Its military name, Operation Deliverance, has almost lofty connotations. When the 900 Canadian soldiers land in Somalia on Dec. 15, 1992, they will try to draw order from the chaos. As shown in this CBC report, famine and civil war are ravaging this small African country. Next Printer-friendly page Send this page to a friend Add this clip to your personal bookmarks ... The Somalia Affair At one time, Somalia was highly coveted for its geographical location, situated near oil wells in the Persian Gulf and along the ship routes from the Indian Ocean to the Red Sea. The country was released from its history of British and Italian imperial rule in 1960, but when Maj. Gen. Mohammed Siad Barré seized power in 1969, Somalia entered a new era of undemocratic rule. At the dawn of the Cold War, Somalia aligned itself with the Soviet Union.

Canadian peacemakers were lauded as heroes when they went into an untamed land ruled by rebels. Their mission, Operation Deliverance, charged them with restoring order in Somalia. But in fact, the Canadian Airborne regiment was splitting apart at the seams, lacking both leadership and accountability. Murder after murder, the troops came home disgraced. Tracks were covered and responsibility shifted up and down the chain of command during an investigation that would dismantle the army and implicate the government in a high-level cover-up.

Country Info Somalia Introduction Somalia General Data Somalia Maps Somalia Culture ... Somalia Time and Date Somalia Culture Back to Top The Somalis are a culturally, linguistically, and religiously homogeneous people, who are separated along clan lines and sparsely scattered over a harsh, dry land. There are remarkable distinctions among sectors of the population, related in part to variations in means of livelihood. In the early 1990s, roughly 60 % of an around population of more than 8.4 million were still nomadic pastoralists or seminomadic herders, subject to the vicissitudes of an arid climate. Twenty to 25 % of the people were cultivators, most living in the southern half of the nation, on or between Somalia's two major rivers, the Jubba and the Shabeelle. The remainder were town dwellers, the large majority of whom resided in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu. The workings of the lineage system were predicated on the solidarity of the portions of the same order with one another and the relative equality of the members of each portion. The growth of the state and the development of different degrees of wealth and access to other private-sector resources caused an incipient stratification that had the potential to override lineage solidarity as it diminished equality.

Somali History
The origins of the Somalis and their time of entry into present-day Somalia has been debated, with Somalis claiming descent from Arabian families who settled on the coast 1,000 years ago, and historians tracing the origins to pre-15th century. By the 12th century, the ancestors of some of the clan familes were already established in their present territories, while others moved southward through the 19th century. The borders of Somalia were set at the end of the 19th century and a great number of Somalis were left out by the border placement, leaving them in eastern Ethiopia and northern Kenya . It is estimated that northern Somalis began converting to Islam around the 10th century. edit
Clan System and Marriage
There are approximately 6.5 million people in Somalia and the Somalis constitute 95% of the population of people living on the Horn of Africa . The Somali society is organized into clan families, which range from 100,000 to over one million in size. The six large clans are: Darod, Issaq, Hawiye, Dir, Digil, and Rahanwayan. There are also a number of smaller clan groups. Each of the large clan families is divided into lineage units, typically ranging from 10,000 to 100,000 members. It is possible for Somalis to know how they are related simply by giving their name and clan membership.

Major Proposal Senior Project Courses Internships ... Home Somalia Culture So/An 128 Somalia's population is mostly rural. Nearly 80% of the people are pastoralists, agriculturalists, or agropastoralists. Except for a small number of Somalis who rely on fishing, the rest of the population are urban dwellers. Somalia's chief cities and towns are Mogadishu (the capital), Hargeisa, Burao, Berbera, Bossaso, Marka, Brava, Baidoa, and Kismaayo. In the past few years, civil war and famine have changed urban demographics as hundreds of thousands of displaced Somalis have poured into the cities seeking sanctuary and relief. Ethnically and culturally, Somalia is one of the most homogeneous countries in Africa. Somalia has its minorities: there are people of Bantu descent living in farming villages in the south, and Arab enclaves in the coastal cities. A small number of Europeans, mostly Italians, live on farms in the south. But the great majority of the people are ethnic Somalis who speak dialects of the same language, Somali, and who practice the same religion, Islam. In a land of sparse rainfall, more than half the population consists of pastoralists or agropastoralists who raise camels, cattle, sheep, and goats. There are farmers, mostly in the south and northwest, and in recent years a new urban group of government workers, shopkeepers, and traders has emerged, but it is the nomadic way of life, with its love of freedom and open spaces, that is celebrated in Somali poetry and folklore. Somalis believe strongly in independence, democracy, egalitarianism, and individualism. Somalis value generosity. They do not generally express their appreciation verbally. Somalis respect strength and often challenge others to test their limits. Somali justice is based on the notion of "an eye for an eye." Saving face is important, so indirectness and humor are often used in conversation. Somalis are known for their ability to adjust to new situations.

CULTURE Greetings Somali warmly greet each other with handshakes, but shaking hands with the opposite sex is avoided. Common verbal greetings include:
  • Assalam Alaikum (Peace be upon you) Nabad miyaa (is their peace). Subah wanaagsan (Good morning) Galab wanaagsan (Good afternoon) Habeeb wanaagsan (Good night)
Gestures Somali use sweeping hand and arm gestures to dramatize speech. Many ideas are expressed through specific hand gestures:
  • A swift twist of the open hand means "nothing" or "no". Snapping fingers may mean "long ago" or and "so on" A thumb under the chin indicates "fullness". It is impolite to point the sole of one's foot or shoe at another person. It is impolite to use the index finger to call somebody; that gesture is used for calling dogs. The American "thumbs up" is considered obscene.

adsonar_pid=3019;adsonar_ps=370666;adsonar_zw=540;adsonar_zh=220;adsonar_jv='ads.adsonar.com'; Somalia developed from a string of Arab sultanates along the northeast coast of Africa, which in turn had grown up from trading posts established from the 17th century onwards. As Arab influence waned, the British, French and Italians established protectorates on the Somali coast during the late-19th century. These were the subjects of various treaties, forged amid frequent border clashes between the colonial powers and the neighboring Ethiopians, and between the European powers themselves. The alliance that overthrew Siad Barre was inherently unstable. It was mainly formed from three mutually antagonistic ethnic groups, within which numerous complex clan and tribal loyalties co-existed, and was quite unable to reach the sort of essential compromises upon which any national regime must depend. The Somali National Movement (SNM) was dominated by the Issaq people from the north. The Somali Patriotic Movement (SPM), drawn mainly from the Ogadeni clan, held the south. The third major group, the United Somali Congress (USC), was composed mostly of people from the Hawiye clan and controlled the capital, Mogadishu. Since the middle of 1991, the country has effectively been divided into autonomous regions, each under the control of the prevailing clan or guerrilla organization.
