATER GARGLES: These help to soothe and heal. Add 1/2 teaspoon of table salt to 1 cup of warm tap water and gargle with this solution at least four times a day.

Surprising fact:
Only about 15% of the people who go to a doctor with a bad sore throat have strep throat. You need a test to tell for sure. You only need antibiotics if your test shows you have strep throat.
What to do:
  • Drink more water. Honey and lemon in hot water or herbal teas are good, too.
  • Gargle with warm salt water.
  • Suck on a hard candy, vitamin C drop or throat lozenge.
  • Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen to relieve pain. Read the label for a child's dose.
Call your doctor if:
  • You have a hard time swallowing or breathing.
  • You get a sore throat after being exposed to strep throat.
  • You also have a fever over 101° or rash with a sore throat.
  • You cannot trace the cause to a cold, allergy, smoking, yelling or other irritation.

Remedy for a sore throat
Ease your sore throat during the dry, winter months with these home remedies.
During cold and flu season, sore throats can be a real annoyance. During the winter months, breathing through the mouth can cause drying and irritation in the throat. Taking care of a sore throat at home, however, is pretty simple and easy. You just have to know what to do. Sore throat viruses can’t be treated with antibiotics. They just have to run their course, like the common cold. If the sore throat is especially painful, use a pain reliever such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen (Tylenol). Cold liquids may also relieve the pain of a viral sore throat. Older children or adolescents may develop a viral sore throat called infectous mononucleosis or “mono.” If the sore throat lasts longer than a week, mononucleosis may be the reason. Along with the sore throat, the patient will feel much weaker and more tired than usual. Like other viral sore throats, there is no antibiotic cure of mononucleosis. The most common sore throat condition caused by bacteria is strep throat, caused by streptococcal bacteria. A strep throat should be treated with antibiotics because complications could occur if it remains untreated. Complications of strep throat include an absess in the throat (though this is extremely rare) and acute glomerulonephritis, which causes an inflammation in the kidneys.

Tonsillectomy for sore throats
Tonsillectomy is a common operation, with over 70,000 being carried out every year. The main reason for doing it is to prevent recurrent throat infection - either tonsillitis or pharyngitis. How well does tonsillectomy work?
Review
A systematic review [1] searched widely and obtained some unpublished information. The entry criteria were participants suffering from recurrent throat infections, the operation was tonsillectomy or adeno-tonsillectomy, and studies needed to be randomised.
Results
Five studies were found, two of which had strict entry criteria related to frequency of throat infections and defining features of a throat infection. The other three had less explicit criteria. No trial included children over 15 years. The main outcome was that of incidence of throat infection during two years of follow up. For all throat infections the results for years 1 and 2 are seen in the Figure. Over the two years, tonsillectomy meant avoiding 2.3 to 3.6 throat infections. Of these infections, perhaps 10-30% would be likely to be moderate or severe. More infections occurred in control groups in the first than in the second year. One study had a three year follow up, by which time the benefits of tonsillectomy had been lost. There was no statistical significance in school days lost between treated children and controls.

Although some of the symptoms may feel similar, a sore throat is not the same as a strep throat. Sore throat A sore throat (the medical name is pharyngitis) can be caused by a variety of things. Some of the culprits, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) include:
  • viruses, similar to those that cause colds (Read about " The Common Cold ")
  • irritants such as air pollution or smoking (Read about " Quit Smoking ")
  • allergies (Read about " Allergies ")
  • bacteria
  • post nasal drainage
Although most people consider a sore throat to be more of an irritating condition, a chronic sore thorat or a persistent cough can indicate an underlying medical problem. (Read about " Tonsils and Adenoids " " Vocal Problems: Laryngitis and Vocal Growths " " Head and Neck Cancers " " Occupational Respiratory Diseases ") Therefore, if a sore throat persists, you should see your doctor or healthcare specialist. Strep throat A strep throat is a particular kind of sore throat, caused by a specific bacteria called Streptococcus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) strep throat is more common in children than adults. It's not something to take lightly since serious complications can occur if it is not treated with antibiotics. (Read about "

    Sore Throat
While most parents are worried about strep throat when their child has a throat infection, their are also many viruses that cause infections that look very similar to strep. If your child has a sore throat with fever and a red, swollen throat or tonsils with white pus on them, then he should be seen by his physician so that he can be tested for strep throat. If the tests for strep are negative, then your child's throat infection is caused by a virus and antibiotics will not work. Viral infections of the throat usually improve in two to three days without treatment.
    • Strep throat : caused by the bacteria group A streptococci. It is most common in children over three years old and begins with a fever, a red, swollen throat and tonsils that can have a white coating of pus, swollen glands, decreased appetite and energy level. If strep throat is suspected as the cause of tonsillitis in your child, your doctor will do a throat swab to confirm that there is infection with strep bacteria. This infection is easily treated with antibiotics, usually penicillin. Your child will no longer be contagious after being on an antibiotic for twenty four hours. It is important to take a complete course of antibiotics to prevent your child from getting rheumatic fever.

    • Pain, discomfort or raw feeling of the throat, especially when swallowing.
Children less than 2 years of age usually don't know how to complain about a sore throat. A young child who refuses previously enjoyed foods or begins to cry during feedings may have a sore throat. Their symptoms are captured by the DRINKING FLUIDS, DECREASED guideline.
    Cause
    • Most sore throats are part of a cold. Of severe sore throats, about 20% are caused by the Strep bacteria. Only these need an antibiotic.
See More Appropriate Topic (instead of this one) If
    • Sore throat is mild and the main symptom is croup, hoarseness or a cough. (Note: these symptoms are rarely seen with Strep.) (See CROUP or COUGH) (To go directly to these topics, click on the links following this document.)
