The incredibly diverse culture which animates Salsa and Latin Jazz was forged in the Americas, centered in the Caribbean where Cuba, the largest island, is the focal point. This dynamic, durable, and spiritually invincible culture was born of the forced syncretism of African, Indigenous, and European cultures. Its beauty and power belie the ugly and shameful history of slavery, which brings us to the point of all this discourse. Music and dance were vital and urgent forces, bridging the divine gap between heaven and earth, and affording African hope and survival in a new and hostile world. Music and dance were spiritual, mental, physical, and emotional outlets. They were communication, documentation, passion , joy, anger, satire, education, and love. They were life itself, and the most amazing part is

Stillness can be a source of pleasure
We can't all be physically active in campaigns, but some change minds with thoughts alone. Susannah Herbert reports on a man whose survival would be impossible in most countries When Jean-Dominique Bauby learnt that Paris's chattering [upper middle] classes regarded him as ''a vegetable'' after a stroke left him completely paralysed at the age of 43, he decided to prove them wrong using the only tool available - his left eye-lid. ''If I wanted to show that my intellectual capacity was still higher than that of a salsify root, I would have to rely on myself alone'', he said - or rather, dictated by letter in blinks deciphered by a publisher s assistant. The 130-page result of his painstaking work,'The Diving Bell and the Butterfly', is a huge literary success. Its account of a life transformed by Locked-In Syndrome - an incurable condition which leaves consciousness untouched but which closes down the nervous system - is easily pigeon-holed as a classic ''triumph over tragedy'' tale, of the type beloved by Hollywood.

"Collective Unconscious" or "Meta Unconscious" The intent of this essay is to attempt to explain the appearance of Eastern or Hindu words, such as Krishna and Shiva, in the speech reversals of African, Afro American, and Australian Aboriginal people. I will explore Carl Jung's theory of the collective unconscious as a possible explanation and then put forward another model based on an application of the concepts of oral tradition and oral diffusion. This alternative model I have termed the "Meta Unconscious."
Hindu words regularly appear in the Reverse Speech of African, Afro American and Australian Aboriginal people. Occasionally this appearance has a religious purpose, but in most cases they are used in a unique and non - religious manner. Oddly these words are identified with the people themselves, in that Krishna and Shiva are used as substitute words for Aboriginal or African or black. They operate then as synonyms for the names of the peoples already mentioned. For this reason I termed these reversals, "Identity Metaphors." Examples may be found heard and studied on David Oate's web site at:

CDC Globeleq invests in provision of reliable electricity for Tanzania and South Africa 17 December 2002 CDC Globeleq, the recently established emerging market power business of CDC Group plc, is investing US$116m to acquire two major electricity generation assets in Africa from the AES Corporation. In South Africa, CDC Globeleq is acquiring AES's 95 per cent economic interest in Kelvin, a 600 megawatt coal-fired power station serving the city of Johannesburg. The other 5 per cent economic interest is held by Global African Power, a black empowerment partner. CDC Globeleq will complete the US$25 million investment being made to refurbish the plant, significantly improving its environmental performance and enhancing the supply of low price electricity to the 270,000 customers of City Power Johannesburg. CDC Globeleq, 100% owned by CDC Group plc, was established earlier this year as a commercial power business for emerging markets. This transaction is the first stage of a strategy to acquire, develop and operate power companies in the developing world. CDC Globeleq expects to be announcing further acquisitions in the next few months.

    Introduction
Latin American music is extremely rich and varied, encompassing different traditions from Mexico, Central America, South America (Spanish-speaking countries and Portuguese-speaking Brazil, among others), and the Caribbean (Spanish-speaking Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic, as well as French influenced Haiti, and the British Caribbean, most notably Jamaica). Latin American music has benefited from very varied influences: Spanish and Portuguese, Native American (especially in the Amazon region, Mexico, Guatemala and the Andes), and African (primarily in the Caribbean islands and Caribbean coast of South America). Native American Music We know little about Native American music in the Americas before the conquests (pre-Columbian music). Archeological studies at Maya, Aztec and Inca sites have given us some information, as have descriptions made by missionaries. Different types of drums, flutes, and trumpet-like instruments were used. Stringed and other instruments were introduced in the 16th century by the Europeans. Mestizo Music The term mestizo refers to Latin Americans who combine indigenous and European traits. Mestizo music has received both of those influences. European instruments and derivations of them include the harp, the guitar, the violin, and the accordion. The African marimba is also common in popular bands in Mexico and Central America. Trumpets also became common in Mexican bands in this century (mariachi bands). Flutes are the main contribution of native culture, most notably in the Incan region (Peru), and varied percussion instruments the main instrumental African influence, primarily along the Caribbean coasts.
