The Singer/Songwriter - The Value Of Open Mics
Friday, October 22, 2004 Putting it bluntly, open mics ROCK!
An open mic session is a forum for performers to put their name down on a list and have the opportunity to play a few songs. You dont get paid as such but the exposure for the beginning singer/songwriter is invaluable.
Heres why.......
As a performing songwriter almost any opportunity to perform is a great opportunity however when you are starting out there seems to be a vicious 'catch-22' situation happening.
There are not many gigs for less experienced singer/songwriters but how can you get the experience unless you actually perform gigs
Hmmmmm...... This is where the open mics come into play.
Open mics are just that, an open performance forum, an opportunity to play and to get your songs out there.
These performance forums are not just for beginners either. From time to time I use these open mics to showcase my best stuff or to road-test brand new stuff to an audience that is

Dan Pelletier with Vickie Russell

We ended the 2003 Fall concert season with two of the best singer-songwriters we have ever heard. Dan Pelletier has written song lyrics that are chock full of insight and emotion, sung with a gritty, soulful voice, accompanied with his precise keyboard playing. Opener Vickie Russell presented songs from her new CD "Welcome Home" and also won our hearts with her lyrics, in turn tender and funny, and attractive stage presence. She was accompanied on bass and guitar by her husband and with her keyboard and guitar work, they created a complete band sound. Pelletier's passionate performance of his songs make him a rising star on the national folk scene. He is the winner of first prizes in the 2002 Plowshares Songwriting Contest, 2001 SFFF Songwriter Competition, the 2001 Rose Garden Songwriter Contest and the 2000 Mid-Atlantic Song Contest. Dan's festival appearances have included the Kerrville Folk Festival, South Florida Folk Festival, Cottonwood Festival, Summerfest, Clearwater Festival and the Greenwich Folk Festival. Dan's has produced two excellent, highly recommended CDs: "Mr. Sunshine" and "Wild Heart Rodeo". The later features his brilliant and moving poem "The Baddest of All" which Dan recited closing the first set at Winona Folk and winning extended and enthusiastic applause from the audience.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Spicer moved to Los Angeles a few years ago with the intention of becoming a film director. Although the visual medium inspired her, she disappeared after an Oscar nomination to try songwriting. Soon she was performing around town, as a solo artist on keyboard, or with a backing band. After two years of performing, The National Academy of Songwriters named her Female Artist of the Year. She currently tours solo at more acoustic venues (including the Bitter End in New York, Club Passim in Boston, McCabes in Santa Monica), but when she reunites with her LA- based band the more rocking, edgy layer comes out. Spicer has been a Mainstage Performer at the Kerrville Folk Festival; she's featured on the
