I receive lot of e-mail from many Somalis in the United States and Canada looking for their friends, relatives in Australia. I managed to locate some of them and this pleases me a lot. However, to make the task of locating your Somali family members or friends in Australia easier please provide the following information: Nick Names, the name of the home town, the name of the school or college they attended or any other information that you think will be helpful. One of these days I will setup a database (which contains the Somalis in Australia that I know of) that you can search. Obviously this will require some coding and lengthy discussion with the Internet Service Provider, but I'm confident this facility will be available soon (well let us say before the end of the year).

Introduction
Somalia is situated on the horn of East Africa and is bordered by the Gulf of Aden and Djibouti to the north, the Indian Ocean to the east and south, to the north and northwest by Ethiopia and Kenya to the southwest.
The northern region is mountainous with plateaus ranging 3,000 and 7,000 ft. To the northeast there is an extremely dry dissected plateau that reaches a maximum height of 8,250 ft. South and west of this region, extending to the Shebeli River, lies a plateau whose maximum elevation is 2,250 ft. The region between the Juba and Shebeli rivers is low agricultural land, and the area that extends southwest of the Juba River to the Kenyan border is low pasture land.
The Juba and Shebeli rivers originate in Ethiopia and flow toward the Indian Ocean. They provide water for irrigation but are not navigable by commercial vessels. The Shebeli dries up before reaching the ocean. Despite its lengthy shore line, Somalia has no natural harbours because of inshore coral reefs.

These blessings have been bestowed to the bride and bridegroom since time and memorium. Marriage in Somali culture has always been a cornerstone of society. It has signified not only a union of two young people but also of two families and most of the time, two clans. Over the last ten years, due to the instability and crises at home, many Somalis fled and settled in foreign lands. As a result, marriage itself has also been affected as changing roles and expectations enter the picture. FOOD The main meal of the day is eaten at midday; morning and evening meals are lighter. People usually begin the day with a flat bread called Anjeeero, liver, toast, cereal or porridge made of millet or cornmeal. The midday meal consists of rice or noodles with sauce and perhaps meat. Beef is less popular than goat or camel meat. In Somalia, certain cuts of meat are considered suitable for men, while others are reserved for women and children. The evening meal is very light and might include beans, muffo (patties made of oats or corn), or a salad with more Anjeero. Special tea is the favourite drink, but sheep, goat and camel's milk are also popular. Cow's milk is used only when the others are not available.

In 1969 a coup led by Maj. Gen. Muhammad Siyad Barre resulted in a socialist state. In 1977 the corrupt and repressive regime broke with the USSR over Soviet aid to Ethiopia and received aid during the 1980s from the U.S. The Somali army invaded the Ogaden region in 1977 but was defeated (1978) by Ethiopian forces; skirmishes continued into the early 1980s. Barre was ousted (1991) by rebels after intense and bloody fighting. The Somali National Movement gained control of the north, the old British Somaliland, and proclaimed it the Somaliland Republic. The north remained relatively peaceful, although clan-based fighting has occurred. In Mogadishu and most of the south the United Somali Congress achieved control, but savage warfare erupted between rival subclans. Almost a quarter of the population faced starvation because of the fighting. UN food supplies and peacekeepers arrived in 1992 and were soon joined by troops from the U.S. and other nations to assure distribution of food aid. A national cease-fire was signed, but no central government was formed. Fighting again erupted (1993) in Mogadishu as the UN unsuccessfully attempted to arrest Gen. Mohammed Farah Aidid. The U.S. and other nations withdrew their troops in 1994 and the last UN forces were withdrawn in 1995. That year some factions again proclaimed Aidid president, but the country remained divided into spheres of influence with no central government. Aidid died from battle wounds in 1996, and his faction chose his son, former U.S. Marine Hussein Mohammed Farah, to succeed him.

