Sore Throat
(Pharyngitis)
What causes a sore throat?
A sore throat can have many causes. Some of these are listed below:
  • Many common viruses, and even the viruses that cause mononucleosis (mono) and the flu, can cause a sore throat. Some of the viruses that cause a sore throat can produce blisters in the mouth and throat ("aphthous stomatitis"). Breathing through the mouth can produce throat dryness and soreness. Sinus drainage may cause a sore throat. A sore throat can also be caused by bacteria. The two most common bacteria to cause as sore throat are Streptococcus (which causes strep throat) and Arcanobacterium haemolyticum. Arcanobacterium causes sore throats mainly in young adults and is sometimes associated with a fine red rash A sore throat that lasts for more than 2 weeks can be a sign of a serious illness, such as throat

    3.12 Pharyngitis (Sore Throat)
    Presentation
The patient with a bacterial pharyngitis complains of a rapid onset of throat pain worsened by swallowing. There is usually a fever, pharyngeal erythema, and a purulent, patchy, yellow, gray or white exudate, tender cervical adenopathy, headache and absence of cough. Viral infections are typically accompanied by conjunctivitis, nasal congestion, hoarseness, cough, aphthous ulcers on the soft palate and myalgias. It is helpful to differentiate pain on swallowing (odynophagia) from difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), the latter being more likely caused by obstruction or abnormal muscular movement.
    What to do:
    • First examine the ears, nose, and mouth, which are, after all, connected to the pharynx, and often contain clues to the diagnosis.
    • Depress the tongue with a blade, have the patient raise his soft palate by saying " ah," inspect the posterior pharynx, and swab both tonsillar pillars for a culture. (You can decide later whether you really need to plant the culture. Rapid strep tests may provide results in a few minutes, while cultures may take 1-2 days to incubate and interpret. This delay does not alter the effectiveness of therapy, however. Treatment may begin up to nine days after symptoms and still prevent rheumatic fever.)
    • When the infection is not clearly bacterial or you are unsure about the need for an antibiotic (or you or the patient "need to know" if this is a strep infection) then you may obtain a rapid strep test. If the rapid strep test is positive, then treat with antibiotics as above. If the test is negative or unavailable and you have a high clinical suspicion that this is a viral pharyngitis, provide symptomatic treatment (below), send a culture, and hold antibiotics pending results.

Main June 03, 2005 Sore Throat There was a time when the exposure of Deep Throat's identity would have grabbed my attention in a big way: At last! The answer to all those boozy guessing games at all those journalistic watering holes of my younger days. Al Haig? John Dean? Martha Mitchell . . . no wait, wasn't she dead by then? But it doesn't really matter any more. Anonymous whistleblowers have become little more than curious anachronisms, as likely to turn out to be bumbling fools or cynical disinformation artists (paging Michael Isikoff) as dedicated civil servants wiling to risk their careers to save the Republic. The Republic is rather obviously beyond saving now even George Lucas understands that. Which is why the self-outing of Mark Felt had about as much relevance to our current slow motion coup d'état as a late-night cable rerun of All the President's Men It was, however, a very contemporary story in that it was clearly less about filling in the historical record and more about about cashing in on it. Felt and his family get a shot at a book/movie deal; the Washington Post gets to recall past glory (and use all that material it thought it would have to sit on until Deep Throat died) and various Watergate has-beens get to pontificate (or in Pat Buchanan's case

    Sore throat
    Definition
Sore throat, also called pharyngitis, is a painful inflammation of the mucous membranes lining the pharynx. It is a symptom of many conditions, but most often is associated with colds or influenza . Sore throat may be caused by either viral or bacterial infections or environmental conditions. Most sore throats heal without complications, but they should not be ignored because some develop into serious illnesses. Description
Almost everyone gets a sore throat at one time or another, although children in child care or grade school have them more often than adolescents and adults. Sore throats are most common during the winter months when upper respiratory infections (colds) are more frequent. Sore throats can be either acute or chronic. Acute sore throats are the more common. They appear suddenly and last from three to about seven days. A chronic sore throat lasts much longer and is a symptom of an unresolved underlying condition or disease, such as a sinus infection.
Sore throats have many different causes, and may or may not be accompanied by cold symptoms

Viruses are more common in children under a year. About 10% of sore throats are caused by the strep (streptococcus Group A) bacteria. This does need treatment with antibiotics because of rare complications of an untreated strep bacteria such as rheumatic fever (which can lead to heart damage) or post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis ( a kidney complication where blood and protein are detected in the urine and causes a "coca-cola" colored urine). Strep throat may occur at any age, but is most common in children over 4 or 5 years of age. It is contracted by person-to-person contact and the incubation is 2 to 5 days. Strep rarely causes nasal congestion and cough. Symptoms of strep throat may include the following: fever sore throat with red spots or white spots on the tonsils swollen tender neck glands headaches stomachaches, nausea or

Alternate Names : Burning in the Throat, Pain - Throat, Throat - Sore Definition A "sore" throat is discomfort, pain, or scratchiness in the throat. A sore throat often makes it painful to swallow.
Throat Anatomy Sore throats are common, especially in children. Most of the time the soreness is worse in the morning and improves as the day progresses. Like colds, the vast majority of sore throats are caused by common viral infections. (This means they will NOT respond to antibiotics.) Many people have a mild sore throat at the beginning of every cold. Sore throats can result from infections in the nose or sinuses, when drainage runs down the back of the throat, especially at night. Or, the throat itself can be infected.

    Self Care for Sore Throats
What causes a sore throat? Many things can cause sore throats. A sore throat that occurs with, or is followed by, other cold symptoms is usually due to a virus. Antibiotics have no effect against viruses. Another cause of a sore throat is strep throat , which is due to infection with streptococcal bacteria. It is more common in children ages 2 to 11, and is less common in older children and adults. Symptoms of strep throat include sore throat with two of these three symptoms:
    • white or yellow coating on the tonsils; swollen glands in the neck.
What can you do for a sore throat? Home care/treatment is usually all that is needed for viral sore throats. If you are taking antibiotics for strep throat, these tips will also help you feel better.
    • Gargle frequently with warm salt water (one teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water). If you have post-nasal drip, gargle frequently to prevent more throat irritation.
