From folk and bluegrass to acousticdriven rock, from hopeful lyrics to hard-edgedquestions, Grant s performing/songwriting Dumb Sheep Music Mission
http://dumbsheep.org/songwriting.html
Grant Van Leuven Biography From folk and bluegrass to acoustic-driven rock, from hopeful lyrics to hard-edged questions, and, from witty, humorous showmanship to times of serious contemplation, singer, songwriter, and seminarian Grant Van Leuven has performed at a variety of venues to the enjoyment of a slew of listeners for more than 10 years. Concert goers are led through myriad moods and perspectives by this troubadour's songs of enthusiasm and passion for life (coupled with reflections about its uncertainty) and comforted with a peaceful resolve in the certainty of Jesus Christ. Formerly an affiliate artist with Oregon-based Incubator Creative Group, Grant's musicianship stems from a combination of strict training in piano and voice, including lessons at the prestigious Eastman School of Music (Rochester, NY) and from Denver-based Dr. Scott Martin (Ph.D., Julliard), and years of playing with various bands and worship groups. This background makes for a unique blend of styles between polished technique and rough-edged spontaneity in his song writing and performance.

Courting The Act:
Random Thoughts on Performing
NOTE: This is a copy of an article first published in the July/August 1999 issue of SCALA NEWS , the bimonthly newsletter of the Songwriters, Composers, And Lyricists Association In the last issue of SCALA NEWS (May/June, 1999) I offered some thoughts on the songwriting process in an article called Courting The Muse: Random Thoughts on Songwriting . Here, I thought I would write about the act of performing those songs. I should stress that I don’t for a moment consider myself to be an expert on this topic. As someone who has only been singing on a regular (and amateur) basis for less than two years, I know I still have a lot to learn. I have of course, made many mistakes over the past couple of years, and I actively work on correcting those mistakes between performances every time I practice my songs. Hopefully, I can share some of the lessons learnt with you. So here, in descending level of importance, are my Ten Commandments of Public Performance.

http://www.winwoodfans.com/articles/perf-song-mag.htm
"The Freedom Rider", Performing Songwriter , Sept/Oct 1997 T hink of Steve Winwood and various images come to mind: a pale, skinny 16-year-old lad with the soul of an old bluesman, fronting the Spencer Davis Group and shouting "Gimme Some Lovin'!"; Traffic's hirsute leader, hunched over his Hammond B3 organ, coaxing out the swirling gritty chords on "The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys"; the elegantly dressed superstar sashaying and singing "Higher Love" on MTV. E S I t was Steve's brother who got him his first real gig, with a trad jazz band. "We needed a piano player, so I brought Steve along, " Muff Winwood recalls. "He was only 11, but he played everything perfectly. They stood with their mouths open. Because he was underage, we had to get him long trousers to make him look older, and even then we'd sneak him in through the pub kitchens. He'd play hidden behind the piano so nobody would know." B y the time Steve was 16, he was no longer concealed from the audience, but fronting The Spencer Davis Group on the now classic songs he wrote such as "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm a Man". With a record deal, TV appearances, hit singles on both sides of the ocean, and a tour supporting The Rolling Stones, the teen prodigy was getting his first taste of stardom. But it was the music, not the fame that mattered most to Winwood, and when he felt growing pains ("I got tired of just copying blues records"), he found solace in after-hours jam sessions with his friends Dave mason, Chris Woo, and Jim Capaldi.

Charmaine, who moved to the U.S. from Australia in 2001, co-wrote over half of the songs on her premiere album, including I Love You Lord Acceptable , and Only You . She brings both youthful energy and vertical lyrics to her contemporary style.  Currently Charmaine is touring with acclaimed artist Rebecca St. James, singing background vocals as well as opening shows with a performance of her own.  Her desire is to minister to her peers, and to create urgency in them to love and worship God passionately.  “Basically since the day I was born, I've been traveling around the world with my parents," says Charmaine.  "Singing and ministry are two things that have been a part of me and who I am, throughout my life.  My desire and my prayer is that whatever may happen in the future, whatever I say and whatever I do, that it will please Him and give glory to God.”
Jon Tyson, Charmaine's youth pastor at The People's Church in Franklin, Tennessee, says, "One thing that's desperately needed is for teenagers to have examples and leaders they can follow who will lead them in a worship movement.  That's why I'm excited about Charmaine... she has helped lead our students in this worship revolution and hungers to realign the hearts of today's generation with the heart of God.  I'm excited about her ministry as she becomes a voice for the glory of God in our time.”  For more information visit

Amy Grant
Home G If you want to know Amy Grant's story, all you really have to do is listen to her songs. From the first time she picked up a guitar as a teenager and sang for her school friends, to the albums she's recorded that have racked up multiplatinum awards, Amy's always found a musical way to share her life. And in the process, she's not only become an icon in Christian music (and could, in fact, be credited with launching the genre) but also one of the most celebrated artists in pop music today.
Music was always a part of Amy Grant's life. She can still recall the thrill of a cappella singing at her family's Church of Christ services and later, as a teenager, discovering a freer musical expression with the young people in her school and church. In fact, one of Grant's first performances was at a chapel service for her fellow students. The event was pivotal for Amy it unveiled not only a musical talent, but a true gift of connecting with her peers. From that day on, Amy Grant was marked as an artist, a role model, a kindred spirit and a seeker. Through the next 25 years none of those titles ever faded away.
Although Amy Grant is truly a daughter of Nashville, she was actually born in Augusta, Georgia in 1960 during her father's doctor's residency there. Amy was still a baby when the family returned to Nashville. The youngest of four daughters, Amy and her sisters (Mimi, Kathy and Carol) grew up in a home of privilege, strong family loyalty and fervent religious faith. In church she learned the hymns and stories that would inspire both her life and her music. During her years at Nashville's most prestigious private schools, those inspirations found a home and an outlet as Amy began dabbling with songwriting and performing.