Somali History
The origins of the (A member of a tall dark people inhabiting Somalia) Somali s and their time of entry into present-day Somalia has been debated, with Somalis claiming descent from (A spirited graceful and intelligent riding horse native to Arabia) Arabian families who settled on the coast 1,000 years ago, and historians tracing the origins to pre-15th century. By the 12th century, the ancestors of some of the clan familes were already established in their present territories, while others moved southward through the 19th century. The borders of Somalia were set at the end of the 19th century and a great number of Somalis were left out by the border placement, leaving them in eastern (Ethiopia is a republic in northeastern Africa on the Red Sea; formerly called Abyssinia) Ethiopia and northern (A republic in eastern Africa; achieved independence from the United Kingdom in 1963; major archeological discoveries have been made in the Great Rift Valley in Kenya) Kenya . It is estimated that northern Somalis began converting to (The monotheistic religion of Muslims founded in Arabia in the 7th century and based on the teachings of Muhammad as laid down in the Koran) Islam around the 10th century.

Losing Mogadishu: Testing U.S. Policy in Somalia
Stevenson, Jonathan. Annapolis, Md.: Naval Institute Press, 1995. 183pp. $24.95 The book jacket of Losing Mogadishu quotes the former U.S. ambassador to Kenya, Smith Hempstone, famous for his prediction of Somalia as America's next "tar baby," as saying that this book is "required reading of anyone interested in the origins of the Somalia debacle." I would go one step further: it should be required reading for anyone involved in a U.S. humanitarian effort overseas. Not only does this comprehensive, thoroughly researched book provide an honest appraisal of what went wrong in Somalia, it also spells out how the lessons learned from the experience should guide our foreign policy, the use of U.S. military force in humanitarian interventions, and our relationship with the United Nations. We would do well to heed its warning. Although author Jonathan Stevenson cites numerous reasons for the United States' poor performance in Somalia, two stand out in particular: the failure to understand Somali culture and a fear of repeating Vietnam. To this reviewer, who was in Somalia at the time of Operation RESTORE HOPE, these factors are more important than others because their impact is so far-reaching. In addition, they are deceivingly benign, so it is important that others less familiar with Somalia understand them. In his early chapters, Stevenson, a lawyer turned journalist, introduces us to Somali culturea multifaceted society with one pervasive feature, the clan. One's clan affiliation determines everything in Somali life. This alone defies any notion of a centralized politic, a fact not appreciated by everyone determining American policy in the country. Stevenson further characterizes Somali culture as a series of "shifting loyalties and fluid allegiances." Loyalty extends only to the sub-clan, whose "collective alignment [rolls] with the moment."

somalia Cultural Profiles. Elements of this spirituality still thrive in Somali culture. Clan members offer ceremonies, gifts and prayers to ancestors
http://cp.settlement.org/english/somalia/spirit.html
S PRITUALITY I slam and poetry have been described as the twin pillars of Somali culture. Over 99% of Somalis are Muslim, mostly Sunni Muslim; a small minority is Christian, both Anglican and Roman Catholic. Despite the influence of religion on daily life and culture, many Somalis are not strict adherents of their faith, but follow only some of the more important rites. M uslims recognize one God, Allah, and Muhammad as his prophet. Muhammad is believed to be the last in a line of prophets that included Abraham, Moses and Jesus. In 610 AD, Muhammed introduced Islam to the city of Mecca. His revelations are contained in the Islamic holy book, the Qur’an or Koran. Muhammed’s other teachings were recorded by his followers and are known as the hadith (tradition). Muslims follow the five pillars of the Islamic faith: professing the faith; saying daily prayers; fasting during the month of Ramadan; giving alms to the poor and religious scholars; and, if possible, going on one hajj (pilgrimage) to Mecca. P rior to adopting Islam, Somalis followed a belief system that included folklore and reverence for ancestors. Elements of this spirituality still thrive in Somali culture. Clan members offer ceremonies, gifts and prayers to ancestors in the hope that they will protect the living. In addition, clan leaders are often revered as people who have

She is also a key civil society leader and facilitator in the Somali peace talks that began in 2002 and resulted in the January 29, 2004 peace agreement that is now the basis of an interim government and framework for a new constitution. Zahra has focused on addressing Somalia's cycle of vicious conflict by working as a peacemaker and a peace-builder to overcome the legacy of warring clan factions who destroyed the country's political, economic, and social infrastructure, leaving ever greater poverty, starvation, and disease behind in a "failed state." Zahra created FERO in the early 1990s to assist in meeting food, medical, and basic survival needs of civil-war devastated communities in Somalia. The women of FERO assumed tasks of feeding the hungry, finding medical care for those in need, and helping rebuild shelters. In 1993, because of their initial success, FERO was asked to serve as
