Songwriting Resources This article first appeared in the December 1998 issue of the Folk Federation's monthly newsletter, InFolkUs Along with around 35 other people, I was a participant in the Victor Harbor Songwriting Event this year. As many readers of InFolkus will know, the Songwriting Event is held as part of the Victor Harbor Folk Festival, and has been held in one form or another since the first State Folk Festival in 1979. In the lead up to the Event I have spent some time over the past couple of months exploring resources for songwriters on the internet, and have been surprised and delighted by many of the things I have found. As mentioned in last months column, our very own local SCALA ) has been online since 1995. In the archive of articles on the site you can find items discussing various aspects of songwriting including "How to write a song" by Bob Petchell; ideas for avoiding cliches and obvious rhymes, and an interesting look at the use of the ‘bridge’ in songwriting - both by Rob Childs. If you don’t know what a ‘bridge’ is when used in a song, then Robs article is a good starting point. The SCALA site has numerous other items of interest to songwriters and is a great place from which to start your research into the art of songwriting. The ISA, or the

Songwriting Guides Performing Songwriting Guides Performing Print Version Becoming a performer Performing your music in a professional way can be one of the most rewarding parts of being a songwriter. Audiences (and the music industry) are always impressed by performers who can handle the stage and the studio, and who get on with the job in a professional way. By professional we mean being prepared for a performance, and not being phased by sudden changes - the PA breaks down, a broken string or one of the musicians has got lost on the ring road (believe us, it happens!) Being prepared is crucial - this means everything is prepared - the songs, the instruments, the set, the line-up, even the banter. Some performing dos and dont's: Go on when they say you are going on The MC announces the next act. Then you say "hang on" and disappear to the toilet, or you are rummaging in the back of your guitar case for your lucky pick. No. Be ready to go on and, go on when they say your name. Tell them who you are If there is more than one act on the night, not everyone will have come to see you. The noise from the bar may have meant some people missed your name when it was announced. Make sure they know who you are. Tell them at the beginning, and tell them at the end.

Songwriting Guides Performing Songwriting Guides Performing Print Version Vocal training You may be perfectly happy with your vocal style, but the real importance of vocal training isn't so much to change the way you sing, but rather to safeguard your health. Your voice is like any other muscle in the body - it can get tired, it needs exercise and it needs rest, especially if you are making it do things it doesn't normally do. If you haven't done much singing before, it is a good idea to get some training so that you don't lose your voice when you need to perform, and don't do any long term damage due to repeated voice strain. In extreme cases the voice can develop lumps on the larynx called nodules - these take a long time to get rid of and can need surgery. However, this tends to happen to people who use their voice a lot, such as opera singers. Practise your diction.

Songwriting Tip - Try a Bridge
by Robert Childs
Beginning songwriters can sometimes make a song more interesting by adding a Bridge. The bridge can change the mood and direction of a song for a few bars before returning to the main melody line and theme. A well known example of a song with a bridge is The Beatles I Wanna Hold Your Hand . Notice how the bridge (beginning "And when I touch you I feel happy inside ....") briefly changes the mood of the song. Radio Crystal Blue interview with Jenn Lindsay Interview conducted via email August 2002 Q. Jenn, I first encountered your artistry through another fine antifolkster who also traveled many miles to NYC...Casey Holford. Are you two strictly songwriting/performing partners? Can we look forward to more collective works from you both?
A. Casey Holford and I haven't yet written anything together, but we've been able to apply our strengths to each others' music-his instrumental intuition adds a ton to songs of mine, "I Am Not Going Home Yet," "Red Shirt," and
"Sidewalk Song;" and I sing backup on two of his songs that will be released on his new album "Bad Spell, Good Spell." Overall Casey's idiosyncratic brand of songwriting has compelled me to push myself further as an iinstrumentalist and as a craftsperson of rich songs. But our writing styles are HUGELY disparate. That said, I do hope that we'll keep collaborating and performing together for years to come, because we have a rich creative
relationship. He's awesome.

When did you start producing records?
How did Martin hear about you?
Is your studio at home?
With respect to those artists you did decide to produce, what were you looking for in their demos? The songwriting. Under ideal circumstances, I look for an artist who has a really good sense of self. Hopefully they’re past the early stages of writing derivative works and are actually telling the truth or reflecting themselves in their work. To make a good record, people need to like the artist. It’s about more than what you put on the songs or whether they’re catchy or whatever. It’s really about whether there’s a sense of identity coming from the artist or whether they spill their guts enough so that people can relate to them. The deeper an artist digs, the more universal things get. So the message is: "Reach more people and you have a chance for a more successful record." Mary is an absolute songwriting student. We actually met in a songwriting seminar. She studies songwriting all the time and she listens to records and has all the lyrics to songs by artists such as Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Woody Guthrie. She really works hard on her lyrics and insists that they speak for her. She definitely has an identity of herself, and it comes out in her songs.

The Top Ten FAQs On The Business Of Songwriting: #9
By Mary Dawson
When I first began my journey as a songwriter, the word was a term that was made up of equal parts mystery, awe and paranoia is kinda like eggplant . Although the word sounds pretty scary, but when you actually try it...it ain't so bad after all! The definition of is very simple it is the exclusive right to copy fixed in a tangible form or medium such as written lyrics and/or transcribed notes on music paper and/or an audio recording. The key word here is fixed . As long as your song is simply floating around in your head or just a melody you sing in the shower, it has not yet taken on a tangible form. It is obscure and hazy until after Performing Arts and is used for songs. For lyrics only, you can request a TX Form (

80. Lui Collins Website: Children's Music
Collins also leads songwriting workshops with the children, working with small Collins has been performing, writing and recording since the 1970 s,
http://www.luicollins.com/childrens.html
School Programs and Concerts
Lui Collins presents a musical program rich in tradition, myth, imagery and imagination for children from pre-school through grade 4. Collins is animated and enthusiastic, maintaining a relaxed dialogue with the children, engaging them in the songs while giving an educational perspective. An active and dynamic participant in the performance is Lui's realistic bear puppet Ursa (Latin and Portuguese for "bear"), who engages the children with jokes and conversation, and greets them with giggles when they line up to meet her after the program.
A Lui Collins live performance includes songs written by Collins as well as Jane Yolen poems she has set to music, and old-timey banjo tunes. Collins accompanies her rich alto with guitar, banjo and piano. Collins' CD North of Mars, where many of these songs are recorded, received a Parents' Choice Honor in 1995, and was reviewed by National Public Radio's All Things Considered in 1995.
Collins' songs speak gently of hope and love and respect. She makes the political personal, becoming the mentor, quietly sharing her own values. Rather than overtly addressing environmental awareness, for instance, Collins teaches regard for the Earth simply by sharing her own awe of the Earth's beauty and abundance.
Included in the program are "Sedna," a song and story based on an Inuit myth, "Maisha ni Safi," a song with phrases in Swahili emphasizing the diversity and similarity of all peoples ("In either language a mama's a mama, Vijana or children, they're all dear to me"), and discussion and teaching of American Sign Language in the song "Peace on Earth." Other topics include nature and ecology, animal study, human relationship, acceptance of diversity among individuals, and, always a favorite, dinosaurs.
