The future and the prospect of any society are predominantly contingent upon the education, and nurturing of its youth. And the family has been the conventional and most conceivable medium to provide the ethereal and material means, which dispatches a culture from one generation to the next. But the future of tomorrow's Somalis seems be undergoing a rather dim wave. Lately, the "Somali culture" is decaying rapidly without any moderate speed. What are the causes of this phenomenon? Is it because the culture which supposedly was to promote about morals, ethics, striving to achieve one's goals and getting along with your fellow man, were replaced with exact opposite practices i.e killing your fellowman, perceiving others to be inferior purely they subscribe to another clan and so forth. Or there is another underlining factor?
I welcome any intellectual debate that deals with above inquisitions. I desperately seek help from people who have inner understanding of What Somali culture is per se. The beginning of thought is the starting point of free mental slavery.

Jim Davidson is the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Awdal Roads Company, which is pursuing business opportunities in the Awdal region of Somalia. Professor Jan Narveson asked him to reply to some of Terry Maratos-Flier’s comments that appeared on a mailing list for liberty-minded professors. Owing to his uncertainty about having Terry Maratos-Flier’s permission, Davidson removed Terry Maratos-Flier’s text entirely from his response. Davidson copied the Awdal@yahoogroups.com mailing list in the hope that his remarks might be useful to a wider audience. Roy Halliday saw these remarks on that mailing list, thought they would be of interest to Formulations readers, and got Davidson’s permission to reprint them here. GENERAL SITUATION
C-1. Following decades of political unrest and the fall of Somali dictator Siad Barre, a civil war broke out as 14 clans vied for power. The resulting nation composed of hostile social factions was held together by weak political alliances—none strong enough to unite and lead the country to national reconciliation. An ongoing drought led to famine and compounded the ethnic tensions and political instability. This volatile situation rapidly led to a phased US involvement (see Figure C-1 ). Army forces combined, sequenced, and proportionally emphasized the different types of operations to accomplish changing political objectives. Throughout all operations in Somalia, urban areas were critical to achieving mission success.

The Somali people have had, since their origin as pre-historic people of this land, a very hostile natural habitat with scarcities of water and abundance of sandy and infertile land and repeated droughts. They have faced several political turmoils external invasions, wars, feuds, coups and counter-coups, and they have gone thorough the most trying, grilling, agonising and disgusting period of nepotism, bribery, exploitation, tribalism, barbarous cruelty and misery during the post-Independence era due to corrupt civil governments and an atrocious military regime. All these circumstances and events have left their mark on the personality and character of the Somali people, who have been basically nomadic pastoral people for thousands of years. The identity of the Somali people has both its positive and negative points, its strengths and weaknesses.

It was a longish wait at the bus stop and there was no sign of any bus coming along. I was in the middle of a long queue waiting to board a bus; as luck would have it, I was in no hurry to get home. Suddenly three buses appeared in procession as if though they just came out from a monotonous meeting. I hopped on the second bus and saw a familiar face behind the wheel, Mr Ali, an old friend of mine. I was saddened to see him driving a double-decker bus because I remember his only ambition in life was to be an academic success. The last time I saw him was three years ago and he was in the penultimate year studying economics and politics. He was a highly gifted student and his friends felt rather like students in the presence of a professor when they were with him.

I can tell you that Somali bantus have their own distinct culture and values than ethnic Somalis, so why not google up "Somali bantu", I'm sure there are loads of information about their customs on the internet. Few little facts: Most Somali Bantus speak the af Maay dialect of Somali spoken in Southwest of Somalia. Most used to be farmers. They originally came from countries like Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique. Can you be specific what do you want to know regarding them?

Preface Overview Africa ... Appendices Somalia has been without a central government since its last president, dictator Mohamed Siad Barre, fled the country in 1991. Subsequent fighting among rival faction leaders resulted in the killing, dislocation, and starvation of thousands of Somalis and led the United Nations to intervene militarily in 1992.
Widespread interclan fighting subsided in 1995, apart from occasional skirmishes in Mogadishu, Baidoa, and the lower Juba, and an ongoing conflict in the northwest. There was no progress, however, in reconciling the rival faction leaders and creating a new national government. In Mogadishu, faction leader Mohamed Farah Aideed was elected by his supporters to head a putative national government, while in the northwest, the breakway "Republic of Somaliland" continued to proclaim its independence. Neither administration, however, was recognized internationally.
The persistent absence of a central government led most regions to establish rudimentary local administrations, most based on the authority of the predominant clan and faction in the area. Local authority remained contested, however, in the lower Juba, parts of the northwest, and Mogadishu.

The Somali Civic Web A Virtual "Shir" in Cyberspace http://www.somalishir.org/ Genealogy of the Somali People and its impact upon Somali History, Somali Governance, and Somali Culture The genealogy of the Somali People is an important foundation in understanding Somali History Somali Governance , and Somali Culture as well as the natural desire of Somalis to better understand their own personal ancestry. The Somali language was not a written language until about 1984. Therefore most of the Somali history and culture, including the genealogy of the Somali People has been passed down from generation to generation orally. An important goal of the Somali Civic Organization will certainly consist of documenting as much of this history, genealogy, and culture in written form as quickly as possible, before it is lost forever, and making this documentation available to the Somali People through the Somali Virtual Library. The Role of Genealogy in Understanding Somali History There are currently several quite different views concerning the history of the Somali People. Some claim that this history extends back several thousands of years. Others claim that the Somali Ethnic Group was founded about 800 years ago by a small number of Arabic settlers on the coast of Somalia who married primarily Oramo ("Galla") women. A comprehensive study of the Somali genealogy offers the opportunity to provide more definitive answers to many of these open questions. (The late Gen. Mohammed Farah Hassan ('Aidid') discusses some of these competing theories in

The rappers of hip hop band Skyhigh Family ,  have fashioned lives distinctly different from their parents. The three rappers and their manager all came over with their families, traversing the ocean in an effort to escape war-torn Somalia. But rather than dismissing the stories of their ancestors, Skyhigh Family has taken the very contemporary culture of hip hop and fused it with the Somali tales of old, producing music unlike that of many of today’s rappers. THE SITUATION IN SOMALIA
This chapter is about the political and socio-economic context in which the Canadian Airborne Regiment Battle Group (CARBG) carried out its mission to Somalia. It describes the region's geography, culture, political, and social structure, and surveys significant events leading to the civil war and the end of Siad Barre's regime. It also examines the situation in Somalia when the United Nations intervened and the social and political conditions in Belet Huen when the CARBG was deployed. An understanding of the Somalia context is necessary for evaluating the suitability and operational readiness of the Canadian Airborne Regiment (CAR) and CARBG for service in Africa, as well as for judging the appropriateness of their training for the mission and the adequacy of Canadian military intelligence. Information about Somali society helps in the evaluation of decisions and actions taken in theatre and clarifies how cultural differences between CARBG members and the Somalis may have affected the conduct of operations.
A PROFILE OF SOMALIA
Somalia occupies a strategic position in the Horn of Africa. In addition to ties with other African countries, it has close religious and historical links with the Arab and Islamic world and has a seat in both the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the Arab League. At the time of the CARBG's arrival, Somalia had a population of approximately six million, including refugees.
